Seren walked hand-in-hand with her best friend Faith through the huge wooden doors that led to the Great Hall, past hundreds of older-looking students murmuring excitedly to each other on long, grand tables. They appeared to be eyeing her group. Seren felt a tinge of embarrassment about feeling new and inexperienced.
Seren, having been born to muggle parents, decided to focus her gaze at the peculiar things in front of her. Some she had seen in Diagon Alley, of course, and had started to look familiar to her—but some, like the bewitched clear ceiling that mimics the sky, demanded her attention.
Faith, being a full-blooded witch from a long line of professors of different magical schools, had already seen the wonders of Hogwarts from generations’ worth of photo albums. Feeling right at home, she didn’t feel the need to look around.
There was one thing that she was looking forward to see at Hogwarts though. Faith scanned the line of students under the large yellow banner on the ceiling, decorated by an emblem with a badger. Nearing the long table where the professors’ table, finally, her eyes caught those of her older brother’s who had on the proudest smile on his face. Faith couldn’t help but mimic it.
She was finally here with her brother.
Beside her, Seren studied as many people as she could. Some of these people had always known that they could do magic, just like the owner of the hands interlocked with hers. Some, like Faith, had been exposed to magic since birth and had probably known every useful thing that they could do with it. Some, like everyone seated at the hall, had already known so much more about magic than she did.
While the thought frightened her, Seren already had an approach in mind. First, she would stick to the most knowledgable students and squeeze all information that she could get from them. She would make sure to catch up to them to eliminate her disadvantage. Then, she would absorb more lessons than anyone ever could. During that process, people would recognize her as the smartest and most charming student at Hogwarts. And then she would rule the school. And then she would rule the world.
Seren hopped in anticipation at the genius plan forming in her mind. Faith glanced at her with an amused look on her face, and then back to the row of students under a bright yellow banner. Seren peeked over Faith’s shoulders and caught a glimpse of Ethan before the group of freshmen halted, nearly bumping heads with the boy in front of her.
Seren couldn’t tell if the tug in her heart was due to almost falling on her face in front of all those people… or if it was from catching Ethan’s eyes.
Finally, a professor stepped forward and introduced herself as Headmistress Katherine Alicastell. As she said her speech and noted the dangers of the Forbidden Forest, Seren wondered if the headmistress would be impressed by her cunning mind. Surely, the smartest and most influential professors would be teaching at Hogwarts, as she heard it from Faith to be the best magic school there is.
She listened with determination at the singing hat on the stool.
Ravenclaw would be the most ideal choice for her, she thought, but Gryffindor sounds like the house in which the most powerful come from. She was definitely hard-working, but did she care about fair-play?
Before Seren could start to wonder about Slytherin, she was called to attention when the professor started to call names.
Faith Alexander was called third. She squeezed Seren’s hand in excitement, hopped on the stool, gave Seren a wink, and shuddered as the hat was placed on her head. It only took a few seconds until the hat announced, “Hufflepuff!”
The students under the yellow banner cheered as she ran toward them with the silliest grin on her face. Seren watched as Ethan greeted her with a big bear hug and a sweet kiss on the forehead. Despite having hung out with each other on the Hogwarts Express, it was clear that Ethan wanted Faith to be with her during the four remaining years of his student life.
After a moment, they both faced Seren. With Ethan’s arm still wrapped around his sister, he gave her an encouraging smile and a thumbs up with his free hand.
Watching them together, Seren decided that it didn’t matter where she was as long as she could be with them, wherever that would be. She didn’t care about loyalty and tolerance, but she loved Faith too much that she’d at least tolerate being with these do-gooders for seven years if it meant being with her best friend.
Seren turned back at the headmistress as she resumed calling students onto the stool. Finally, after the sixth cheer died down from the Gryffindors, Serendipity Cole was called. She stepped onto the platform with a decided look on her face, unaware that the hat knew her better than she knew herself. It was only when she sat on the stool that she felt the aura held by the students under the green banner.
Ambitious. Intimidating. Powerful.
So this was Slytherin.
Suddenly, Seren was confused about what she really wanted. But before she could start to think through her choices, the hat was dropped onto her head and she was cut off by the voice that seemed to come from inside her head.
With a defeated sigh, she decided to close her eyes and let the hat make the decision for her.
"Placing you isn't going to be difficult. All of the important stuff comes right to the forefront. You're not a Hufflepuff, but I think you already knew that. No, for you it'll be...Slytherin!"
