Had Ares been surprised that Marina had accepted his invitation? No. It was surprised he'd been rejected on three occasions prior though, the other girls thinking it was more important to trust others opinions rather than making their own. Marina however, seemed inclined to give Ares the benefit of the doubt, and so far what he knew about her was intriguing. The Gryffindor lurked around in the Halloween Feast, chuckling to himself as a few of the weird costumes came walking in, and wondering why people put in so much effort into an outfit that they'd only wear once. His own costume was something his mum had bought him before he came to school, and it was easy enough to slip on when the evening festivities had begun.

Marina could not have said why she’d accepted the offer to got to a party with Ares Zephyr - she barely knew anything about him other than what she’d heard some of the other girls in their year talking about. Considering they were only two months into the year as well, she did actually think it was quite impressive that he already seemed to have made a name for himself. But it fairness, it wasn’t like Marina had a lot of people she could talk to about it - she didn’t exactly have any friends. She wasn’t trying to have any friends in reality, but that didn’t mean she didn’t sometimes feel like she was all alone. She wasn’t sure people would like her very much if they got to know her, so she had no issues sort of ignoring them for things she felt like she wanted. What was the problem with that?

She spotted Ares as soon as she headed in. They were kind of matching, sort of, she supposed, in the way people who wore superhero costumes did. She spent a moment watching him, the way he was watching other people. She smiled lightly to herself because it said a lot of things about him, she thought. He seemed to be similar to her in terms of just doing what he wanted to in the moment, rather than focusing on what it was going to mean afterwards. Consequences and all that. “Ares,” she called to him, heading over. “Did you forget your mask, Spiderman?”

Ares had just laid his eyes on a costume that was incredibly involved. He wasn't quite sure how the girl had managed to bring that to school, or how much it would have cost her mum to buy for her. As the girl suddenly came walking toward him, addressing him even by name, he realised it was Marina. Had he forgotten his mask? Here right now, maybe. He was certain it was shoved into his trunk somewhere though. "If I was wearing my mask, you would never have found me," he answered, thinking it was actually a genius idea to not wear it. He glanced up and down once more at the Ravenclaw's outfit, trying to work out who she was but not wanting to appear rude. "So did you make that in the last few weeks or did you bring a second suitcase to wheel it in?"

Marina was kind of amused with Ares if she was honest. Not necessarily because he’d said or done anything specifically funny, but she was kind of enjoying his whole vibe more than anything. “Oh, so that’s the strategy. Ditch the mask so you can be found - very noble of you.” At least he’d thought of letting her find him, she could have been looking all over the place for him otherwise. She was a little surprised she was even here at all, she didn’t think she would have come if not for Ares. He was far more confident than she was, though she wouldn’t have considered herself unconfident at all, just less so than someone like Ares. Maybe it worked better that way, if they were both confident she wasn’t sure what that would do. She laughed slightly when he asked about her outfit. “Neither, most of it is thrown together, but I asked one of the professor’s to change the colour of the cape so it was gold on one side and white on the other.” She’d been a little surprised that they were so willing to help her out. She hadn’t really thought that would be the case.

If Marina thought he was noble, well he wasn't going to rush to change her mind. He was starting to appreciate being around other first years because it was so easy to watch their minds at work. He was a little curious to know which professor she'd befriended to the point where they were now doing favours for her. Were there professors out there that were happy to do tasks for the students if tasked? His mind began to wander, debating whether or not it would be good to get a few on his good side. "Who did that?" he asked. So far he didn't really have an opinion on any of the professors, well except for his Head of House, but Ares didn't feel like spreading the information he had about that man around just yet.

Marina was trying to decide if she should answer him or not, she was rather enjoying the mystery of the whole thing if she was honest about it. There was something amusing about him being curious and her having the answer she didn’t have to tell him. There was also no harm in telling him. “I don’t know if I should tell you,” she mused, pursing her lips slightly in thought. “What if you go telling everyone and it ruins it for the rest of us?” She didn’t know him, after all so she didn’t really know his personality. Still, a little trust and all that. “It was Professor Cooper - I ran into her the other day and she offered. She saw what I was carrying.” She’d been taking the cape out to have a look and Professor Cooper had been heading up the stairs at the time. “She’s on the sixth floor, one of the electives I think,” she hadn’t managed to check yet. “You planning on buttering up the staff now, or are you more of the ‘see how far I can push them before they snap’ type?”

Ares blinked at the girl in front of him, unsure what was going through her mind. "Why would knowing which Professor is helpful, ruin anything for anyone?" he asked, turning toward the event before waiting for an answer. He didn't really know Marina well enough yet to know how best to talk to her, but so far he was just a little confused. He made a mental note that Professor Cooper however, was the one who seemed to give out favours. Ares had years until he needed to worry about electives, but even so he already knew what he wanted to do when he left school, so it would be easy. No need to stress over what subjects to take when your life was already laid out in front of you. "Buttering them up?" Ares repeated, wandering over in the direction of the nearest game; some sort of apple bobbing competition by the looks of it. "They're not a piece of toast," he glanced at the Ravenclaw, "but to answer your question, neither. If I want something, they'll give it to me." It was just a matter-of-fact. "Are you gonna bob for apples or are you afraid of ruining your costume?" he asked, nodding his head to a large bucket. It was one benefit of his costume he guessed; no loose parts.

