Seraphina rapped her fingers on top of the Slytherin table, waiting for Jenna to arrive. She hadn't seen her friend since school started back, and even though she wasn't sure if Jenna truly thought they were friends, it was the only person Seraphina kind of enjoyed hanging out with at the moment. She wasn't hungry and had felt less and less so since her nonna's death. Things in general just seemed bland - she couldn't quite place why exactly she was feeling that way. But it didn't really make a difference. She was stuck at the castle again, and this time, she was short a pen-pal. Picking up a roll, she started to pick it into small bites as she looked around at the other students.

@Jenna Irons

Jenna's holiday had seen her family change, in ways she was still coming to terms with. It was as if she had become an only child overnight, Blake's trophies and photos pulled down from the walls without a word spoken. Though in the past Jenna had quite often thought it would be nice to be an only child, to have all of her parents love and attention to herself, their household had become cold overnight. She had tried not to let it get to her, but it was a strange relief to be back at school. She had followed her parents lead, ignoring her brother entirely, but that could be more difficult at mealtimes. So she was relieved to see Seraphim's has elected to join her, giving the Gryffindor a cheerful smile as she sat down opposite her. "Hey girl!" Jenna said brightly. "How were your holidays?"

Seraphina had started nibbling on her bread when Jenna finally arrived. As usual, the pep in her step was ten miles ahead of where Seraphina could ever be. She dissolved the little bit of roll in her mouth and then gave a half smile towards her friend. "Hi, Jenna," she said in usual grandeur. She wasn't completely sure if spilling the beans on her grandmother was the route she wanted to go yet, but seeing as the Gryffindor had let it leak to Ivy, what harm could it really do. "Just about as horrible as usual. Was yours decent?"

Brooke had noticed Seraphina sitting at the Slytherin table, casting a few pointed glances around and then across at the Gryffindor table until Jenna Irons had arrived. It was an interesting pair, and Brooke couldn't help be curious if the two were as close as they seemed as they got chatting. Deciding there was nothing for it, Brooke scooted a little closer, trying to look like she had only just noticed the pair. "Oh hi, Seraphina. I didn't know you had friends. In Slytherin," she said brightly, her pause between sentences brief but intentional. She wasn't sure why anyone would risk befriending someone as volatile as Serephina My, but then again, she was talking to a younger student, so maybe Jenna just didn't know any better. "Just catching up after the holidays?"

Jenna hadn't quite been prepared for the holiday question to be turned back on her, but she gave a quick, charming laugh. "Oh, it was epic, duh!" She said brightly. "I went riding every day, Hogwarts really needs a stable. This place is so lame, can you even believe we're only allowed boring pets?!" She asked with a roll of her eyes, reaching for an apple. As she reached out though, another girl decided this conversation was a place for her, and Jenna's eyes flicked over the newcomer warily. A Slytherin, older, kind of boring looking. After assessing the newcomer Jenna ignored her entirely, looking to Seraphina pointedly and asking with a small laugh, "Do we know her?"

Seraphina wasn't surprised how enthused Jenna was about her break. "Riding like horses, right?" she asked, making sure she remembered which animal her friend thought was so cool. "Toads are kind of cool," the Gryffindor mumbled, fascinated with how lumpy many of them looked. As Brooke suddenly interrupted their conversation, Seraphina pursed her lips and look down at her roll. She didn't like the insinuation that she was friendless, especially in front of her only friend at the moment. "Yes. With friends," she said pointedly at Brooke and then turned back to Jenna. "If you wanna know untrustyworthy people, then sure." She still hadn't forgot that Brooke threatened to tell someone about her living in a tent to escape her roommates.

Brooke tried not to let it show on her face when the younger Slytherin dismissed her. She'd known Jenna vaguely by sheer virtue of her being Blake Iron's sister and her own association with Natalia, but clearly she'd misjudged something here. She gave Seraphina a tight smile, trying to decide if this conversation was worth salvaging. She knew Seraphina was probably a lost cause, but apparently Jenna wasn't nearly as sociable as her older brother, so perhaps a tactical retreat was pertinent. "Sorry, didn't realize I was interrupting, carry on catching up," she said, tilting her head dismissively and deciding to leave the table outright. Last thing she needed was to sit awkwardly out of earshot while these two carried on with whatever conversation they were having. "It's so nice to see you inside, Seraphina. And getting along with people. Very cute, suits you," she added brightly, sliding her bag over her shoulder and giving the two girls a little wave before making a measuredly timed exit.

Jenna rolled her eyes and laughed softly at Seraphina's question. "Duh like horses!" She grinned, though her face twisted at the girl's next suggestion. "Ew, no, toads are super gross." She said firmly, giving Seraphina a warning look. She reserved the vast majority of her substantial disdain for the other girl who had interrupted them though, looking her up and down with undisguised disgust at Seraphina's remark. She was relieved the other girl got up to leave, though given her parting comments, Jenna couldn't resist a firm shot of her own. "It's so brave when people like that think they can talk to people like us." She remarked to Seraphina, pointedly loud enough for the other girl to hear. "Especially with such an out of style hairdo. So brave."

Seraphina felt her shoulders drop a little when Jenna didn't like her idea of a pet. There was nothing wrong with toads - they were just misunderstood, like her. Everyone wants the cats and owls because they were fluffy or useful. But there must be a reason people used to keep toads as pets. Seraphina just knew it. Even though Brooke left, her comments stayed with the Gryffindor as she started to ball up her fists. It helped a little that Jenna made fun of the girl, but at the same time, this was not the first comment made to her recently about her lack of friendships. "Maybe you should give her some of your hair potions," she suggested, not really feeling like a snarky comment as the negative thoughts started to flow through again. She took another bite of her roll. "I hate how mean the kids are here. I wish someone would finally just show them how much it hurts to hear comments like that," she said, feeling frustrated enough to be a bit vulenerable with Jenna.

Jenna laughed lightly at Seraphina's comment about the hair potions. "Oh, I could try, but between you and me, it'd take a miracle to fix a look that tragic." She smiled, taking a sip of her pumpkin juice. Jenna rolled her eyes at Seraphina's comment about kids at Hogwarts. "Totally. Kids here will just say like, the worst stuff and act like it doesn't even matter. I wish we could like, give them a taste of their own medicine or whatever. Show everyone it's not okay to be a bully just 'cause you're jealous of people who are cooler than you."

Seraphina wasn't too concerned about Brooke's hair if she was being honest, but the sentiment still stood true - there was no reason for some of the kids to be mean. "Yeah, almost like we could write down everything they say and share it with everyone." Seraphina tended to hear more than others realized, as she usually lived in the background without many friends or positive interactions.
