The other day I found myself wondering... How did all the people on HNZ find out about roleplay forums?
I know my background isn't one I'm likely to find in anyone else on here, but I'm interested to see how everyone started out.
I first started RPing on Neopets, back in the day, when I was about 10 (and totally lied about my age to get on the forums... what a rebel
) It was never particularly literate or long-lasting, but I was super passionate about it.
After Neopets, my next online obsession was the dolling community, which I'm still sorta part of. (The Wikipedia page doesn't really do dolling as an art form justice though - this is my most recent doll, a self-portrait for a sig on a forum)
Base
The dolling community had a whole roleplaying offshoot of rather elite, exclusive forums, where two paragraphs was a short post, all sigs/avs had to be pixelled, and biographies had to be detail approved by staff before you were allowed to start RPing. I started going on them when I was about 12 or 13, and got COMPLETELY hooked, to the point of adminning for quite a few RP forums over the years. That whole elitist, SUPERLITERATE community is where I really got hooked on RPing, though I was taking a long break from forums (Though I was still RPing daily on MSN with friends) after an ugly betrayal by some forum friends when I found HNZ, and it was kind of a culture shock after only ever RPing on sites with such tight rules about every single thing. I find it slightly frustrating sometimes RPing with people who have such short (by my standards
) posts, and seeing characters that wouldn't have made the cut in terms of backstory, but it's also a relief to be somewhere so relaxed and friendly, where people just don't mind what you're doing, as long as you're having a great time. (I sound like some stodgy old professor talking about all the Rules Of Roleplaying when I get into it
) And to be honest, even though I get cravings for all the super-strict rules sometimes, I really prefer the way things are run on HNZ
Everyone getting a chance to have fun and learn about RPing and writing and character development is a much nicer way to do things.
So, what about you... what started you RPing?
