Leading the first batch of duelists onto the stage, Katherine gestured for them to take their positions on opposite ends, and briefly explained the rules and formalities as a refresher, though by now almost everyone both competing and spectating was bound to know them. With all said and done, the Headmistress took her place on a raised podium overlooking the stage and the crowd gathered around it, before taking her wand to her throat. "Bow and commence." Her voice boomed clearly, informing the competitors that they were welcome to begin.

OOCOut of Character:
The duel begins now. You have 24 hours to post, or face disqualification. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!
As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

Sydney hadn't forgotten last year's dueling tournament and how she'd been slighted by Professor Alicastell in a wholly unfair call. She was covering the tournament for HM again and had every intention of watching and exposing the headmistress this year. But first, she had to take out Daintree in her our year group. She knew Eric was also dueling again, and she wasn't going to back down until they'd had a proper rematch. "You better make this interesting," Sydney said with a determined grin, finishing her bow and immediately moving to cast incendio, aiming for Daintree's robes.

Daintree looked at who he was faced with and rolled his eyes at their request. But he knew he would try and give Sydney a good fight. He blocked her spell and then returned with a quick "Rictusempra"

Daintree was smarter than most of their classmates, so Sydney was hoping he wouldn't let her down and be boring. Still, she wasn't going to heckle him in case Professor Alicastell decided Sydney needed to be disqualified for daring to speak again. Casting a shield charm to knock Daintree's first spell aside, Sydney returned fire with a Jelly-fingers jinx, hoping to make him drop his wand.

Daintree blocked the spell as it raced towards him. He knew that these duels would get easier the older he got and therefore had more he could do, but for now he just picked the slug vomiting curse and threw that at her.

Daintree wasn't backing down, not that Sydney had expected him to. Pulling up another shield charm, Sydney had to take a quick step back as the curse hit her shield. Not wanting to pause andlet Daintree catch his breath, Sydney returned another spell back at him. "Locomotor Mortis!".

Daintree dodged out of the way of the spell that she sent to him, since there was little time for him to cast a shield. He then cast back, "Petrificus Totalus,"

Still feeling off balance from losing her stance before, Sydney didn't have enough time to get her shield up this time, choosing instead to step aside, just managing to clear the spell as she used her moment to launch her own spell to give herself some breathing room. "Everte Statum!" It seemed like they were both trying to immobilize each other, but Sydney hoped knocking Daintree back might buy her more time to think.

Since he had had to dodge the last spell, he very quickly made sure this time around that he blocked her spell with a protego, which he managed. He knew that they didn't have a lot of spells but it didn't deter him from hitting back with the trip jinx

Sydney was still feeling a bit harried when Daintree managed to block her next spell, knowing she wasn't going to have time to right herself and get her shield charm in place, she braced for his own spell. She stumbled, trying to fall forward as the trip jinx hit her so she could keep an eye on Daintree and hold onto to her wand. Despite the ache from hitting the floor of the stage, Sydney was at least able to focus all her attention now on sending out the strongest stunning spell she could, hoping to blast through Daintree's shield so she could scramble back to her feet.

Daintree felt a little bad as he watched Sydney not manage to put a shield up in time and instead tripped. He most felt proud of himself for what he had managed to do. He didn't waste too much time and just blocked the spell that she threw back at him, almost tripping over his own feet at the force of it, and after a moment, then fought back with, "Stupefy,"

Sydney had to get her act together, definitely throw up another shield charm when Daintree tried to stun her. She had no intention of going out in the first round again, keep her mouth shut in a tight grimace except to cast her next spell, sending a knee-reversal hex at her opponent.

The spell she fired at him, hit quickly, and he felt the uncomfortable pain quickly. He knew if he waited a moment longer he'd up on the floor, so he was quick to cast finite. Though when he did he was bbrought to his knees. He took a small breath and then fired back with a antler jinx.

Tres was eagerly watching her boyfriend battling her horrible room mate from the crowd, anticipating that Sydney would probably try and hurt Daintree as much as she possibly could, but had every belief that Dain would be able to stand his ground. She winced a little at the knee spell as she saw it hit him. Even if he was familiar as a beater taking bludgers she couldn’t imagine pain was very easy to deal with. “Come on Dain! Take her down!” She called out, practising bouncing to try and get her voice heard over the crowd that she was considerably tinier than.

Sydney almost hesitated when she saw the look of pain cross Daintree's face. There was a moment when he would have been wide open to another hit as he reserved the hex, but Sydney stood frozen for a moment, only spurred on when she heard someone yelling in the audience, encouraging Daintree to take her down. Gritting her teeth, Sydney gripped her wand and casting a stunning spell, hoping to catch Daintree before he had too much time to recover.

Daintree was distracted for a moment as he heard tres call out in the crowd, he wasn't sure he liked having her there. It meant he had to win, or it would be embarrasing. He looked back at Sydney and tried to give a bbit of an apologetic look, but focused more so on casting a shield. It wasn't as good as before, clearly he was a bit thrown off, but he equally just sent back a stunning spell

Sydney was starting to feel tired, she could feel her arms growing tired and frowned. She couldn't have her spellwork getting sloppy right now, though she could only help Daintree was feeling some strain too. He hadn't been the most challenging or unique opponent, but he wasn't backing down either and Sydney was determined to win. Sydney blocked Daintree's incoming spell, barely pausing for a breath before casting her own Petrificus Totalus. If she could just get the right spell to hit she'd have this and be able to move on to take Eric down.

Sydney didn't bother trying to block Daintree's next spell, trying to cut him off by casting a disarming spell immediately after him. Daintree's spell slamming into her and Sydney had a split second where nothing happened before her clothes began to burn. With an indignant squawk, she ripped her cloak off, throwing the still burning cloth to the ground, throwing a quick finite at it before leveling her wand back at Daintree. She supposed she had been the one to ask for things not to be boring she thought rather viciously, trying to ignore it still smoldering cloak nearby.

Seeing the spell land made Dain feel pretty good. He was distracted enough that he didn't see the spell coming towards him and wasn't able to block it in time and his wand flew out of his hand. The other girl was on fire but he hadn't paid attention and the wand was out of his hand.

Out of breath but victorious, Sydney lowered her wand, giving Daintree a nod of recognition of a duel well fought, not daring to say anything in case Alicastell decided to unjustly disqualify her again. Though she couldn't help the smug grin on her face at finally winning, even if it fell a moment later when she remembered the state of her cloak.
