Leading the competitors of the first round to the duelling platform, Katherine gestured for each of them to take up a position at either end, while she herself stepped up to a podium overlooking them. With a tap of her wand in the air, the headmistress pointed the tip at her throat, speaking out in a magically-amplified voice. "Welcome, competitors, to the first round of duelling. As always, the victor of this round will move on to compete in the next, and is brought one step closer to becoming one of this year's duelling champions. Wands at the ready, and prepare yourselves for the duel ahead." Katherine called, giving the students an opportunity to take on a comfortable stance. "Now, bow and commence."

The duel begins now. You have 24 hours to post, or face disqualification. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!
As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

Brooke was keen to not have a repeat of last year, and even more so when she saw her opponent was. "May the best duelist win," she said with a friendly smile to Ivy as they bowed, though Brooke thought (and hoped) privately that it would be her. Ivy was a clever witch, but Brooke had worked hard for this. If Sydney could be a duelling champion, surely she could too. Straightening up, Brooke took the chance to cast the first spell, throwing a body-bind jinx at Ivy.

Ivy smiled at Brooke, bowing quickly. "Thanks, I will." She said back, only half-joking. She then blocked Brooke's spell before casting one of her own. "Stupefy!"

Brooke grinned at Ivy's response, throwing up a shield charm when Ivy shot a stunning spell back at her, though she had to flinch as the spell collided hard with her shield. Not letting herself appear rattled, Brooke returned fire with a jelly-fingers jinx.

Ivy knew she had to focus and tried her best to do so. She blocked Brooke's spell, quickly thinking of one of her own to cast back. "Tarantallegra."

Brooke gave herself a little mental shake, getting her bearings as Ivy blocked her spell before returning fire with one of her own. Brooke had spent plenty of time with the SDA practicing shields, so she had no excuse to be nervous about it. She threw up her shield spell more confidentially this time, wasting no time in sending a stunning spell back at Ivy, hoping to catch her off guard with spell rather than strength.

Ivy was feeling very competitive, she needed to win this. She had the feeling Brooke would never let her forget it if she lost here. She threw up a shield charm to block Brooke's spell, then cast one back. "Petrificus Totalus!"

Ivy wasn't going easy on her, not that Brooke had expected her to, but it would have been nice to not have to fight so hard in her first round. But Brooke was determined not to lose again, blocking Ivy's jinx before returning with her own spell. "Everte Statum!"

Ivy wished Brooke would just slip up, she wanted to get past the first round. She blocked Brooke's next spell, then cast her next spell. "Rictusempra."

Brooke was gaining more and more confidence in her shield charms, though she did let out a small laugh when Ivy's next spell collided with her shield, unsure if it was a nervous reaction or not. Trying to slow Ivy down, she sent back a trip jinx in return.

Brooke could feel the urge to rush and try and get past Ivy's shields, but she knew how to be patient. She blocked Ivy's jinx again, giving her friend a cheerful smile as she could muster. "One of us is going to mess up eventually," she called out, content that it wouldn't be her. "Petrificus Totalus!"

Brooke was going to offer up another pithy comment to Ivy when she realized Ivy hadn't aimed her next spell where Brooke had been expecting. Abanoning her shield charm, Brooke hurried jumped aside, frowning at Ivy and hurrying to smooth out her hair with one hand as she cast a fur-growing spell in return. It would win her the duel, but it would make Ivy look silly, which seemed more appealing to Brooke in the moment.
