Ben walked into the Great Hall, eyes scanning the room as he took it all in. He knew about magic, even though it wasn't a huge part of his household, but this was something that he hadn't even imagined. Eyes reaching the ceiling, he startled for a moment at the possibility of the ceiling not existing before coming to the conclusion that it had to be enchanted. Someone confirmed his suspicions a few seconds later and he grinned, eyes traveling down to peek curiously at the other first-years and some of the older students.
He had made small talk with two other first-year boys on the train ride over, but the pack had broken apart when the boats were reached. He stretched up on his toes, seeing if he could spot the other boys, but realized there was no possibility of reaching either one of them. Feet landed firmly back on the ground, Ben prepared himself for the long wait. He had already realized that the sorting was going alphabetically, and that he, with his last name being Yost, would be one of the last few to go.
The sorting of the other first-years left him plenty of time to consider what it would be like to be sorted into a house. There had been some uncertainty on his part of knowing what to expect and he was slightly taken aback when the hat on the stool started to speak. He watched, back up on his toes again, as the first few students went and sat under the hat. Sometimes the hat called out a house almost right awhile while other times there were pauses before the house name. Did that mean the hat was thinking? And, if so, what was it thinking about?
He watched as the group of first-years slowly diminished until he was one of the remaining few. He grinned when his name was called, scurrying up to sit under the hat while feelings of anxiety and excitement bubbled inside of him. He still wasn't quite sure what to make of the hat as it was lowered over his head. With the outside world disappearing and the prospect of the hat thinking about
him, Ben thought up the word "Hello?"
"Hmm. You could do fine in almost any house. Your desire for fulfilment, mixed with your sense of adventure, seems to place you most squarely as a GRYFFINDOR!"
