Jake entered the courtyard without a purpose, he had no idea why he had even bothered to be there really. It was a sunny day and birds were chirping. One might say that it was the perfect day for going out and enjoying what nature had in store. Jake didn't think like that in the tiniest bit, he just didn't have much of an idea to why he was actually there. It might've been the fact that many other students were out in the courtyard and he might have a chance of making a new friend. Jake did want another friend to spend some time with. He only had a few friends and making more wouldn't do him any harm. Jake hadn't really made much effort in trying to find out why he had decided to go there that day, or go outside at all for that matter. If he did, then it would probably be the simplest answer and making a new friend seemed like the easiest and most simple answer possible. It didn't matter much to him although he did know that the day felt like it would be a good one for another reason he didn't know. Jake breathed out slowly before going on to find a place to sit and kill some time, it was an attempt to relax himself, he didn't feel anxious at all but it would never hurt to try just in that slight case he would start to panic and lose the calm exterior he had. Since he had made so much effort in trying to lose the anxiety he had gotten so used to, Jake didn't want to be anxious at all that day. Even if it seemed far out of reach with all the other people in the courtyard. Jake didn't really understand but he felt like they were all looking at him. But they obviously weren't.

As Jake started to walk into the courtyard, he noticed all the groups of friends around him, they were all talking and laughing to themselves. Something in which Jake didn't do much and only done a few times in his life due to his social awkwardness and tendency to become anxious. Either way, Jake couldn't help but feel a little lonely and want a friend to talk to when he saw all of the other students having fun with their friends. He did try to ignore this feeling, he hid it beneath a smile, making sure that he looked friendly and approachable, in the instance that somebody might want to talk to him. Jake needed a place to sit where somebody could sit with him, when he took a look around he couldn't find a free bench to sit at. Jake sighed at this and gave up on all efforts to find somewhere social to sit and look like he was a nice person. He walked over to a nearby tree and sat underneath it in the shade of the branches, the grass was soft and Jake liked how comfortable it was. Being in some sort of darkness was comforting to him, he had always loved darkness and anything close to it. He had known for a long time that being in the darkness was something he was drawn to and something he admired. It was because of how mysterious and sinister it had always been. Jake smirked ever so subtly and closed his eyes before he leant against the tree, he didn't really know what to do after that so he let his mind wonder and let his over active imagination take over his mind until he had something else to do.

Charlotte had a lot of things to be doing so early in the day. She had to reply to a letter written to her by her parents. She had to be sure that she was on top of all her work and not as behind as she really believed herself to be. She had to fix her hair and put on a little make up. She had to find her friends, and tell them of the plans she had for her birthday. She'd be turning 13, finally a teenager. At long last it seemed, but while inwardly she was pretty much rejoicing, her mind set did remind her that she would need, to think ahead to the future and start presenting herself as a young woman, rather than a child. It was the requirement of all girls her age. Up until they reached the age of 18, when they were presented to society. It would be the biggest event in Charlotte's life. It would be the event that would help define her adult life. She was glad that at least she would not be at school when the day came. She knew that it would be just after she'd left school, which was always a good thing. Getting out of school was not something that the Hufflepuff girl enjoyed. She was already very much behind the others, and going away from more family events were not something that would not help her catch up. It didn't matter if she was actually a year or more behind, she knew in her heart, she'd catch up, because a hufflepuff never gave up and that was what she was. Obviously, Charlotte was very much aware that she had a lot of work to do already and it wasn't being done quickly, but it was being done. Slowly but surely. And it would all be completed and they would have nothing to ever worry about when it came to Charlotte. Just she had a lot of family issues to deal with, issues that without her control were the ones that dragged her away from school. it was unfortunate that she did have so many family problems, but in the grand scheme of things, Charlotte would not complain about the life she lead.

After spending a good two hours getting ready, Charlotte felt she was presentable for the others in the school. She had already gotten dressed, in her uniform and her hair was now neat and straight. It was every so often, that the hufflepuff wore her hair straight. This was one of these days. It was sunny and a little breeze blew in the air, but, her straight hair was one that withstood a breeze. She was on the courtyard, with a book under her arm, looking for a place to sit. The place was busy and she wasn't interest in interrupting the conversations of the many people around her. She was looking for a spare bench, or even just a person around her age, that wasn't too busy that could tolerate a Hufflepuff beside them. Charlotte wasn't too house focused, but being brought up in a place where social status matter, she understood the importance. Charlotte herself was a half blood. Only her mother was actually magical, and her mother was actually french. Charlotte's roots were British primarily, her mother was distantly English. Not to mention she was pretty high up in the french social status as well. Her cousin, Florence, was the French equivalent of her. It was a pity that she hadn't come to hogwarts, but at the same time, it was something that Charlotte could understand. Beauxbatons was closer to home, and her cousin wasn't the type to leave home very often. but still, she knew that if she had her cousin things at hogwarts would be a lot simpler. Charlotte noticed that there was a boy sitting under a tree alone. She hoped he wouldn't mind, but noticing that there wasn't anywhere else to sit, Charlotte walked over. She cleared her throat just as she reached the boy. "Excuse me" Charlotte nervously said. She waited till the boy had noticed her, before curtsying and speaking again. "Would you mind if I sat with you?"

