Second Years Lesson Three

Mallory couldn’t believe the semester was already halfway over. She really couldn’t. She thought she really had been doing well, none of the students seemed to outwardly hate her, though she could sense several that seemed annoyed in classes. That was to be expected, however, she didn’t expect every student to adore classes. Peter was currently in a wrap, asleep against her chest. She kept one hand on his back, humming lightly, eager for the class to begin.

Mallory smiled as the students came in, motioning for them to stay up front with her. “Please stay up front with me, my dears. Today we’re going to be practicing a few spells elsewhere in the castle,” she told them, tucking her dark hair behind her ear. Her hair was falling freely down her back today, her robes a soft green. She had woven a bit of dark ivy through a single small braid that wrapped around her head.

Today we will be learning the locking and unlocking charm. Let’s begin with the unlocking charm. Wands out, please,” she instructed, keeping an eye on all of her students. “The incantation for this is Alohomora. Say it together please everyone: al-LOH-ha-MOR-ah.” She went over the pronunciation a few times, smiling at the students as they seemed to get a grip on the pronunciation. “Now onto the locking charm. This is Colloportus. Ready? cull-low-PORE-tus." She ran over this one a few times as well, smiling as the students seemed to grasp this one as well.

She clapped her hands together after a few moments. “Alright, everyone, very good. Now, we shall head down to the second floor, let’s go, all together,” she herded them back out the door, leading them to the empty hallway. "Is everyone here?" She asked as they came to a stop, looking around to count the students and make sure no second years had tried to make a bid for freedom. "Okay, partner up please, and choose a door. Most of the classrooms on this floor are empty so you can practice locking and unlocking the doors." She smiled warmly, and wanting to give them more incentive to practice, she added, "For every door unlocked, and every door locked, using the spells, you will earn your house one point,"

She hoped her students would do well. She would be watching to see how the students were getting on and had a small notebook with the name of each of her students on it so she could keep track of who earned how many points. "Once you are finished, come and let me know please, otherwise good luck!" She smiled, watching them as they worked.

Total of eight points only please.

Lumos strolled into the classroom, immediately clocking the baby snoozing against the professor. Great, it's a field trip day, he thought, smirking faintly as she motioned for them to gather up front. he liked the field trips because it got them out of the classroom and he definitely preferred a slightly different environment to a normal classroom. As she explained the lesson, LUmos practiced the incantation with precision, paying particular attention to the pronunciation and wand movements. "al-LOH-ha-MOR-ah" he wanted to make sure he was getting it right, because he liked and was generally good at charms. Byt the tie they reached the second floor hallway, Lumos had already scoped out the emptiest-looking door and grabbed someone to partner with. "You handle the locking, I'll do the fun part," he said, aiming his wand with exaggerated precision and unlocking the door on his first try. He gave a dramatic bow before swapping roles and locking it with a casual "Colloportus." Over the next few minutes, Lumos made a game of earning points as quickly as possible, tossing his partner a smug grin after each success. When they finished, he sauntered back to Professor Grayveson, announcing their total with a flourish before leaning against the wall to watch the others struggle. Not bad for a day’s work.

There was not much going on but at the same time there was a lot going on for Lilith and lessons were just a way for her to forget all about everything else and focus on the lesson at hand. Though it was easier said than done with her slippery mind, Lilith arrived at her charms lesson with a smile and was excited to hear they'd be practicing elsewhere today. Listening to her words the second year repeated the incantations a few times silently, trying to get it right so that when time came to cast the charms she'd get the pronunciation right. She followed the professor eagerly and soon they were at the second floor. Lilith partnered up with a classmate and when she heard a game she gave her partner a grin. "Oh, that's fun let's see which one wins locker on unlocker any preferences which one you'd like to be first?" She asked and ended up being the unlocker, well it suited her. They switched a few times and Lilith was having fun, she got eight unlocks all together which wasn't too bad in her opinion. This had been a fun lesson, Lili walked to the professor letting her know their scores before sitting back to wait for everyone else to finish it up.

Eli stuck close to Sayuri as the professor herded the class down the hall, his expression an unimpressed scowl. He had rather thought her removing points from him would help her to understand that not everyone appreciated her pet names and that she would stop, but apparently that just wasn’t the case and to say he was less than impressed was an understatement - good to know complaints went unanswered in this school, but he sort of already knew that though. Whatever the Headmaster had been going on about at the feast, he maybe she have looked into what his staff were doing. He looked at Sayuri when they were told to partner up and snagged her immediately. “Don’t you dare leave me,” he hissed at her, making sure she wasn’t about to abandon him in this hell of a class. When they reached their assigned door, Eli took out his wand with a sigh. “Right, let’s do this,” and he pointed his wand at the lock, muttering “Alohomora” his tone disinterested in any of it. After a few successful repetitions of both charms, Eli leaned closer to Sayuri, lowering his voice. “How many points do you think she’s even keeping track of? Or is she just scribbling in that notebook for show?” He glanced toward Professor Grayveson, his irritation fading slightly in the face of shared camaraderie with his cousin. “Let’s finish these and get out of here before she decides we need a group hug or something.”

Eoghan had been following the rest of the classes and they headed down towards a free corridor to practise the locking spells on some empty classroom doors, but the Ravenclaw's focus was entirely on the small bundle strapped to the professors chest. He was still refusing to participate in the lessons and practises properly until the baby was out of the way but that didn't seem to be the case this lesson, either. Eoghan watched as the other students got on with the task at hand, no one else seemed to mind. Regardless of whether it was going to cost him some house points and a lower grade, Eoghan was determined to make his point known. "Professor," he said, stepping a little closer to the woman as the others began to unlock the doors around them, "I'm not comfortable with you bringing your son to these lessons," his cheeks flushed red. It was true that Eoghan didn't know her situation and maybe there wasn't anyone else that could look after him, but would it have been so hard to ask another professor to take care of him for an hour so the students could practise in peace? "I want to learn Charms, but I won't cast spells if he's here." Eoghan was doing his best not to let his voice wobble, but stayed firm to himself. After a moment he gave the woman a small nod, and without looking at his classmates he turned to walk back down the hall, refusing to participate in the lesson at all.

Sayuri arrived at the classroom, her eyes flickering briefly to the professor in annoyance. Really? Still bringing the baby to the class? This was hardly a nursery. Besides if anyone else aside from students were allowed here then perhaps her dad should have been bringing Lewis to his classes. Not that their dad would let distractions happen in his class. On second thought, their dad totally would. Still, at least her dad was teaching Muggle Studies and spells wouldn't be cast everywhere and thus would need supervision. Sayuri rolled her eyes at Eli grabbing her, as if she had any intention of partnering up with other people, she hardly had any friends in this school. She walked with her brother, checking each of the doors, "Colloportus," she cast with every unlocked door they came across. She did it with three doors. She snorts, "I don't think she'll manage to track everyone when she needs to keep watch over Peter dear over there," she whispered back right before they switched roles and she had to cast "Alohomora," at a locked door. She was honestly done with this activity by the third door. "Come on, let's go. I'm tired of this," she said as she nodded over to the professor so they can grumpily make their leave.
