It was late afternoon by the time all Prim’s classes had finished for the day and she’d headed to the Wild Patch garden. She hadn’t thought much about her name before coming to Hogwarts, or even that much whilst she was here, honestly. Uncle Ben was a Professor now, and she called him that even though he was her cousin because he was older than her and it felt weird to refer to him just by his name, she supposed she could just call him Professor, but that didn’t really work for her to be honest. When she was at home, it was just a name, something she shared as part of her adopted family with her adoptive parents and her adoptive siblings. Nothing special really. Lately though, especially this year, she’d started paying a little more attention.

It had started when she’d heard the sorting in September, Kaster. She didn’t know all that many peopel outside of her immediate family because they were all sort of spread out, though they talked enough, she was surprised to see the name called out and had been surprised because she hadn’t heard there would be any Kaster’s starting school this year. She’d wondered if maybe it was a similar name, and not actually spelled the same as hers, so she hadn’t done anything about it at first. After all, she didn’t know many people outside of her immediate family with the name. It was probably a coincidence. Then she’d seen it written down on the Wild Patch Sign up sheets, and it had sparked an interest in her, she wanted to find out more.

Gloves tucked into her pocket and a smudge of dirt already on her cheek, Prim made her way towards the boy in question. It had taken her a long time to get the nerve up to approach him, and she knew she had definitely never seen him at family gatherings. She didn’t remember ever meeting anyone named Daisuke. He didn’t seem to look like anyone from her family she would immediately recognise either. “Hey,” she said, stopping beside him. She hesitated for what to say for a moment before just forging ahead. “Your name’s Kaster right? Daisuke Kaster?” Just to make sure she hadn’t stuffed it all up and this wasn’t the boy she was supposed to be approaching. “We um… have the same last name… I was wondering… well, your parents, what’re their names? If you don’t mind me asking I mean. I’m Prim, by the way, Primrose… Kaster.”

Daisuke hadn't really thought much about relatives really. His mum and dad didn't really keep much contact with either side of the family. Or more accurately, his dad didn't keep up with the Kaster side at all and his mum would only contact the Tsukino side rarely. All Daisuke knew was that there were too many Kasters, and his mum's three siblings were all adopted and they were all living separately now with only his grandparents left in Japan. Or was his uncle still there? He could never get it right. And so while their parents had warned them that there might be some family in Hogwarts New Zealand, Daisuke had never really thought of it much until now. He looked up from the plant he'd been taking care of to the girl who had approached him. He didn't quite know what to think of her but he did nod his head to confirm that he was Daisuke Kaster and then blinked when she asked about his parents. Definitely strange. "Uhm... Rafaelle... Rafaelle Kaster," he said hesitantly. He didn't think she'd recognize his mum's anyway. Wow. They really did perhaps have relatives in Hogwarts New Zealand.

Hmm, Rafaelle Kaster… she didn’t know that name off the top of her head and now she felt a little silly. Still, Uncle Ben was around so maybe he would be able to shed some light onto the situation. She definitely didn’t recall hearing the name Rafaelle at any of the family dinners, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t still a relative, she knew that the Kaster family were quite a big one and even though she was not related to them biologically, it never seemed to make much of a difference to them. Sam’s parents treated her the same as they treated all of the grandchildren, and that often did make her feel special actually. “Oh… I don’t know that name off the top of my head, but… the Kaster’s are a really big family so you could be an offshoot branch. I was adopted by Samual and Willow Kaster, and we have a cousin here, Ben, but I call him Uncle Ben because he’s way older," and honestly it was just respectful, she thought. ”I also have a brother Forrest, he's in our year and Iris is graduated. I don’t mean to throw all of this on you… I was just curious and I guess I thought you might be too?“ If he wanted to meet Ben, she was sure he would be amenable to it. Ben was into that sort of thing she was pretty sure, he liked to analyse bits of their family. She was also sure he had a family tree, taken over from Uncle Jack.

Daisuke didn't know why but his face had fallen slightly when the girl - Prim - told him that she didn't recognize his father's name. "Oh," he said lamely which was just awful because it wasn't like he knew any of the names she'd just spouted. In fact, he was much worse off than he was because he didn't know any other Kaster names aside from his own family's and well... hers now. At least she had an Uncle Ben she knew of. And probably a couple more. "I...I don't know them, I'm sorry," he said as he fidgeted just a little. Was it impolite to not know any of the Kasters? It probably was. And it was way worse because he hadn't even paid enough attention to know that there were Kasters in the school in the first place despite his parents' warning. "Mum and Dad," he paused as he tried to figure out the nicest way to explain why he never knew of this entire family that existed for him. "They don't talk about their families much," he said softly. And if Daisuke was honest, he'd never cared enough to know either. He already had his hands full dealing with Hachiro. He didn't need more cousins niggling him. "I... have a brother too," he almost whispered. Daisuke didn't actually want to tell her because she'd been nice enough to him so far and he didn't know if that would change should she meet Hachiro. Maybe she'd take Hachiro's side and think that Daisuke really was utterly boring and just generally worth picking on. But he would have felt awful because she'd just told him about her brother so clearly, he now had to tell her about his. "In Slytherin," he said offhandedly and hopefully not as anxious as he actually felt.

Prim shifted on her feet feeling a bit more than a little guilty when Daisuke’s face fell. She didn’t mean to make him feel bad, she was just curious about this new family she’d found herself adopted into. She supposed she could have been a bit more tactful about it though, she was certainly not the most tactful of people that was true. She tugged at the sleeves of her jumper and offered him a small apologetic smile that she hoped he would accept, though she wouldn’t have expected him to out of his own. “That’s okay,” she said gently, giving him another small grin. “I mean… I didn’t really know either. I only noticed ‘cause of the sign-up sheet, and I guess I got a bit excited. It’s kind of nice thinking there might be more family around, even if we don’t really know each other yet.”

She brushed some of her hair out of her face, behind her ear, and reached out to pat him on his shoulder. “And you don’t have to be sorry. Families are weird sometimes. You don’t have to know everything about them to still be part of it.” She would know, she didn’t know much at all about her biological family, but she still considered herself to be a part of them, and she didn’t know everything about her adoptive family, but she was still part of them. “Anyway, I’m glad I came to say hi. Even if we don’t figure it all out today, it’s nice to meet you, Daisuke.” She smiled, and gave him a bit of a shy wave, before she stepped back to give him some space. “I’ll see you around the gardens, yeah?” She added, before heading away from him, she would give him a bit of space to process before she overwhelmed him again.
