Matt had surprised himself by agreeing to help out during the duelling tournament. He wasn't a very big duelist himself, but he had often enjoyed watching the duels. Once the two competitors seemed to be ready for the duel to begin, Matt pointed them to their places before speaking to them. "Welcome to your first round of duelling. The victor of this duel will be able to go on to the next round." Matt said. "If you break the rules, you'll be disqualified. Once you're unable to duel, you've lost." He explained. "When you're ready, bow to your opponent and get started." Matt said, stepping back to let the duel begin.

The duel begins now. You have 24 hours from this to post your first reply, or face disqualification. Once both duelists have posted, you will have 24 hours from your opponents post to reply, or be disqualified. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. Duels will run until there is a winner or until 6 IRL days have passed, in which case the winner will be chosen by RNG. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!

As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

Michael still couldn’t believe he had made it through two rounds of the duel. He bowed towards the SDA leader and cast his first spell. “Stupefy!”

Sydney twirled her wand impatiently as they were ushered on stage of her next duel. This was her final match and she had no intention of wasting any time winning it. She didn't know Michael Newton that well, but he was a typical rowdy Gryffindor that she was perfectly prepared to take down a peg. After bowing, she blocked his boring stunning spell, shooting back and incendio to try and wake her opponent up.

Michael blocked Sydney's spell and gave an audible sigh of surprise. Fire seemed a little intense for his taste, but he was figured the co-leader of the SDA didn't want to go down without a fight. Michael shot a babbling curse back at Sydney.

A babbling curse was slightly more interesting and Sydney hoped that meant this duel wouldn't be a complete bore. She supposed Michael had made it all the way to the finals in his first year here, so maybe things would turn out to be more interesting. Blocking his curse, Sydney decided to try something different, launching a feather-light spell at Michael. If it hit, it might make him easier to knock over or at least throw off his balance.

Michael almost didn't block Sydney's spell. She was pretty good, but Michael was just enjoying the natural competitiveness. "Confundo," he said, sending a spell to his opponent with a grin.

Sydney grit her teeth when Michael blocked her spell. She wasn't flustered yet, but she could feel the growing urge to wipe that grin off Michael's face. She blocked Michael's next spell flippantly before returning fire with her own spell. "Reducto!"

Michael felt like Sydney wouldn't back down or let her guard up until she had completely clobbered him. "Impedimentia," he said, after blocking her spell. "Are you tired yet, Townsend?" he asked with a smile.

Sydney scoffed when Michael started getting chatty, though she was at least more impressed with his spell choices. "Not at all, why, are you?" She said sharply, squaring up before using her favourite spell, the frog-vomiting curse. "Amphbian Eructo!"*

Michael giggled at Sydney's response and gave her a shrug as he blocked her spell. He thought she was taking all of this way too seriously; it was just a silly duel. "Petrificus Totalus," he said, wondering if Sydney did have any weak spots or if she was willing to go on forever.

Sydney could tell Michael wasn't taking this duel seriously, rolling his eyes when he actually started giggling. In the middle of a duel. She couldn't wait to wipe that smile off his face. She blocked his spell again, annoyed that her frog vomiting spell hadn't managed any effect and decided to go for a class jelly-legs jinx instead.

Michael was getting kind of tired of the duel. No one was getting hit, and nothing interesting was happening. When Sydney sent a spell back to him, the Gryffindor moved out of the way instead of shielding himself. "Scourgify!" he shouted with a laugh, hoping to throw Sydney off her game.

If Kas was being honest, he hadn't expected Michael to get very far in the tournament, let alone make it all the way to the fifth year finals. Now he was up against one of the SDA leaders and Kas just hoped Michael managed to avoid getting maimed. It was odd seeing Michael's usual carefree self up against someone as serious as Sydney Townsend and Kas had to hide an amused snort behind his hand several times as the duel progressed. He was almost certain Michael didn't have a plan here, but at least it was entertaining to watch someone else be as baffled by Michael's goofiness as he was.

Sydney blocked Michael's next spell on instinct but it did cause her pause when she processed what Michael had cast. "What are you playing at?" She asked haughtily, pointing her wand at Michael as if the threat of another hex would somehow make him take this more seriously than before. "If you're going to act stupid, then fine," She said, switching to a jelly-brain jinx.