Marina stayed as close to Ares as she dared, not really enjoying the fact there was a large group of people. Large groups made her nervous because she felt like she was always surveying them, trying to figure out which ones were going to ask her questions she didn’t have the answers to. She gave a soft laugh when he asked her about ruining things. “It’s not so much about the ruining part,” she said, though her voice was a little quieter, “It’s just… once people know where to go for favours, everyone goes. And then the favour’s not a favour anymore - it’s just noise.” She shrugged her shoulders, not really sure how else to explain it, even though this seemed like the simplest way. “Not everyone likes noise.” She liked his confidence, it made her feel like she didn’t need to have any. She had enough and that was all that mattered. “Nice to see you’re so confident in yourself,” she supposed that made sense given how he’d asked her to come. She didn’t necessarily believe things came that easily though, not without some kind of a cost. “And we can bob for apples, my costume isn’t easy to ruin.”

Ares wasn't sure whether or not he'd consider himself to be a confident person. He supposed he wasn't not confident, but he hardly ever had any reason to doubt himself. He could only imagine those that had no confidence were the type of people that decided other people's opinions of them were of such importance, that it was actually to affect the things they did and the way they behaved. It sounded exhausting. "Good," he nodded at the Ravenclaw, before approaching one of the large barrels that was filled with water. "Would have been better if you could trade these in for toffee apples once you've caught them," Ares told Marina loudly, hoping that someone might hear him and take it on board for next year. Honestly if he couldn't trade the real apples in for candy, what was the point of playing for them? He was going to have to make this more interesting. "Whoever catches the most," he began thoughtfully, "gets to dare the other people to do something really embarrassing." He didnt wait for her to accept, before leaning over the barrel and beginning to try to nab a stalk with his teeth.

Freddie didn't go looking for trouble. Sometimes it just wandered right in front of him. He stood not far from the apple-bobbing barrel, watching Ares Zephyr lean over the water. Ugh - he was with Marina. Poor Marina. Did she like him? Nah - no-one liked Ares. Right? Didn't she know Ares was a jerk? Didn't she know he was picking on Freddie, following him around, trying to make him mad? Didn't she know Ares was making his life miserable?

He didn't deserve to have friends.

Sheathing his fake sword, Freddie advanced on the Gryffindor from behind. It was too easy to make it look like an accident. He tripped right into him - making sure, as he fell, to jam his knee into that soft bit that would make Ares' leg buckle.

Marina was formulating something to say, mostly along the lines of how she didn’t need to dare to embarrass herself - she mostly did that without needing the added challenge - before Ares was already bent over a barrel and issuing the challenge to her anyway. She was trying to figure out how much she cared about winning when the strangest of things happened. Out of the corner of her eye she noticed a skeletal guard, or maybe it was a knight, she couldn’t tell from this angle, who came heading towards them. She didn’t say anything to Ares because it didn’t occur to her that whoever it was was about to fall into Ares. “Ooh!” She jumped back slightly and then quickly reached out to try and steady the visitor when it looked like he was going to stumble or something, not noticing anything out of the ordinary about the fall. She hadn’t been paying attention so whatever was going on between them was completely lost on her. She was going to try and steady the both of them, if she could get a good hold on either of them. “Watch it!”

Ares was already close to catching his first apple. Honestly Marina better hurry up and get stuck in if she didnt want to be left in the dust. He was chasing a stalk around with his tongue when he felt his leg buckle.

The height of the barrel only came up to the Gryffindors waist. Presumably so that even the smallest of students could take part. It did mean however that as Ares lost the support in his legs, he was now top heavy. Before anyone had the chance to kept him upright, Ares' head was suddenly submerged in the cold water and for a brief moment he thought his life was flashing before his eyes.

In reality the only thing flashing by his eyes were the apples he'd now knocked out the way with his face. As he steadied himself, pulling his dripping hair and face out of the water, he turned and blinked wearily in the direction of the person should behind him, trying to ignore the cold water that was now dripping down his costume. He was unsurprised to se Freddie had joined them, but the Ravenclaw was going to regret causing him physical harm for the third time.

Even though he'd only been under for a moment, he knew if he wanted to get Freddie into trouble he was going to have to do something. Therefore it was only fair that Ares began coughing and spluttering incredibly loudly, doing his very best to make it seem as though he couldn't quite catch his breath back.

Pain bolted down Freddie’s leg as he hit the floor. He scrambled to his feet, grabbing the side of the barrel to pull himself upright. Was he OK? It didn’t hurt any more, but something felt weird, something felt wrong. Crap - he couldn’t put all his weight on it. When he did, it wobbled under him. This was his fault. If he wasn’t such a jerk…

Freddie clutched his knee, pretending he’d bashed it. Beside him, Marina was helping Ares, who was being a massive, attention-seeking baby, coughing and spluttering like he’d almost drowned. Could he just shut up and be normal for two seconds? Freddie should probably act like he was helping him as well, but he was so mad, mad that he’d hurt himself, mad that Marina was helping Ares, that he couldn’t make himself pretend.

Godmod approved
