[OUTWARD DEMEANOUR]
Freddie presents himself quite carefully to the world, giving very little of his inner emotions away. He rarely smiles, tends to be inexpressive, generally sits quite still, and gives off an unbothered, relaxed, or sullen air.

WORK & EDUCATION

[EARLY YEARS]
Freddie attended a muggle primary school in upstate New York. His teachers considered him academically gifted, but said he lacked self-discipline and manners. His favourite subject was maths, and his least favourite subject was PE. He found it easy at first to fall into the fringes of established groups, but struggled to develop close friendships. The other children thought he was a try-hard and laughed at him behind his back.
This teasing turned into full-blown bullying after he developed nerve damage in his back/leg. Freddie frequently got into trouble for lashing out at his classmates and teachers. His peers mocked his limp, tripped him over on purpose, and excluded him from their games, while his teachers were generally unsympathetic to his pain. Freddie had a reputation for being difficult, and the general consensus was that he was hamming it up for attention. Even after his diagnosis, his teachers often ignored his complaints and refused to accommodate him.

EMPATHETICINDEPENDENT
Freddie feels deeply, both for himself and for others. He recognises pain and sadness in the subtle changes of someone's posture and expression, and often feels compelled to try to remedy it. An inclination to be alone and a desire for freedom drive many of Freddie's decisions. He's never been afraid of being alone or getting lost, and tends to be uninfluenced by others' opinions and experiences when making decisions.
AMBITIOUSINTELLIGENT
Ambitious, focused, driven - Freddie will stop at nothing to reach a goal he's set his mind to, and he's always setting himself goals. Most of them revolve around his favourite hobby: playing the guitar. He often practises upwards of six hours a day.Freddie's early teachers often described him as gifted. Certainly he has a strong memory and an extraordinary talent for math. However, his intelligence also offers him rational thinking.
QUIET
Reticent and moody, Freddie tends to speak only when spoken to. He avoids socialising if he can help it, fearing it will lead to rejection, dismissal, or humiliation.

[INTERESTS & HOBBIES]
Playing the electric guitar, reading, wandlore, fashion, record-collecting, walking

[SKILLS]

2053 - 2064 (BEFORE HOGWARTS)
Freddie had a difficult and unstable childhood. It began promisingly: a bright and curious child, he hit most of his developmental milestones early, and by the age of 18 months he was already speaking in short sentences. He was gentle with his infant brother Luke and loved to play with his elder sister Susie, who made up stories to entertain him. The family was generally happy. Though his career-driven mother was emotionally distant and seldom home before his bedtime, his stay-at-home father was warm and loving. Everything seemed, if not perfect, then at least stable, but even in these early years Freddie sensed an unhappy tension. At night, he often heard his parents arguing downstairs. The arguments upset him. He trained himself to fall asleep in spite of the noise, but he would often wake a few hours later from unsettling dreams. It became his habit to climb into bed with Susie, who would hold him until he fell asleep, his faithful protector from bad dreams and monsters under the bed.

Everything changed when Freddie was five. One winter morning, a morning like any other, his mother left for work and never came home again. His dad told the children she had gone on holiday, and they believed him, but something felt wrong. He stopped taking them to school. He stopped buying groceries. The house grew quieter by the day, as if it were somehow severed from the rest of the world. Freddie was too young to articulate it, but he felt sick and uneasy, like he was stuck in one of his dreams. It was only going to get worse.

Two weeks after his mother disappeared, there was a knock at the door. His uncle Nathaniel, a man he had only met once before in his life, announced that had come to take the family to America. Freddie was terrified. Why did they have to go? Where was his mum? What was going on? He tried to barricade himself in his room, tried to kick and scream and cry his way out of it, but the decision had been made and he was powerless to stop it. Susie comforted him as they approached the portkey. It would be all right, she told him, because no matter where they went in the world, they would always have each other - Susie, Freddie, and Luke, the three musketeers, the magic trio.

Their new home was on a farm in upstate New York. Under different circumstances, Freddie would have loved it: an enormous barn conversion, acres and acres of fields and woodland to explore, a creek running through the centre of it - it was a child's paradise. Yet the circumstances that had brought them here were so miserable, he could only see the place as scary and too big. On the first and second nights, he stayed in his bedroom and cried. On the third night, he waited until one o'clock, packed a small bag full of clothes and food, let himself out the back door, and started walking in the general direction of the portkey. He didn't know exactly where it was, or how long it would take him to get there, but that was all right. He was five years old and determined to get home.

His aunt picked him up at dawn. He had made it half a mile beyond the outskirts of the farm before he had to sit down for a rest on a tree stump, and that was where she found him, freezing cold and damp from the rain. He did not protest as she took his hand and apparated him home.

They locked the doors more securely after that.

Christmas came, bringing with it a glimmer of hope. Susie was learning to play the oboe, and Freddie desperately wanted an instrument of his own - an electric guitar, so that he could recreate his favourite rock riffs. When he was finally persuaded out of his room, he came downstairs to find a shiny black Stratocaster waiting for him under the tree. His aunt had even charmed it for him, making it smaller and lighter, so that his small hands could hold it more comfortably. It was the best present he had ever received. He played it to death in those first few months. His fingers were raw and bled on the strings, but he was too happy to care. Music gave him an escape. Hours upon hours of daily practice soon paid off; by his sixth birthday, he had already mastered the basics and was beginning to pick up techniques a ten-year-old would struggle with.

