Second Years Lesson Two

Mallory was sometimes surprised by how much she loved this job. Even with the crankier kids, she just loved being here, loved teaching them. She was always looking forward to lessons. She smiled, humming as she adjusted her robes, a lilac today, with a little sprig of lilacs to match tucked into her mahogany curls. She smiled at the students as they came in, rubbing Amara lightly behind the ears as they seated themselves. The Sphynx cat stretched, yawned, and curled back up on top of Mallory’s paperwork. Maxim was somewhere in her room, not wanting to be seen that day. Peter was awake today, sitting in his rocker and chewing on a teething ring. She kept an eye on him, giving him a warm smile.

Mallory stood, moving in front of the students and greeting them all warmly. “Dobroye utro, my darlings,” she smoothed a hand over her robes. “To begin class, I would like to review last weeks charm, to make sure you understand what we’ve already done. Can anyone tell me what the charm was?” She smiled, calling on a student. “That’s right, dorogoy, Scourgify, two points for you. Can anyone else tell me the wand motion for it?” Mallory laughed warmly when given the proper answer. “Very good, my dear, it’s an ‘s’ motion. Two points for you as well.

Mallory flicked her hand, the chalk rising to the board. “Alright, my dears, look to the board. For class today, I want you to answer these three questions and turn them in to me on your way out. They probably won’t take you long, so once you’ve finished, please take the time to read the chapter for next weeks charms, Alohomora, and Colloportus. The locking and unlocking charms. You can also use the time to practice the Scourgify charm if you’d like. I’ll be available at all times, if you need me,” Mallory smiled, moving to pick up Peter as he started to fuss. She sat down, rocking him gently as the students filed out of class.

Points for first posters to answer the questions. Five points for homework. Full marks for study/attendance posts, one point for practicing last weeks spell.

Eli slid into into his chair next to Sayuri, flipping open his notebook with a loud sigh. His expression was mostly neutral, but his mood was already souring. Professor Grayveson’s overly saccharine demeanour grated on his nerves, and the lilac sprig in her hair didn’t help. “Can you believe her?” he muttered under his breath, making sure only Sayuri could hear.Dobroye utro, my darlings,he mimicked in a sickly sweet tone, rolling his eyes. “Why doesn’t she just pass out tea and biscuits while she’s at it?” He half-heartedly jotted down the homework answers, glancing at Sayuri with a smirk. “I’ll bet her next charm lesson will involve knitting sweaters for Peter over there,” he added, nodding toward the baby rocker. As Grayveson fussed over her son, Eli whispered, “Do you think she even knows half of us exist, or is this just ‘Bring Your Kid to Work’ day every day?” Instead of practicing Scourgify, which he had already mastered, Eli flipped through the next chapter and planned to tackle Alohomora on his own later - without Grayveson’s endless cooing.
1. Name something that has a lock.
Most doors
2. Name something that does not have a lock, but should.
Your mouth
3. How are you finding charms so far?
Please see question 2.

Very funny, Mr. Edogawa. You are within your rights to dislike myself or this class, but be respectful. I usually give extra points to students that make efforts in class, and while your work is exemplary and I won't change your grades, I will not be rewarding any extra points, and will take an additional five points away. Moving forward, please be at least cordial.

Please note, Eli's opinions are definitely not mine ~ Zazz

Lumos really wished he shared Charms with Jonah, it would be easier to help him get this stuff right if he was doing it in the class at the time. He knew Jonah was struggling still, and he probably would for the rest of his time at Hogwarts because he just seemed to learn differently to how most other people learned and unfortunately the professors only ever really seemed to teach one way. He sat in his usual spot, tossing a casual glance at the fussing baby in the rocker. He barely paid attention to Professor Grayveson’s warm greetings, though the lilac sprig in her hair made him snort under his breath - it was all just so... precious. But he didn't dislike Professor Grayveson, honestly he wished he knew how she was so damn cheerful all of the time. She certainly wasn't the worst professor, that was Professor Carter, there was just something about the man that rubbed Lumos the wrong way every time. When she started the review, Lumos leaned back lazily, letting the keeners answer. At the mention of Scourgify, he gave a dramatic yawn and flicked his wand at the grimy dish from last week he’d purposely stashed in his bag. When the class moved onto the homework, he scratched out his answers quickly before heading out of the class in search of Jonah for more Charms practice.

Beatrice had still not overcome her embarrassment from last week’s lesson, but here she was, attempting to be the best student she could and ignoring the rampant bullying she was now experiencing from a few select students. The Ravenclaw took her usual seat; pulled out her notes, and began listening as the professor noted they needed to review. Ignoring the anxiety welling up, Bea raised her hand when the first question was propositioned to the class. “Scourgify,” she answered, glad that she received some points even though this charm would be her least favorite ever. She raised her hand again for the next question, but another student beat her to it. Bea grimaced, listening as Professor Grayveson continued.