Sitting in the shade of the tree was relaxing for Jake, in fact, he actually loved it. He was relaxed and for Jake this was hard to come by, his anxiety would usually be getting the best of him by now. But that day it wasn't. There was something about that day, wether it was the weather or the atmosphere that the courtyard had, Jake didn't know. He just knew that he was having a good day so far and he thought that nothing was going to ruin it. He hoped that nothing was going to ruin it. Jake sighed as the birds chirped in tree above him, the day was young and bright, one would say it was a perfect day, a day where anything could happen and all you were able to do was smile at nothing. Jake didn't feel quite like that. He felt calm and relaxed, but not as happy as the day seemed to be, Jake was never usually happy. In fact, it was an emotion he could only feel under rare circumstances. His friends made him feel good, obviously. They gave him confidence, enough confidence to sit under a tree in a courtyard and think about anything he wanted and not worry about who might make fun of him for it in the common room later on. This was a trait of his, it could be a good one or a bad one. It could make him more confident and cheerful to be around which is what it was doing now but it could also make him act negatively, some would say evil. If he didn't have friends to make him feel confident at all. Luckily for Jake, it was making him be somewhat happy, as happy as one could be if their grandmother had just died and had nobody who understood to talk to. Which in fact was a whole lot better than he had been the day before.

Jake opened his eyes when he heard somebody say something, it sounded like it was in his direction and when he looked up to see a girl standing near him and looking at him, Jake smiled. He didn't really know why he smiled. It was unusual for him to smile at somebody he didn't know and somebody he hadn't said anything to yet. Jake nodded at the girl "No, I wouldn't mind at all. Go ahead." Jake said as he politely indicated for her to sit next to him. He was glad that the girl had approached him and talked to him, he felt a sense of accomplishment that he was talking to somebody, usually he would have to talk to them first or ignore them completely. He was relieved and glad that he had somebody to talk to and get to know. He looked at his feet, not quite knowing what to do next and bit his lip, this was a habit of his. One that he wanted to get rid of, he had been failing at it so far, what else could he do if he was in a social situation and didn't know what to do next? He could ask her a question, he could even say something witty to break the ice, it was just a shame that Jake couldn't possibly think of anything charming and amusing to say. So he decided to ask the girl her name "What's your name?" Jake asked, still looking at his feet. He then looked up and out into the distance and stated a short and simple "My name's Jake." He smirked to himself, as he continued to look into the distance, he wasn't going too look at the girl until he knew her name. He thought that it would be awkward to look at her and talk without knowing something as mandatory as her name. He waited for her reply as he bit the inside of his cheek, he was hoping that he didn't look rude but one can't guess these things.

A smile crept on the Hufflepuff's face. As much as she didn't mind being alone, she wasn't exactly great when it came to rejection. She didn't like being said no to. Obviously as the daughter of a lord, she knew how to act when it came to someone saying no to her sitting with them. She was courteous and she didn't act as if the greatest mistake had been made. She understood that people didn't want to always be around others, this was just the kind of place that they all lived, however knowing that the boy did want some company pleased the Hufflepuff, since she didn't have to look for another place to sit that would be both embarrassing and awkward. She was able to just take a seat and be able to relax for at least a few minutes. She took a seat next to the boy and wasn't quite sure what else to do, so instead of being the first to engage in some form of conversation, Charlotte spent a little time fixing her hair. She was worried that it wouldn't look perfect and that the boy would think less of her. She hardly wanted to make a bad impression so early on in whatever this would become. Sure, it was still very early and the boy didn't look like the type too bothered by how others looked, not strictly speaking girls, but it wasn't like Charlotte was going to assume anything about this boy, she hardly wanted to be proved wrong. It wasn't the nature of the Hufflepuff to make a bad impression she, was the type to leave a lasting impression, whether good or bad it didn't matter. She was overly polite and she tried overly hard to impress people, if this showed or didn't kept her fresh in the minds of others. It wasn't like she set out to be remembered, but it was hard to forget a girl with the single most English accent at the school, and the constant need to be leaving for family events. It was the life of the girl, splitting her life between the important magical education and the home life she had to lead being the daughter of a lord.

