Second Years, Lesson One

FIRST LESSON
Noel was reading over some of the homework assignments from the first years, figuring to start with it right away. But than the second years began to walk in the classroom and he put the assignments beside him on an pile, to focus on this class. He than stood up and welcomed them with an friendly smile. When everyone was inside he closed the door with an easy wave of his hand. And took an good look of the group of students he had in front of them. '' Hello everyone and welcome back to another year of Defence Against the Dark Arts.'' He was sure the students could tell by now that he was an different face than previous year. So he would explain and introduce himself for them. ''For the ones who forgot. My name is Noel Waldgrave. And I’m your professor for Defence Against the Dark arts for the upcoming years.'' He than explained making sure he watched the students in the eye. He didn’t had to go through the rules, since it must be clear by now for the second years, and they knew the fundamental basics of the Dark Arts.

He than walked towards the middle of the classroom and continued. '' In this semester we will talk about a variety of prank-like curses and jinxes. Like the Jelly-Leg Curse and the Trip Jinx, for example. In addition to that, we will also be handling the counter-spells for these prank-like curses and jinxes.'' He than saw some exciting faces but some seemed to be hoping for more than talking. '' And ofcourse that means that you will be practising these in class yourselves.'' He than said and gave an small playful wink as suddenly some seemed to be very excited and smiled. He than paused and walked back to the front to stand there. He than turned to the blackboard behind him and looked back to the class for an moment. '' I will be using the blackboard behind me to write things down. I would advise you to write along with me.'' He paused an moment to let the people who hadn’t already take their stuff could do that now. He than turned around to the class. '' So, who can tell me the definition of a curse or a jinx?'' He than asked while looking around. And pointed at an person close. And smiled and nodded approvingly as the student answered. ''Very well.'' He said and gave them a smile. And turned towards the blackboard to write the good definition down. Than moved on turning to the class again. ''And who can tell me the difference between a jinx and a curse?'' He than asked, choosing an different student in the back to answer. And than gave an friendly smile as they gave their answer. '' That’s right, good job.'' He than replied. Satisfied with it he writed it down on the blackboard. And looked at the students to see when he could continue.


He than let the blackboard for what it was for now and leaned at his desk. '' Next week we will practice our first jinx.'' He than dropped and knew they would be excited, most of them than at least. He would let them know next week that he didn’t want fooling around. For now he let them be excited. As he looked at the time, he figured it was time to close it off. '' The time is almost up. For homework, I want everyone to write down the names of three jinxes and three curses, and write down the effects of each jinx and curse. It has to be turned in before the start of next week’s class.'' He told them and made sure that, that messenge was clear. He than gave them an friendly smile and went sitting down at his desk. And dismissed the class, to return to the first years homework.

Roleplay the lesson. As stated above, complete the assignment for extra credit:
- List three jinxes and the effects of each
- List three curses and the effects of each
- The first two students to answer Professor Waldgrave’s questions will also receive extra credit. Only one question for one student please.
 
Being back at school was almost surreal now, and he wasn't sure what to do. He didn't know if he was excited about this or if he was disappointed that the time away had been so turbulent. He'd been looking forward to the down time, hoping to catch up on some things he'd been neglecting, but the addition of two new siblings (he loved them of course) and the fact his sister was pregnant and then had her baby just before they got back to school, it had meant that the down time he'd expected had not actually happened unfortunately. So as he walked into the class, he was feeling a little melancholy, he didn't feel like he got to recharge and it was disconcerting. Still, he would do what he could quickly, get everything sorted like he was expected to. He carefully and neatly jotted down notes as the professor spoke, appreciating the clarity with which the professor explained everything. When Professor Waldgrave asked about the definition of jinxes or curses, Elijah raised his hand cautiously. “A jinx is a spell that causes minor inconveniences or irritations, usually more annoying than harmful,” he explained, relieved when the professor nodded approvingly and wrote his answer on the board. He soon returned to his notes, already thinking about the potential for practicing these spells in class. He wasn’t particularly excited about causing chaos but knew the practical experience would be invaluable for understanding counter-spells and defence. As the lesson drew to a close, Elijah noted the homework assignment and quietly began brainstorming examples for his list. After class, he lingered for a moment to ask a clarifying question about one of the spells they would be learning next week. “Professor Waldgrave, will we also be learning counter-jinxes in the same session, or is that in a later lesson?”
Jinxes:

Jelly legs Jinx - makes the legs wobble
Trip Jinx - causes the target to stumble and fall
Ritusempra - tickling, and uncontrollable laughter

Curses:

Petrificus Totalus - temporarily paralyses the target
Bat-bogey - transforms bogeys into large bats like things
Langlock - tongue to top of mouth
 
It was weird to be back in school, Jonah thought. He stepped into the classroom quietly, keeping to the side to avoid drawing attention - he knew he had this class with Elijah. When the professor introduced himself again - Jonah didn't know why - and began the lesson, he kept his gaze solidly on the desk even as the professor posed questions to the class. As the discussion shifted to curses and jinxes, his grip on his quill tightened slightly. The mention of practicing them next week made him uneasy and he thought of all the ways he would mess up. His attention snapped back when Elijah confidently answered the question and was praised - he tried to swallow that twinge of inadequacy, told himself it was fine, and instead focused on copying down notes. As the class was dismissed, Jonah packed his things quickly, getting ahead of most of the students as they filed out.
 
She already missed her plants, she'd started collecting them and putting them in her dorm, only in her area though because she didn't want to make a mess for the rest of the girls. She sat towards the middle of the room, her wand balanced on her desk as she doodled a flower on the corner of her parchment. This wasn't her favourite class, she preferred the simplicity that was herbology, but she tried to keep an open mind. Professor Waldgrave’s introduction was clear and approachable, and she couldn’t help but grin a little at his playful wink. She didn't put her hand up to answer a question when they were asked, she wasn't really the kind of girl who felt comfortable doing that, she preferred to stay in her lane, which was plants. Ask her which plant used what soil though and she was definitely your girl. She made notes on the difference between jinxes and curses, she hoped the examples they would soon practice would be fun and that no one would get hurt accidentally. She packed up shortly after, thinking about what kind of things she could mark down for the jinxes and curses.
 
Eurydice walked into Defense Against the Dark Arts, taking a seat beside Eli as she looked around the room for Jonah. Her cousin had been out of sorts recently, and she thought the two of them could walk to class together but he was already gone by the time she'd gone looking for him. Eli at least had easy enough to spot. As the professor introduced himself, Eury rolled her eyes. Does he introduce himself every year or does he think they're all stupid enough to forget him after a mere two months? The mention of prank-like curses and jinxes didn't make him any more likable to her, either. She didn't bother answering the questions, though she did listen to Eli answering. She took notes on that and resolved to read up on the subject despite not being overly enthusiastic about what this professor was teaching. As the professor dismissed the class, she gathered her belongings and walked out with Eli, trying to think of how to deal with the assignment that had just been given to them.
 
Eoghan hadn't exactly done well in his lessons last year, in fact he hadn't even passed some of his subjects. He'd come to Hogwarts purely to learn as much as he could so that when he graduated he could take care of his sister in a way no one else could, but he couldn't even get a good grade in his first year. How was he meant to get good OWLs and NEWTs? Sometimes he wondered if he'd been too distracted, or maybe the problem was that he was pushing himself too hard it meant he couldn't concentrate.

Taking a seat a little apprehensively in the first lesson of his second year, he sat next to Lili in the hopes that maybe distancing himself in the past had been doing more harm than good. Hopefully this year they'd be practicing jinxes and curses that they could use in the student duels. It would be practical magic that Eoghan (while not usually for violence) was keen to be confident about how to use. It would have been nice to call himself a dueling champion after all. "A curse is more powerful, and malicious in intent," Eoghan said out loud when the professor asked them for the differences. "Sometimes there can be long-lasting effects," he added, wondering if that was why Eli was keen to know if they'd be learning how to undo them too. Eoghan continued to make some notes as the professor explained in more detail, including examples of other jinxes and curses, and hoped that this year would be more successful than his first.
 
Lilith had mixed feeling on Defence Against The Dark Arts. On one hand she had enjoyed the class but on the other? It had quite literally terrified her. Learning how some were willing to commit such evil acts was less than pleasant, but at least she was also learning to defend herself against such so it was a win in the end? Lilith took seat at the second row, quill and parchment ready for any notes she might take. Listening to the professor was lesss daunting, so far there was nothing too bad, no practitioners of dark arts who had tortured several innocents for essentially the fun of it being mentioned, she'd count that as a win. Lilith smiled as Elijah answered a question and raised her own hand for the next, but Eoghan next to her was faster. Lilith lowered her hand and looked at the boy next to her with a smile, she was very proud of him. Taking notes and then took down the homework before leaving.

