First Years, Lesson One

Landon was very excited for his first Herbology lesson with his new first years. He was confident that he was going to have fun with them and would try his best to make the year as good as possible for them.

The Professor stood at the front of the Herbology greenhouse with a beaming smile on his face as he looked around the room, waiting for his new batch of first years to arrive. The greenhouse was decorated with still pictures of muggle plants, from daisies to tulips to orange jessamine. They wouldn't be learning much about them, but he still felt that the plants were pretty and that it gave the atmosphere a homely feel. He was sure that the muggle-born students like himself were going to like the interesting touch too and he hoped that it would make them feel comfortable during their first lesson with him.

Soon enough, the first group of students entered the greenhouse followed by more and more people which just made the man even more excited for the lesson. "Come in, come in!" Landon exclaimed as he gestured for a couple of hesitating children standing at the door to make their way inside.

Once everyone was settled Professor Carter began pacing the room in his best attempt to make himself comfortable. "Good afternoon first years, I am Professor Carter and I will be your Herbology professor for your first to fourth year." He said, his voice quite loud and clear around the greenhouse. "Now, can anyone tell me what Herbology is?" Landon pointed to a student in the front row and smiled at them. When they managed to get the answer right, Professor Carter beamed. "3 points to your house! Herbology is the study, along with the use, of both magical and mundane plants. The way muggles look after them are much similar to the way wizards look after them, but with obviously some magic involved." The man paused as he looked around at his students, some of which were writing notes already. Many of them were listening intently, which made Professor Carter smile. "But don't be too worried about all of that just yet. For now, I will be handing around pieces of paper and a pencil with a little introductory quiz on it. Luckily, it will only be one of your few assignments this year. I look forward to teaching you all." Landon handed each person in his class a single piece of paper and a pencil before dismissing them. Parchment was too overrated, and his students would be seeing none of that in his classes.

Ruby thought it was cool that her head of house also taught Herbology and that it was nice to see a familiar face in the classroom which gave her more confidence. She raised her hand to answer the question, "The study of plants" she was pleased she got it right and got some house points. She listened for the rest of the lesson then left the classroom when dismissed.

Freddie couldn't decide if he was nervous or excited. On the one hand, he was desperate to start learning a bit of magic, but on the other, that meant meeting a dozen new professors, some of which he was bound to clash with. He'd heard good things about Professor Carter, but that only made Freddie feel slightly better as he stepped inside the greenhouse. Oh. It was cosy. And there were tables in the middle he could stand at, if he wanted to. Freddie stood there, looking at the pictures of flowers, while the professor introduced himself. Yeah. This was probably going to be his favourite class, actually. Maybe.

Juniper was more excited for her first Herbology lesson than she was for any of the other lessons she had and the reason for that was very simple; she loved plants. Matter of fact she loved the world around her and everything it had to offer so as she arrived to the classroom she gave a soft smile to her Head of House and Herbology Professor. She took a seat, eyeing her fellow classmates nervously. As the Professor began his speech Juniper listened carefully, taking a curious peek at the space around them. She made sure to fill in her quiz before handing it in on her way out. "Thank you for the lesson Professor." She said quietly before leaving.

It was strange to be experiencing life at school without her siblings, even more so because they were both in Gryffindor and would get to do everything together. Mama had said she should try to focus on finding her own pleasures while at school though, that Rouge and Blanc would be fine without her (a likely story) and that Rose shouldn't have to worry about others. But that what was she did, wasnt it? Who was she if not the person that stopped others getting hurt, lost or miserable?

As she stepped into the Greenhouse she had to admit if she were anywhere else other than Gryffindor, she was glad it was Ravenclaw. If not because at least she could spend some time looking at the cool boy from the train. She admired his attitude, and he seemed refreshingly mature in comparison to her brother. She sat in the class at an angle she could glance across to Freddie whenever she pleased, but made sure to pay attention to the professor and took some notes, too.

January was excited for herbology. She had grown up on a farm growing all kinds of things, but she actually didn't know all that much about plants. She took her seat and smiled and Professor Carter. Her head of house seemed nice and was sure he was a good teacher too. The lesson was fairly simple as they went over the basics and she took notes. She took the parchment as it was handed out and filled in the answers quickly. The lesson was short but she was looking forward to the rest of the semester.

The first classes were so far the kind of classes people who didn’t have to worry about their grades tended to skip - or they went the other direction and went because it was an easy lesson. Marina wasn’t sure which of the two made more sense, but she didn’t skip lessons. So when she slipped into the greenhouse a little late after having to jog all the way down those steps from the Ravenclaw tower, she was already a little annoyed. She tried to blend in, not letting the professor know she was late as she hid behind her hand to come and stand near her roommate. She didn’t speak to most of them yet, but she would rather spend the class with someone she kind of knew, rather than with no one she knew. She went to answer the question, but A Hufflepuff across the way answered first and she wrote down the answer in her notes before the class ended. She was going to aim to be more on time later.

The first herbology lesson was also here. Priyanka knew a little about plants, because she had learned a little from her grandmother, but not too much, because she didn't want to pretend to be too wise. Therefore, it was better to learn everything herself, if she needed help, she could ask the professor or her grandmother. She settled in the classroom to find out from the professor what was expected this year. In her notes, she wrote down everything the professor said and then gave them a little task to complete. By the end of the lesson, she completed it, thinking about her answers, then when she was done, she took it to the professor, said goodbye and left the classroom.

Jun didn't know if he liked plants. He just didn't have a solid opinion on them. He entered the greenhouse and took a spot near Priyanka. The professor seemed enthusiastic on the topic at least. The room had a pleasant atmosphere too, but it was a bit warm. Jun tugged at his sweater slightly. Maybe he should've worn something different. Small quizzes were given out and Jun took hold of one to fill it out. It didn't take long, and then the lesson seemingly came to a close. Maybe they didn't do much in the first lessons but Jun hoped it'd mostly be lectures. Though part of him knew that was wishful thinking.

Herbology had been one of the subjects that Eloise had been looking forward to the most. The Hufflepuff had a huge interest in plants and all things of that nature. The Hufflepuff got dressed and ready, looking through her collection of different themed earrings before deciding to go with the chocolate earrings. She then quickly packed the things she needed for the lesson before skipping happily towards the herbology greenhouse. Once she arrived, she took the nearest spot that was available before taking out the things she needed for the lesson.

Eloise moved her attention towards the professor as he started off with the lesson. The Hufflepuff had put up her hand at the professor's question but hadn't been picked to answer, which Eloise didn't mind. She was happy that it had been her roommate who had answered. Eloise made sure to take as many notes as possible, as she didn't want to miss out on anything important. The Hufflepuff nodded her head throughout the lesson, showing the professor that she had understood the content that was being given to them.

They were then given a small quiz to do, which Eloise didn't mind answering. The Hufflepuff made sure to answer the questions as quickly as possible. It wasn't long until the lesson had come to an end, and they were dismissed. Eloise made sure to hand over her quiz before quickly packing up her things and tidying up her area. She then says a quick and appreciative thanks and goodbye to the professor before heading out of the classroom with her friends and the rest of her classmates.
