Hello everybody!
The Yule Ball has just been closed - which means soon enough Holiday forums will close once more and Year 11 of Hogwarts New Zealand will recommence.
However, Semester 2 brings with it a new addition to the board - a change which has been implemented with the closure of the Yule Ball and will continue on (so long as it finds success). The site staff have discussed it, then I got it coded as quickly as possible to have it implemented for this Yule Ball (with some artistic help from Sir Kaitlyn).
"What is this awesome change?!" You ask? Simply: badges.
Badges on HNZ are visible on a character's inventory page. They are awarded for participation in various events (major school events, side wide plots, and possibly more areas as the system is hammered out more precisely). Their purpose is to encourage participation in these major events, something which has been noted as lacking in the past.
Each event big enough for a badge (which will include, on a regular basis, the Halloween feast, Yule Ball, possible valentines events, etc. and on an irregular basis major Death Eater attacks and their reactions, orchestrated Ministry events, etc.) will have its own special image created and awarded to the participant character's pages. This will help people keep track of who was where when, as well, as make a pretty collection of reminders of good times had on HNZ.
Every badge will be unique and will never be reused, so only those people who took part in specific things at specific times (when the opportunities arose) will have those images.
As I said, the first badges were given out for participants of this Yule Ball - approximately 31 characters in all. For the sake of example, see Professor Cyndi Weasley's Inventory.
For information on badges, and an archive of which badges have been awarded for what events, please see our new Badge Information Documentation (which has been added to the site docs page).
I have seen/heard of this done in other communities (roleplaying communities, too) and I think it will be a great motivator for some members to join in on mass events (even when their character might not be the focus) as well as an awesome way for members who take part any way to be rewarded for their dedication and collect a bunch of special images unique to their character's situation.
If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ask them here.
I hope you are excited as we are (or maybe just as I am?) about this.
~Nick
