Pottermore

Has anyone been keeping up on the new info that was released?

I found a PDF the other day of a bunch of the Pottermore stuffs all compiled together - it's 98 pages long.
I'm starting to fear that Pottermore really will be the encyclopedia we were all promised. :(

I don't go near Pottermore anymore. There's just too much information and it gets really contradictory at points.

I actually copied it if anyone wants to read it?

I'll post it anyway xD

The Potter family is a very old one, but it was never (until the birth of Harry James Potter) at the very forefront of wizarding history, contenting itself with a solid and comfortable existence in the backwaters.

Potter is a not uncommon Muggle surname, and the family did not make the so-called ‘Sacred Twenty-Eight’ for this reason; the anonymous compiler of that supposedly definitive list of pure-bloods suspected that they had sprung from what he considered to be tainted blood. The wizarding Potter family had illustrious beginnings, however, some of which was hinted at in Deathly Hallows.

In the Muggle world ‘Potter’ is an occupational surname, meaning a man who creates pottery. The wizarding family of Potters descends from the twelfth-century wizard Linfred of Stinchcombe, a locally well-beloved and eccentric man, whose nickname, ‘the Potterer’, became corrupted in time to ‘Potter’. Linfred was a vague and absent-minded fellow whose Muggle neighbours often called upon his medicinal services. None of them realised that Linfred’s wonderful cures for pox and ague were magical; they all thought him a harmless and lovable old chap, pottering about in his garden with all his funny plants. His reputation as a well-meaning eccentric served Linfred well, for behind closed doors he was able to continue the series of experiments that laid the foundation of the Potter family’s fortune. Historians credit Linfred as the originator of a number of remedies that evolved into potions still used to this day, including Skele-gro and Pepperup Potion. His sales of such cures to fellow witches and wizards enabled him to leave a significant pile of gold to each of his seven children upon his death.

Linfred’s eldest son, Hardwin, married a beautiful young witch by the name of Iolanthe Peverell, who came from the village of Godric’s Hollow. She was the granddaughter of Ignotus Peverell. In the absence of male heirs, she, the eldest of her generation, had inherited her grandfather’s invisibility cloak. It was, Iolanthe explained to Hardwin, a tradition in her family that the possession of this cloak remained a secret, and her new husband respected her wishes. From this time on, the cloak was handed down to the eldest in each new generation.

The Potters continued to marry their neighbours, occasionally Muggles, and to live in the West of England, for several generations, each one adding to the family coffers by their hard work and, it must be said, by the quiet brand of ingenuity that had characterised their forebear, Linfred.

Occasionally, a Potter made it all the way to London, and a member of the family has twice sat on the Wizengamot: Ralston Potter, who was a member from 1612-1652, and who was a great supporter of the Statute of Secrecy (as opposed to declaring war on the Muggles, as more militant members wished to do) and Henry Potter (Harry to his intimates), who was a direct descendant of Hardwin and Iolanthe, and served on the Wizengamot from 1913 - 1921. Henry caused a minor stir when he publicly condemned then Minister for Magic, Archer Evermonde, who had forbidden the magical community to help Muggles waging the First World War. His outspokenness on the behalf of the Muggle community was also a strong contributing factor in the family’s exclusion from the ‘Sacred Twenty-Eight’.

Henry’s son was called Fleamont Potter. Fleamont was so called because it was the dying wish of Henry’s mother that he perpetuate her maiden name, which would otherwise die out. He bore the burden remarkably well; indeed, he always attributed his dexterity at duelling to the number of times he had to fight people at Hogwarts after they had made fun of his name. It was Fleamont who took the family gold and quadrupled it, by creating magical Sleekeazy’s Hair Potion ( ‘two drops tames even the most bothersome barnet’ ). He sold the company at a vast profit when he retired, but no amount of riches could compensate him or his wife Euphemia for their childlessness. They had quite given up hope of a son or daughter when, to their shock and surprise, Euphemia found that she was pregnant and their beloved boy, James, was born.

Fleamont and Euphemia lived long enough to see James marry a Muggle-born girl called Lily Evans, but not to meet their grandson, Harry. Dragon pox carried them off within days of each other, due to their advanced age, and James Potter then inherited Ignotus Peverell’s Invisibility Cloak.

Has anyone taken the patronus quiz? If so, what did you get?

Hahaha.
I ways all ready to hate on Pottermore some more.
But if Kaitlyn's patronus is a buzzard, that's too great. xD

I took it twice - now granted I've always thought my Patronus would be a red panda. There is not garuntee that could even be n answer but I always get hopeful. I mean my favorite animal is elephants so of course I would have been sooooooo happy for that. But alas I don't think I'm stoic enough to be an elephant patronus.