The oddly coloured eyes of the girl followed the path of an over hanging cloud in the sky. She smiled slightly, and then hearing the boy speak looked down at him. He asked her name. She smiled slightly, now was the task on how to say her name, whether it was the full name or if it was just to be a little of the name. Either way, she'd be stuck having to say her name. And either she'd get it too polite or just right. A small sigh could not help but escape the girl's lips as the boy was first to give his name. Jake, a simple and nice name. Charlotte knew that no matter how she acted now, she would come off as polite. But, old ways were difficult to shift. She stood up and faced the boy slightly. "Charlotte" Charlotte curtsied, as she said her name. Once she'd said her name she sat down again and hoped that she hadn't scared the boy. She hardly wanted to do that. "It's a pleasure to meet you Jake." Charlotte wondered if she wasn't scaring him by how polite she acted. It deterred some people and made others curious about her. There was nothing that really made Charlotte curious. Not when it came to people, she'd been brought up to not touch other people's history and future. Charlotte knew that friendship was about honesty from both sides, as well as questions, but, Charlotte wasn't exactly either of those things. She had to not always be completely honest. Because family matters were not meant to be talked off in any situation. Another one of the ridiculous rules Charlotte lived by. "It's a beautiful day." Charlotte said not sure of what else to say. She wasn't sure how to start this conversation. Charlotte wasn't great at starting conversations. All she could really do, was make an attempt at carrying them on.

Now that Jake had somebody to talk to and possibly get to know, he smiled, not at anything in particular really, he was just smiling in general. This wasn't a usual feature of the second year, to smile at nothing, and smile genuinely at that. Hiding pain behind a smile had always been easy for him, yet so hard. Nobody knew about his past and what had happened at all, he had been able to hide it so easily he wouldn't be surprised if nobody had guessed he had any pain at all. Maybe he was a Slytherin because of that, maybe the Sorting hat had thought he was best put in Slytherin, after reading his mind. Maybe it wasn't his thoughts and actions while he was at home. Jake shook his head, he shouldn't be thinking this, he had a conversation to focus on, a conversation with a girl that he just curtsied and sat down. Jake thought it was cute, how formal she was being, she was only talking to him, a Second year Slytherin kid with a hell of a lot to hide. Although, she wouldn't know anything about that, and Jake was relieved that she didn't. If anybody knew, being chased out of school would be his destiny, or being shunned at least. Jake needed to focus on the situation at hand, the simple situation in where he had just introduced himself to a girl and she had introduced herself back. Plus, now that she had made a comment on the beautiful day they were both in was, Jake needed to say something back as to stop any awkward silence that might commence if he didn't say anything. "It is, I am glad that I went outside today. I hardly ever go out in the sun like this." Jake said casually. Being casual was just as easy as smiling was for him now, when he had started Wizarding School he was a different person completely, on the outside at least, he was antisocial and didn't have any friends, but now that he had them, he was more confident. If only they knew the real him.

Now that he had said something to Charlotte, he needed to ask her a question, something that was normal but something that wasn't too personal. He had noticed that she had an accent before, it was obviously an English accent, seeing as he was from England himself he was able to notice where her accent was from instantly. He didn't have much of an accent anymore, he had been living in New Zealand for five years now, with annual trips home to London every year for Christmas. He could tell that she was from England but he wasn't able to tell exactly where in England she was from, this brought on his next question. "Where in England are you from charlotte? I'm from England myself, I but can't quite put my finger on where you are from in England." Jake said as he looked at her, now he could actually look at her without it being awkward for him, now that he knew her name. He was being honest, it was a trait that plagued the Slytherin frequently, he would answer pretty much any question honestly that happened to be thrown at him, except the questions that delved too deep into his past and into his mind. This casual conversation was a little unusual for the second year, as Charlotte was being very polite, he thought it was sweet, but he also thought that it was weird the way she was so formal. He was an informal person and mocked people that were formal. Well, it wasn't as much mocking as it was making a joke. He wasn't about to mock Charlotte though, he had no reason to, and she was kind and seemed a little shy. There was nothing he could mock about her. Even if he wanted to. That's why Jake was being nice, because she was nice, and hadn't made any rude comments about him yet. Jake continued to smile at her and waited for her to answer is question, while he sat in the shade of the tree, which was shadowing his face from the sunlight. It was unusual how much Jake suited the darkness.
