Second Years, Lesson Six

As the class walked in, Landon gave them a bright smile before greeting them, "Welcome everyone! Your mandrakes will all be fully grown by now! I came in last night to feed and water them and caught them trying to move into each other's pots." He chuckled. "Today will be your last lesson with them, so make sure to say your goodbyes." The man let out a small sigh as he looked over the faces of his second years. Some of them looked very sad at the thought of leaving them after they had been taking care of them all semester and it made Landon feel sad too. He tried to brighten the mood. "It's alright guys. These Mandrakes will hopefully be used to save some people lives in the future, so there's no need to worry!

"Today we'll be repotting the Mandrakes before they are sent off to St Mungo's. Put on your dragon hide gloves and work robes, and ladies if you need to tie back your hair, I have extra ribbons laid out by the earmuffs." He put his earmuffs around his neck. "This will be very much like when you first repotted your Mandrakes. Except now, they're all a lot stronger and they won't want to be repotted. You will have to use a lot of force, but make sure to be gentle with them too. I'll demonstrate with my mandrake and then you may begin." He put on his gloves, then said sternly. "You will all have to wear your earmuffs. As an added measure of safety, I have placed a silencing charm on all of your Mandrakes. Put your earmuffs on now please." He waited for them to do so, then pulled up his earmuffs.

Professor Carter grasped the leaves base firmly, tugged upwards with a steady, hard pressure then with a slight pop, his mandrake came out of his pot. He wrestled, kicked, tried to bite and it took Landon ten minutes to get him into the larger pot of soil. He quickly put the soil around his head until only his leaves were visible. Once the man was done, he waited for his student to get theirs repotted.

It was a hard process and took some time. Once they were done and their tools were put away and the Mandrakes were fed, watered, and in the sunlight, he spoke. "Good job today guys. I know it was hard, but I'm proud of you all for completing this last task. This was a crucial part of your lesson over Mandrakes in Herbology. If any of you plan on pursuing a career in the medical field, you will need to get used to doing stuff like this. Unfortunately, you will also need to learn how to chop them up which is always a horrible process." Landon was glad that he didn't make his students chop up the mandrakes this time as it meant that they could be spared the pain of doing so. "You may now be dismissed now that we are done with our mandrakes. Make sure to study for your exam. I wish you all the best!"

Assignment: Post attendance. Good luck in the exams!

Tugging on his earmuffs, Eli could see that some of his classmates were a little sad about this, and he glanced over to Jonah to see how he was feeling. He couldn’t really tell so he suspected that Jonah was trying not to think about the fate of the thing. Eli mostly considering them annoying, but he supposed they’d all gotten a little attached to them over the semester. he shot one last look at Thorn’s leafy head before gripping the mandrake’s leaves. “Come on Thorn,” he was resisting, Eli had to pull harder. He gritted his teeth and dropped it into another pot, patting him down and doing the necessary last steps. “You were a menace… but I guess you weren’t the worst.” he admitted begrudging.

Prim’s heart sank a little as Professor Carter mentioned the mandrakes they’d been working on this semester would be leaving. She knew it was coming, she did, but that didn’t make her any less sad. She wandered what kind of plants they would be working on next year, and was excited, but she’ enjoyed getting to know Grumbletta, and wondered if the plant knew what was in store for her. She hoped not (and she doubted it because she didn’t think mandrakes were actually that aware) and so she sighed as she put on her gloves and earmuffs. She was trying not to think about it, but it was hard when she knew the outcome. The mandrake fought, unsurprisinly, but once she was securely in her new pot, Prom sighed with relief. “By Grumble,” she said softly, because this was the end for her, sadly.

Daiki had really enjoyed looking after Carrie his mandrake. He was sad to see it go. He got to the class and took his spot, with his gloves on and his work robes. He nodded at the instruction and then watched the professor demonstrate it before they were allowed to do it. He did as he was supposed to and then said goodbye to the mandrake as he repotted it and then it was done, gone. To be used for good things. He packed up his things at the end of the lesson and then headed out, feeling somber.

It was the last lesson of Herbology and Lilith was as suspicious as ever of what happened to their Mandrakes now. As she watched Morso she felt her heart drop at the mention of them saving lives. So essentially they'd grown them up for slaughter, that seemed rather depressing. Putting on her earmuffs and gloves Lilith began the repotting process. She pursed her lips together trying not to think too much about the fact that this was the last time she'd see the roots now even uglier face, she'd grown it from a small seedling to this and now she was just to let her go? That was cruel, she was now attached. "Alright Morso, settle down it'll be okay..." The second year spoke to her plant as it fought not wanting to go to its new pot. Once she was done Lilith looked at the plant in its new pot, feeling anxious about its future or maybe even lack there of, at least in the way she'd began to know the root. "Well we had some fun, yeah? I fed you and played with you and I swear you even grew to like me. This'll be it for us but thank you for letting me take care of you and thank you for teaching me how to care for a mandrake." Her voice was filled with sadness as she spoke her goodbyes to the plant. Maybe it was silly to get attached to a plant but could they really blame her? She spent weeks caring for it.