I took the quiz twice to test constancy and I suppose there was. Both times I was a cat - once a manx and once a ragdoll. I don't quite understand why though. I'm allergic to them, but i guess i could relate to them xD Regardless when I get my patronus tattooed I will still go with a red panda. My happiest memories are with the animals and I just feel like in my heart that would be my real patronus. Since it seems fairly random.

My patronus is an adder. I am very confused and a bit cross.

Patronuses aside (patroni?), the art direction on this quiz was just too gorgeous.

Wait ... I just realised ...

I AM SNEK

It lets you re-take the quiz? That's interesting...

It says that you can only take it once, so I'm assuming Cole used different accounts.

Ash took it more than once as well, I think. Ah, that makes sense.

I quite agree, KR. It was pretty. ^_^
My patronus is a wolf. I've always thought mine would be in the canine family.

im just mad that I'm allergic to my
Patrons XD

But yes more than one account.

So far I have done the quiz 10 times and I have never had a double up

1 - Black Swan
2 - Blackbird
3 - Erumpent (rare)
4 - Rat
5 - Robin
6 - Black Mare
7 - Sphynx Cat
8 - Dolphin
9 - Pheasant (Funniest conjure, its hilarious; Imagine scaring off dementors with this)

10 - Tortoiseshell Cat

Honestly, I wish for more consistency, I can do Pottermore and Illvermorny and get Slytherin and Thunderbird every time but I can't get the same Patronus twice.
Also I like how I only get BLACK Animals, Never a White Mare or Swan, it's a Black Swan or Black Mare (Doesn't change if I select a different colour other than black or white, it's always black)

Since even JKR's patronus was different on her second attempt, I'm not a big fan of the accuracy of the test. I've done it twelve times so far, going to reach for twenty and take the average result, but so far there's no real repeat.

I wish I could do an Average result.. On Average I'm different. You can't even go "Yes this one is more like me" Because it doesn't go into detail as to WHY this is your patronus

That's something i noticed that I didn't like. There was no description like "A cat is your patronus because cats are a$$holes. Like nope just a cat. Here ya go. And why is a ragdoll and a manx different? You know? I was hoping for something a bit more.

Grrrr I was hoping there would be this. I tried to do it on my phone but the bae graphics were too much haha! I guess I'll try it later and see.

I've done a little reading on some online forums, and here are some comments on the Patronus quiz and the results

Ive seen a lot of people sad or upset by their result (and lets be honest, its just an algorythm so why did they include salmon?!) but maybe its a chance to learn and grow.
A old acquaintance of mine was very interested in spirit animals and such, and she told me that whatever animal manifested itself, held a lesson to learn.
For example, i got a stoat which seemed weird to me, but they are scrappy. Maybe i need to learn to stand up for myself more? Be a bit more of a stoat? Read up on your animal, all animals are very interesting and might give you an idea of how to become a better person if you would be a bit more like it.

I'm not upset by my result, I'm upset that the quiz had absolutely nothing to do with personality, and most of the questions are completely irrelevant to the memory.

Exactly! I got an animal, that while I'm not opposed to, I don't see what new thing I'm supposed to learn, and I have no emotional attachment to. And no, I'm not going to gain an attachment to it just because some random weird questions told me I should.
Here is also a survey of almost two thousand people (which you can participate in) to see what the most common and least common patronuses/i are. You can look at graph results at the end and compare them to the most common of your house. I can see that about seventeen other people have received the Adder as their patronus, like me.

Yeah, a description would've been nice to be included. I bet that's for a later update and we'll be asked to redo the quiz like our sorting quizzes. :tut:

I just looked up my animal and personality traits and read up. I do think different types of cats would have similar base traits but other different traits.

Also, I do like how many options there are. I didn't expect to see animals like an Irish wolfhound or buzzard as options. :p

142 options, as far as I know. :r
I do like the variety, so we don't have every getting the same few animals, but the test isn't long enough for the variety there is. Five or six questions for one out of a hundred and forty two animals? Ehhh

Disappointed in the lack of option for a sloth patronus. :(

:o That is disappointing.

if a patronus was a direct representation of me if probs be a sloth. Also why can't you get a human patronus? Like humans are animals! Regardless I hope Cyndi is right and they add an update later and we get a chance to redo, maybe have more than six questions. At least ten!

Even if it's only 5 questions, and supposing they each have 4 possible answers (I don't know, I haven't logged in to Pottermore in ages) 4^5 = 1024 possible unique answer combinations, more than enough to group people into a mere 142 possible animal options. :p

I mean, you probably could...
Explanation: Some wizards apparently can have magical creatures as their patronus. Lots of magical creatures have humanoid forms (giants, veelas, centaurs, vampires, etc. etc. etc.). But magical creature patronus are rare, and technically even a corporeal patronus is rare, and even being able to cast the patronus charm is 'impressive.'
So the likelihood of a wizard having a human patronus is über slim.