Michael laughed at Sydney's reaction as he blocked her spell. "Ah, come on Syd! Just trying to have a little fun," he replied, unsure if she even went by a nickname but used it just to lighten the atmosphere. "Furnunculus," he said, trying to think of the silliest spells he could throw at her now.

Sydney didn't care for Michael's jovial attitude one bit. "We're not friends," She said when Michael called her 'Syd', curling her lip. She blocked his next spell, glad it was actually a serviceable jinx a the very least. "If you're going to treat this like a joke- Rictusempra!"

Michael gasped and then grabbed his chest. "Sydney! I thought you were going to be the godmother to my children. I'm heartbroken," he answered dramatically, dodging her spell again as he continued his theatrics. "Tarantallegra," he said, completely over this duel and hoping the spell would hit so they could just laugh together.

Sydney knew she should have expected Michael to be an annoying Gryffindor, almost all of them were, but this was reaching a new level. The implication that Michael wasn't taking her seriously, that he didn't consider her a threat, rubbed her the wrong way and Sydney was itching to wipe that smirk off his face. Blocking his spell again, she wasted no time shooting back her next spell, this time with more malice behind it than before. "Diffindo!"

There was something surreal about watching Michael laugh and dance around in the face of what he was starting to suspect was murderous intent from his opponent. Kas admired Michael's ability to not take himself too seriously, so he supposed it would be apt if Michael managed to joke his way into the hospital wing this time. Still, his strategy seemed to be working, and Kas couldn't deny it'd be crazy funny if he managed to win like this.

Sydney didn't seem to enjoy Michael's banter, and at that point, he realized that this duel just wasn't fun anymore. He didn't want to get hit by any spell, but when he heard Sydney speak, he knew what he had to do. Holding up his none wand hand, Michael released just hit pointer finger into the air, allowing the edge of the spell to hit, barely slicing his finger. He stared at it for a moment, expecting more blood, but went with what Merlin had given him. "OH NO!" he yelled, falling to the ground as he held his finger. "I'm BLEEEEEDING! Oh, the torture, the aGONY!" The Gryffindor kept holding his finger in the air as one mere drop of blood fell down onto his hand as he rolled vigorously on the floor. Before long, he started giggling and then made a horrendous dying noise, shooting his arms and legs into the air for a moment and then flopping them back down, his head finally resting to look at Sydney with his tongue stuck out. As he attempted to remain frozen, he could feel a few snickers coming through and threw a wink at Kas, who was now in his eye sight.

Sydney didn't move from her defensive stance, waiting to see when Michael might stop his theatrics to actually continue the duel. When it seemed like he had no actual plans do to so, Sydney was incensed. "What? No, get up!" She said, actually stomping her foot. "This is ridiculous, are you giving up? What are you doing?" She snapped, looking towards Professor Ward as if he might actually do anything about this. At least, Michael could get disqualified for.. Whatever flailing he was doing, but that would still be a pathetic win. He had let her win and now he was getting the last laugh. Furious, Sydney barely resisted throwing another hex Michael's way, waiting for the proctor's call so she could storm off the stage.

Kas actually flinched when Michael finally got hit. It was actually a relief to see Michael ham it up as much as he did though, a reassurance that he was actually fine, though it was clear his opponent wasn't taking her heroic victory as well as Michael had taken his apparent loss. "Bold strategy," Kas said quietly once the dust had settled, slinking closer to the stage where he could be eye level with Michael were he was laying on the stage. "Very convincing though. What's the recovery time on grievous duelling injuries like yours? Weeks? Months?" He couldn't say it, but even despite Michael having lost the final, Kas was oddly proud of him. Maybe they were both wired wrong if seeing his boyfriend laying in there defeat made him happy, but Kas wasn't going to complain.

Michael started giggling at Sydney's apparent meltdown. He thought she would be happy with winning, but he obviously was mistaken. Either way, it was all in good fun, and he kept his death pose as Kas approached him. "I only have moments left," he labored, reaching for Kas' hand. "Stay with me before. I. Perish." He made another dying sound similar to a bleating goat. Opening his eyes, he started to giggle and sat up, eyeing Sydney. "Do you think she'll try to kill me in my sleep? I have no doubt she could get into Gryffindor if she really tried." Michael hadn't intended to make any enemies at Hogwarts, but it was out of his control now.
