Leading the competitors of the first round to the duelling platform, Katherine gestured for each of them to take up a position at either end, while she herself stepped up to a podium overlooking them. With a tap of her wand in the air, the headmistress pointed the tip at her throat, speaking out in a magically-amplified voice. "Welcome, competitors, to the first round of duelling. As always, the victor of this round will move on to compete in the next, and is brought one step closer to becoming one of this year's duelling champions. Wands at the ready, and prepare yourselves for the duel ahead." Katherine called, giving the students an opportunity to take on a comfortable stance. "Now, bow and commence."
The duel begins now. You have 24 hours from this to post your first reply, or face disqualification. Once both duelists have posted, you will have 24 hours from your opponents post to reply, or be disqualified. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. Duels will run until there is a winner or until 6 IRL days have passed, in which case the winner will be chosen by RNG. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!

As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

Sydney didn't bother hiding her sneer when she saw Michael had signed up to duel again. It was just a shame she had Professor Alicastell as a proctor or she'd have picked a few choice spells and words to really hammer the message home that Michael was wasting everyone's time. "You really don't learn, do you," she said, barely inclining her head before firing off her first spell. "Levicorpus!"

Michael was excited for his final dueling tournament before graduating. He thought it had been a lot of fun and actually led him to some notoriety among his friends back home. They appreciated his sense of humor much more than many of the boring folks here. Thankfully, he had friends like Sully and Lysander who at least humored him. When he saw that he'd been paired with Sydney once again, he couldn't but snicker. That girl had issues, and the more she reacted to him, the easier it was to mess with her. As they took to the stage, Michael adjusted his black robes before quickly taking them off to reveal a red and gold shimmering set of robes that spelled "victor" across the back. If he couldn't dazzle her with magic, he could just legitimately dazzle her. Blocking his spell, he sent back a stretching jinx.

Sydney's lip curled in disgust at Michael's ridiculous display. This idiot seriously needed to grow up or get out. She blocked his spell, making sure to show how easy it was for her, before firing a non-verbal incendio charm at him. His gaudy robes were just asking to be set on fire.

Michael gave his sparkling robes a swish as he watched Sydney easily block his spell and was a little surprised when he saw some magic come right back at him, unsure of what it was. He wasn't quick enough and watched as it hit the side of his billowing robes, immeadiately sparking bright flames similar to the colors on his robe. He thought for a moment before gleefully spinning as the flames continued to engulf the bottom of his robes. "THE BOY ON FIRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" he exclaimed before sending back his own fire spell.

/]hrSydney didn't know why she was surprised that even being on fire wasn't enough to curb Michael's stupidity. She hoped she managed to melt those stupid robes onto him as the fire continued. "Running out of ideas?" she called to Michael as he tried to set her alight, not bothering to block it but simply extinguishing the flames with an extinguishing charm. The duelling chamber was starting to smell distinctly of burnt fabric. Leveling her wand, Sydney cast another non-verbal spell, hoping to hit Michael with Tarantallegra. If he wanted to look like a fool she was happy to help.

Michael was enjoying the additional flames on his outfit, even if they were getting a little close for comfort. While he still had the robe on after twirling, it didn't stop moving once Sydney's spell hit him. He had completely missed the fact she had let his spell hit her. As his legs started to move quite wildly, he looked up at Sydney. "Don't you wish you woulda taken me to the ball, Townsend? We could have danced the night away!" Unbothered by the exhausting leg movements and ever rising fire, Michael lifted his wand. "Accio my pet DRAGONS!" It took a moment, but quickly, about 100 flying miniature dragons came zooming into the dueling chamber behind him as he laughed. They began swarming every which way, and Michael felt rather proud of his stunt. He point his wand to himself, watching as his legs stopped dancing and the fire disappeared, leaving mangled ends to his shimmery robes.

Sydney grit her teeth when Michael simply waved away her jinxes. Next time she'd have to go with something strong than incendio if she wanted to burn that stupid smile of his face. She hadn't been expecting anything to come of Michael's ridiculous summoning spell, her mouth stuck open as she'd gone to cast her own spell only to have the chamber fill with miniature dragons. "You really want to get your little toys involved in this? Fine," Sydney said, directing her wand away from Michael and towards the dragons and blasting several them away with a harshly thrown reducto.

Katherine was unsurprised by the events unfolding before her. Sydney and Michael's duels were...something, to be sure. Her hands were clasped together, nose wrinkling slightly at the smell of smoking from the students. It hadn't taken long for someone to be set alight, though it didn't elicit a reaction from the headmistress, until Michael decided to summon an unreasonable amount of small dragons for one person to have in their possession. It was a chaotic scene. Katherine could only barely make out the students after one of them blasted away a few of the animate creatures. This was enough. Raising her wand, the headmistress cast a freezing charm over the platform, immobilizing the horde of dragons in mid-air. "Use of spells on objects outside of the duelling platform is prohibited. As such, Mr Newton is disqualified from this round. Miss Townsend is the victor." She announced, lowering her wand back down. "Mr Newton, please remove your toys from the chambers." She asked, before stepping down from the podium to attend to the next duelists.

Michael was beaming joyfully as his dragons surrounded the chamber until Sydney ruined his fun and started killing them. Technically, they weren't alive, but they were still his pets, and he had spent his hard earned galleons on them. Narrowly ducking Sydney's spell, he intended to run towards her on the platform to stop her before being interrupted by the headmistress. The Gryffindor truly didn't care that he'd lost - it had happened every year, and he was never in it to win it. "How would you feel if I blew up your.. your... well, you know what? You wouldn't even understand becasue you probably don't have something you care about so much! Miserable human," he continued, muttering the last part to himself. He waved his wand towards the air. "Impedimentia," Michael said, watching as his dragons stopped flying around and quickly fell to the ground. He didn't have a bag, but he tried to collect as many as he could in the remnants of his golden burnt robes.

Sydney had her wand raised, still ready to continue blast away at Michaels ridiculous toys. "If you didn't want them damaged, you shouldn't have brought them onto the platform-" she started, wand already moving when the the toy dragons were suddenly immobilized and Sydney herself paused. She could hardly believe Alicastell was actually siding with her and she narrowed her eyes for a moment as she was declared the victor. Via a technicality. Of course. It was so typical for her to be robbed of an actual victory in her final match against Michael and she lowered her wand arm in a huff. She shot Michael one last scathing look before shoving her wand in her pocket and stalking from the chamber. She'd have to find another way to get her closure with Michael without the headmistress interfering.