Jinxes

- Jelly-legs jinx: Causes the jinxed persons legs to turn into jelly.
- Trip Jinx: Causes the target to trip.
- Tarantallegra: Causes the targets feet to dance uncontrollably.


Curses

-
Slug Vomiting Curse: Causes the cursed to vomit slugs.
- Petrificus Totalus: Petrifies the body of the cursed.
- The Killing Curse: It is one of the three unforgivable curses, causes the cursed to die instantly, albeit painlessly.
 
Daiki walked into the potions classroom and took his usual spot in the room. His gaze moved to the front of the classroom as the man was getting started. He nodded along and took a few notes from what the professor was saying and making sure that he was getting down what others were saying. He didn’t really know and had never really thought about why they might be different. What made one one type and another the other when they were so similar. Eventually the professor told them the spell they’d be looking at in the next lesson and then Daiki was able to pack up and leave the room.
 
Forrest hadn’t enjoyed defence against the dark arts lessons in his first year, not that he’d enjoyed many of his lessons, so he wasn’t thrilled to be heading back to Professor Waldgrave’s classroom for another go around. Hopefully things would be more interesting, more engaging and less theory heavy than their previous year. There were only so many lectures on dark wizards Forrest could take before he zoned out and his mind wandered to the greenhouse.

Professor Waldgrave reintroduced himself for the benefit of anyone new or who might have forgot him, which Forrest would have believed as the man was quite forgettable. They were told they would be learning prank like jinxes and hexes which sounded interesting, as what they were learning sounded relatively low risk he wondered if they would get chance to try them out on each other? Surely they would if they were the kind of spells that might get cast in the hallways anyway, though he could imagine Professor Waldgrave giving a speech on how it wasn’t responsible to teach them how to prank each other merely to be aware of what could be cast at them.

Forest was immediately proven wrong however as Professor Waldgrave ended the lesson by telling them they would practice their first jinx in their next lesson, the man had quickly gone up in his estimations and he was no looking forward to the lesson. Not because of what they would be learning, he didn’t care for pranks all that much, he was just glad they would be doing something practical.
 
Kairi was relieved to be back in classes, to be back at the school. She just felt more comfortable, more stable here. It was nice, having somewhere that felt safe. She tried to spend more time in the common room, just enjoying the freedom to curl up, to read or color or look through magazines. Whatever struck her fancy.

There were still classes to be getting on with, however, so she grabbed her bag and headed to the lesson. She smiled at Daiki, taking her seat with him. She was a little nervous for DADA but that was alright... probably. Kairi took a few notes, just sitting back, listening and watching the others in class. She scribbled out the homework, turning it in with a smile before hurrying after Daiki.
 
Back to school for his second year, Vikram was ready to get back into the swing of things. He'd set up his dorm the way he'd liked (or at least, his space in it) and he'd settled into a routine he liked. Morning runs with Winnie, reading a bit of his book, a shoer and some yoga to start the day. It was just a really nice, relaxing way to start his days.

Ready to start class, Vikram made his way and found a seat. This wasn't a class with Winnie, sadly, so he found a seat relatively near one of his roommates. He offered them a small smile as he pulled out his parchments. He listened to the Professor go on. There wasn't a lot to really note down, but he was curious to see how he would handle the spellwork. Lost in thought, he packed his things back up and headed out again, humming under his breath.
 
Nox didn’t like Professor Waldgrave, he hadn’t enjoyed his lessons during the previous year and hadn’t been all that impressed with the way he taught about the dark arts, or seemingly his knowledge on the subject. It must have been weird for him to work in the shadow of an actual auror like Nox’s father. As much as Nox had issues with his father’s method, he had a feeling he’d be a better teacher. He did however perk up when Professor Waldgrave announced they would be learning about prank like jinxes which sounded right up his alley, Lumos would love it too but unfortunately they didn’t share the class.

He didn’t participate in the class all that much, Nox just took notes on the things the professor wrote on the blackboard and tried to pay attention as he talked about to difference between a jinx and a curse. Nox wasn’t sure he came away from the lesson actually knowing, but he was looking forward to learning the trip jinx before Lumos so he could cast it on his brother. Once the lesson was over Nox gathered up the notes he’d been making and stuffed them into his bag then made his way out of the classroom.