Observing that his mood had improved so drastically, his uncle and aunt decided to enrol him and his siblings into a nearby muggle elementary school. Freddie was distraught. His aunt tried to explain that all of their cousins had attended the same school, but he didn't believe her; he was convinced she had got fed up with him, and that sending all three children to school was a convenient excuse to get rid of Freddie in particular. After all, he was the one she complained about. Too loud, too angry, too rude, too unsociable - his siblings were angels, but Freddie? He couldn't keep himself out of trouble if he tried.

The new school routine was predictably stressful. Every morning was a battle to get Freddie up and out of the door. When he finally made it to school, he was as sullen and uncooperative there as he was at home. His teachers despaired for him. He was clearly intelligent, demonstrating, when he felt like it, an exceptional talent for mathematics, but he was uninterested in learning. Within six weeks, he had already been disciplined for cursing at his teacher, shoving a boy to the ground, and destroying an art exhibition. Nobody knew quite what to do. No matter how his teachers tried to support him, he was unable - or unwilling - to regulate his emotions.

In late October, amid mounting tensions at school and at home, disaster struck. Freddie was playing alone in the shade of the family barn when he spotted a ladder propped up against the wall. Susie had warned him not to climb it - but Susie wasn't here now, and besides, he'd been in a mood with her ever since she'd insulted his new haircut. So he climbed. He made it to the roof, where his uncle had mounted some Halloween decorations, and then clambered higher still, up toward the ridge, determined to make it to the little cupola. But the incline was steep, the slates slippery, and in a moment of panic, Freddie lost his footing and fell.

He landed on his back. He had fallen fifteen feet, the impact softened only by a heap of old tarp and hay. It knocked the air out of his lungs, dazed him for a moment, but miraculously, he seemed unhurt. He picked himself up, a little shaky but otherwise okay. Or so he thought.

A week later, he was playing tag in the schoolyard when he felt an odd sensation in his leg. Pins and needles. He shrugged it off; but the sensation persisted all afternoon, accompanied by odd shooting pains down the back of his thigh. Concerned, his aunt brought him to a healer, who examined him thoroughly but found no obvious cause. Freddie denied any recent injury. For one thing, he hadn't been injured, and for another, his aunt would be furious if she discovered he'd climbed on the roof. The healer chalked it up to growing pains and sent him home with a prescription for gentle exercise.

Exercise did nothing. If anything, it seemed to make the pain worse. Everything made the pain worse - sitting still, moving around, putting his shoes on, having a bath; a bolt of pain followed him everywhere, like lightning down his leg. Alarmingly, the pain would sometimes turn into weakness. At school, Freddie's temper flared as his classmates began to pick on him, excluding him from their games, mocking his unusual gait, deliberately tripping him over. Freddie fought back, but it only got him deeper into trouble. None of his teachers seemed to believe his leg was really hurting. It was too convenient, they said. It was too unlikely.

His aunt, devastatingly, was of the same opinion. She had accepted the healer's diagnosis as fact and refused to hear Freddie's complaints, dismissing them as a new tactic to avoid school. Only Susie believed him - but at eight years old, there was nothing she could do.

Christmas came and went. By January, the pain had evolved to unbearable levels. Freddie had to lie on the classroom floor to stop himself crying out as phantom knives plunged through his leg. Other days, it felt like his bones were on fire, burning his flesh from the inside out. Still nobody listened. Frustration and desperation fuelled that violent part of him which threw chairs and swung at teachers. He didn't know how else to make them see him. He didn't know what else to do.

One night, when his leg hurt too much to sleep, he stumbled across the room to wake Susie. She pulled him into her arms, and he cried - worn out, hurting, and scared. Susie cried with him. The monsters weren't under the bed any more. They were everywhere, and she had failed to protect him.

She'd had enough. Dragging Freddie by the hand, she marched into their aunt and uncle's bedroom and unleashed a storm. They wouldn't ignore him any more. He was afraid to make a fuss, but she wasn't. She did it for him.

The second healer was attentive and sympathetic. She asked the right questions, and this time, too tired to care about his punishment, Freddie admitted to the fall. It was the missing puzzle piece. The impact had caused compression in his lower back. For three months, something had been pressing where it shouldn't, setting off a chain of damage which, by now, couldn't be undone. The healer did what she could. It might feel a little better now, she said. It wouldn't get any worse. He could manage his pain with potions. But the nerve damage was probably forever.

The diagnosis, while crushing, came to Freddie as a relief. At last, he had answers. At last, people believed him. His leg did feel better; the pain and tingling were milder now, the flare-ups further between. He learned his triggers - running, climbing, crouching - and avoided them as best he could. Accepting his new limits wasn't easy. He missed being able to play in the park, to climb trees with his brother and sister, to clamber over fences and up abandoned railway embankments. He still could, but the pain and weakness made him slow, and that slowness burned; he hated being the one who held everybody up, the one everybody had to wait for. Even sitting upright for too long gave him trouble. He learned to slouch, stretching his leg out to relieve the aches and tingling. It was all very upsetting for a boy of seven years. Yet, despite his frustration, Freddie was happier than he'd been in months. Nobody could accuse him of lying any more. Nobody would ever doubt him again.

His school was apologetic. They seemed to want to reconcile, as they offered to let Freddie captain the new math club. He accepted, and under his guidance, the team thrived, going on to compete and place second in a county-wide tournament. Freddie appeared to have turned over a new leaf. Everybody was pleased - most of all his aunt and uncle, who liked to brag about his talent for algebra and insisted he demonstrate it at every family gathering. At first, Freddie enjoyed the attention. He had never been the star of anything before, and the praise was a rare bloom in a garden that didn't receive much light. But after a while, he began to see this affection for what it was - conditional. His aunt hadn't cared about him before he was clever. She hadn't even believed he was in pain, and now she wanted to take the credit for his success. She didn't love him; she only loved what he could do.

Freddie withdrew.
