Finley should have known the owlery wasn't going to smell all that pleasant, honestly. He didn't mind it, but it did seem to smell faintly of aging feathers and something a little less pleasant that he was choosing not to think about. It was quiet, high up in the tower and far enough away that he felt confident he could let Lemon run around whilst he worked on finding an owl to send his dad a letter. He'd received one over breakfast this morning asking about Mania and Callie, and he'd been awfully surprised about it, since he hadn't realised his dad would even know his best friends yet. He knew his dad could speak to snakes but this seemed a little far fetched. Had he sent Glimmer to spy on him anyway? He wouldn't have put it past him, that was for sure. He climbed the spiral staircase two steps at a time, a letter clutched tightly in his hand. It was slightly crumpled from the effort of stuffing it into his pocket once he'd wrote it, but ti would do. He was sure his dad wouldn't mind - as long as he was hearing from him. He had planned on waiting a bit before writing him, but he supposed this would be okay. As he reached the top of the steps, Lemon bounded into the owlery and started barking at the owls, "Lemon! Come on girl, leave them alone!" He said, quickly chasing after her to try and fend her off, but he was too busy laughing at her to really work on trying to stop her.

The owlery wasn’t a pleasant experience but without an owl of his own Lincoln had to brave the fowl air to use a school owl to send letters to his mother. She’d show up at the school if he went too long without writing and given the proximity of her pub, thankfully she didn’t live there anymore like she apparently used to before she married his dad. He finished tying his letter to the leg of one of the school owls and shooed it away so it go and deliver it when he heard the voice of another student. “Do you mind! You’re spooking the owls,”

Nope.

Finley looks up from where he’s trying to catch Lemon when someone speaks to him. “Right, sorry, she’s really excited to send a letter to dad,” he said, though he honestly didn’t know if it was true. Do dogs get excited about letters? Well he was sure Lemon was, that was probably why she was chasing the owls about after all, she wanted to get one of them to send her letter. Finley wasn’t sure if she’d written one, but maybe she had magical dog parents too. Well he had a magical parent, not a magical dog parent. Okay now things were confusing. “She’ll settle down in a bit,” he said as she chased a particularly bold owl around the owlery.
