Professor Styx led the two contestants to the stage, appointing them into the north or south part of the stage. He informed them of the rules, the points, and made sure they were aware of what not to do. He instructed, "Begin."

The duel begins now. You have 24 hours to post, or face disqualification. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun! Be creative!

Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels. Duelers cannot cast spells at the spectators or face disqualification.

Hinata was very very very nervous. She’d never done anything like this before but Kael had reminded her that if she really was serious about her career option then she must gain experience. So he’d practiced with her and now it was time for her to test her skills with other people. People watching were unnerving though. But she had no time to think about that, at all. As soon as the professor signalled to begin she cast the Conjuctivitis Curse.

Santiago didn't care that much about the duelling tournament, but it was one of the more interesting school sanctioned events. He'd also be lying if he wasn't hoping to get a chance to humble June again. He took his position and bowed, not particularly intimidated by the girl in front of him. But she was quick and got off a spell first. He cast the shield charm and sent back another. "Confundo!"

Hinata wished that people would just stop watching the tournament. It was very very very unnerving and she really should have been paying more attention to her opponent rather than being distracted by just how many people were watching. She moved too late to dodge the spell and utterly forgot to get a shield charm up. Merlin Horror and Terror were going to kill her. Mikael wouldn’t even leave a body after this. And then she was hit by the Confundus.

Hinata was very very confused why she was here but her classmate had a wand pointed at her and she had a wand pointed at him. Did she fall asleep mid-class? Is Professor Styx substituting for Professor Cade today? What was happening? Still. She was not going to admit that she was not paying attention to the lesson. So she just waited for what the Gryffindor was going to do and she’ll just ride with it.

Santiago was surprised when his spell hit. She had hardly seemed like she tried to avoid the spell at all. But as she stood, still with her wand raised he spared a glance to the proctor. Professor Styx wasn't about to the call the duel it seemed to he kept going but wasn't about to do anything too dramatic. "Expelliarmus!" he cast, hoping to end this quickly and easily.

Hinata yelped when her classmate cast a spell at her. And she had to quickly yell out “Protego!” Thankfully, the hastily made shield held and she breathed a sigh of relief. Were they reviewing first year spells? That made sense. They’d be taking OWLs soon anyway so it was probably best to review the foundations. How many times were they supposed to do this though? “Expelliarmus!” Well, she would just follow her classmate’s lead.

Santiago raised an eyebrow when she was able to block his spell. He was even more surprised when she fired one back. But wasn't too surprised and was able to block it with a shield charm of his own. Part of him felt bad flinging spells at her. But not enough to loose. He just wasn't going to try and set her on fire or anything."Obscuro!" he cast instead.

Hinata has no idea what was going on because the next spell was most definitely not a First Year spell. It wasn’t even a spell that was taught yet as far as she knew. And class or not she was not going to be experimented on by a classmate on an unknown spell. She could almost hear Kael yelling DODGE so she throws herself to the side quickly and rolling into a crouch quickly - thank Merlin for gymnastics - but she needs time to figure out what in Merlin’s name was going on so she cast the first spell that came to mind and yelled out in a panic “INCENDIO!” Oh. Oops.

Santiago smirked a little as the girl had to dodge out of the way of his spell. But it was quickly gone when she shot fire back at him. He cast a shield charm of his own and was tempted to return fire in kind but he pulled his punch in the end. "Silencio!"

Hina was honestly relieved when he used a shield against her spell. She didn't mean to shoot fire at him even if it was well-deserved after attempting to use her as a guinea pig of all things. They didn't know each other that well. And then he was shooting another spell at her which she managed to get a shield up just in time. And she still had no idea what they were supposed to be doing for class. "Are we supposed to just throw any spell?" There was probably no harm asking at this point with how much she'd already embarrassed herself.

Santiago stood there baffled as she questioned them. Obviously his previous spell really had done it's job."Umm, yeah that's how duels work. Expelliarmus!" he said dryly before firing off another spell to hopefully end this.

Ooooohhhhh. They were duelling. That makes more sense. Well. No. She already knew they were duelling? She just didn't know why? Or wait weren't they in class? "Ohh why are - Protego! - you need to just... You know what - stupefy!" Why couldn't he be helpful and just answer questions first instead of throwing spells around? She couldn't believe that she was thinking Horror was nicer.

Finally they were getting to the point and Santiago was ready with his wand raised as she fired off a spell. He cast a shield charm before sending back another spell. "Rictusempra!"

Hinata did not think this was amusing and she was hardly about to let herself get hit by a laughing spell considering how she felt about all this. It was getting easier to shield at least the longer they fought. “Reducto!”
