Leading the competitors of the first round to the duelling platform, Katherine gestured for each of them to take up a position at either end, while she herself stepped up to a podium overlooking them. With a tap of her wand in the air, the headmistress pointed the tip at her throat, speaking out in a magically-amplified voice. "Welcome, competitors, to the first round of duelling. As always, the victor of this round will move on to compete in the next, and is brought one step closer to becoming one of this year's duelling champions. Wands at the ready, and prepare yourselves for the duel ahead." Katherine called, giving the students an opportunity to take on a comfortable stance. "Now, bow and commence."
The duel begins now. You have 24 hours to post, or face disqualification. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!
As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

@Ryan Fisk vs @Leia Hume

Ryan wasn't a very competitive person, and he knew he wasn't exactly the best duelist either. He liked to think too much about what he was going to do, which didn't really go in his favour against another person. Especially not a person who was also the champion last year. Still, Ryan liked the chance to get to test out magic without getting in trouble, so he was eager to start once they had finished all the introductions and bowing. Opting for something new he'd learnt this year, Ryan shot off a confundo jinx at Leia.

This was the only part of school Leia very openly prepared for, and with each year she felt more and more pressure. She'd won the last two years of her duelling and she knew that it would be very good to get a third win. She wanted it badly. Leia looked at her opinent. She wouldn't have minded who it was, was just focused on this. She bowed to him, and was disappointed when he got the first spell. She blocked it and cast back, "Diffindo,"

Ryan was almost tempted to let Leia's spell hit him, just to see how much it cut. Surely it would go through his robes. But he'd already spotted Nicole in the crowd earlier and he was sure she'd be upset if he let that happen. He threw up a half-hearted shield charm before casting a bat-boogey hex in return.

Nicole hated watching duels. Or more specifically, she hated watching her brother duel. Ryan was always too busy inside his head to be a good duellist, and Nicole knew Leia was a clever witch, not to mention her year's duelling champion. Ryan didn't stand a chance. Nicole could only watch though, hand half over her eyes as the duel went underway, hoping however Ryan lost, it wouldn't be too embarrassing or painful.

:Leia frowned a little at his shield, it hadn't seemed all that strong. She didn't want to jinx it by assuming she might win from just one spell, but she knew she'd need to keep paying attention to it. She blocked his spell with a practiced confidence. "Incendio,"

Ryan felt like he could see the gears turning in Leia's head before she threw her next spell. This time he definitely wasn't going to be able to get a shield up, having to dodge to the side to avoid the fire. At least that was one spell he didn't need to experience what happened if her got hit. Righting himself, Ryan sent back a knee-reversal hex.

Leia stayed very alert, watching him carefully as he dodged out the way of her spell. She blocked his spell with a firm shield, it was too early for her to make mistakes. She then followed it with a "Tarantallegra,"

Ryan still wasn't quite in the right position when Leia sent another curse his way, unable to bring up a strong enough shield in time to block it this time. The effect was instant, and fascinating. His legs began to move of their own according, jerk the rest of his body around the stage as Ryan watched, fascinated to see his legs moving without in of his input. Ryan was so fascinated he didn't even notice them river dancing him over to the edge of the stage until he was already half-way off it, hitting the ground with a thump. His legs seemed undeterred by the change of orientation, wiggling enthusiastically as Ryan lay on his back on the ground.

Katherine raised her hands to signal the duel's conclusion. "The victor is Leia Hume. Congratulations on moving forward to the next round," She called, stepping aside to deal with Ryan's restless legs before they could pick themselves up and dance him elsewhere.