When they were told to practice, Bea hesitantly looked around, unsure if now was the right time. She took a few plates and successfully cleaned them on the fifth, sixth, and seventh tries at the spells. Taking notes about the reading for next week, Bea gathered her things when class was over and headed to the library.

Sayuri wasn't exactly happy knowing that she was attending yet another class with Professor Grayveson and her son. It was getting impossible to think that they would ever not have the baby in the classroom and therefore have a teacher that was only paying half - if at all - of their attention to the class. A class that involved practical magic. Didn't exactly make for a safe environment to practice spells if your teacher was barely keeping an eye on the class. This would have never flown in Mahoutokuro. The greeting grated on her nerves and it was obvious that it was grating on Eli's too. As it was her brother was already close to snapping, and she wasn't far behind. "Here I thought she would be smart enough to leave the kid after Grey's little slip last class. Apparently I was hoping for something that she didn't exactly have," she muttered back to her brother. "Why are we even reviewing the incantation and wand movement for a spell we just learned? Not to mention spent the whole class doing?" she hissed. One would think that the smart thing to have taught them would at least be a preview to the next spell. But of course the answer lay with the baby. "Ah, dear Peter's fault of course. I thought our parents were stupid but this is just sad," she said as she brought out her writing implements to start on the mockery of a homework they had.

Winnie wanted to go to the halloween feast this year, but she felt sure she wouldn’t be able to justify it. She knew it was a pointless night and her time was better served on other things. She could say she’d have all the work done, but the feast ate into her study time and her parents would be frustrated if she did that, and she was a good daughter. Or at least, she tried to be. She would listen to them, they knew what was best. Winnie grabbed the things she needed for the day, thinking that she should maybe speak to Vikram about it, he might be able to give her the out she wanted, but she focused currently on just heading to class.

Winnie walked into the charms classroom and took her usual spot in the room. She glanced up at the professor as the wman got started. She had enjoyed doing the charm in the week prior and was hoping for more of that, but it seemed they were doing some revision. She wasn’t quick enough to answer any of the questions which only added to her frustration. She took a note of the homework as the professor handed it to them and then gladly she was able to head out of the room.

I'm enjoying it!

It was her second lesson in charms for the year and Lilith was excited but also a little apprehensive, she had found herself not liking the upbeat nature of her professor as much as she had last year, but she was blaming it on having gotten out of bed on the wrong leg that morning. She refused to find anyone kind annoying, so when she entered the room she gave the professor a warm smile and then a wave and smile to the baby. Although it wasn't probably the most safe thing to have your baby in a classroom full of second years practicing magic she still felt a little surge of warmth in her chest at the sight of a miniature human. Babies were cute, when they weren't her responsibility.

The lesson was nice but she heard snorts and what she could only assume was rude remarks and such around the classroom, trying to focus on the professor herself. She raised her hand on the second question. "It is an 's' movement!" She replied making a tiny s with her quill. The rest of the lesson was more or less calmer and Lilith made sure to take down the homework before leaving.

Imogen Styx-Cade wondered if this year would be a good year. She was doing okay in classes already, but she wanted to do more. Imogen also did not want to use all of her effort either. Was there a way to get good grades and not try? Imogen would have to figure it out. Maybe she could just charm people. She might not be part-veela but maybe she could mimic their gimmicks and go from there. Imogen shoved that thought to the side, as she grabbed her backpack and left the Slytherin girl dorms to head to class. Imogen walked in the Charms classroom and sat down in her seat. Professor Grayveson greeted them once more, and then let them know what spell they would be working on. Rather, what they were doing. They just needed to answer a couple of questions, and then they could leave. Wow, she did not even have to try for that one. She wrote down her answers, turned them in, and left to go read a little bit over her textbook. If she remembered that is.

Ravage Zhefarovich hoped that this week would be better than the previous week because the first week was always too boring. It was introductory. They were never any fun. Ravage wanted something to entice his interest. He packed his things together and knew that today might not be as bad. He could try to look at it in a different light. While that was only a temporary solution, he could still try. Ravage left the Slytherin house to walk to his next class. He walked alone - which was not unusual. He still liked his privacy and hated making small talk. That was the absolute worst. Ravage walked in the Charms classroom and then sat down in a seat. Professor Grayveson had a few review questions for them over the spell they learned previously. And then a small assignment. But that was it. Ravage sighed and answered the questions. He turned them in and left. He was definitely wrong about this week being more interesting. It was even worse than the previous one.
