I'll keep this brief because there's really not much to say, but -
Who would be interested in their characters playing an IC game of D&D

Definitely the next. I mean, of course its not going to be a super in-depth, actual game of DnD, because that would take months, but there'd be a general overview I suppose

There's a Dungeon Master who sets the scene and the storyline, and the players make a character and say what they want to do and try save the day.
So say Archie Renner made an elven archer who will have a character sheet with a certain amount of hit points and things, and they'd just roll and generate a random number to be successful or fail in their endeavors
I don't know how well it'd work out, but I don't think it'll be too hard. It's super easy and it's not as intense as the real thing.

How does no one know how to play
It's PvE, there's usually about 5-6+ heroes who work together to complete a quest
Though not every character has to be good, and they can work against each other, but it generally doesn't happen because you all need each other
