Transfiguration 3:2

Lesson Two: Learning Locusta (frog into grashopper)
Leif admittedly wasn't the biggest fan of today's lesson, shooting a glance at the large glass tank on his desk while he waved his wand to open his classroom door. He made sure to keep an eye on the frogs inside of the tank though, hoping they kept calm but already spotting a few troublemakers between them.

"Welcome back!" He greeted his students when he closed the door to the room with another flick of his wand. "Today we'll be starting on Animate to Animate Transfiguration for the first time. Hence the frogs." Leif grinned, nodding towards the large tank that took up almost all of his desk space. "Animate to Animate Transfiguration is going to prove more difficult than the other things we've been practicing until now so I hope you're all up for a challenge." He explained, calmly watching his students' reactions. Animate to Animate Transfiguration was a debatable subject for some so he quietly prepared himself for the chance of there being some pushback before he continued.

"Today we'll be learning how to transfigure these guys into grasshoppers. I know some of you might be reluctant when it comes to this type of transfiguration so I'd like to remind you that this is not a painful progress. It's not harmful to the creatures we're transfiguring. Not even if you mess it up. Although I'd advice you all tro try your absolute best." Leif continued, hoping no one would protest. He'd hate to have his classroom turn into a debate space.

"The type of transfiguration we'll be performing today is referred to as Cross-Species Transfiguration. A term you might want to write down." He told them with a wink. "It requires a lot more concentration and visualization so make sure you concentrate and give it your all." He paused for a second to make sure his class was paying attention to what he was saying. Mistakes could happen, but he'd rather not deal with them.

"Now, for the practical part." Leif stepped back over to the terrarium and lifted out a large frog, setting it down on what little free space was left on his desk. It hopped around a little, but didn't seem too keen on actually jumping off the desk. "The wand movement for this pell is simple, just straighten your arm and point your wand directly at the frog." He stated, demonstrating what he was telling them. "These buggers will move, so make sure you adjust your aim accordingly. Once you're sure you've got good aim.. Locusta!" He incantated, watching the frog shift into a bright green grasshopper. In comparion to the frog though, the grasshopper didn't seem as reluctant and jumped right off his desk before hopping towards the centre of the classroom. "Whoops. Someone get that back to me, please." He laughed, waving his wand to freeze the grasshopper in mid-air so one of his students could easily bring it back to him. "Anyways. Make sure to keep track of your frog. Or grasshopper. Whichever species it is at the time. Now, I'd like you all to come up to my desk, get a frog and return to your seat. There will be no leaving your seats after that. Chances of one of these creatures hopping off are not particularly slim and we wouldn't want you stepping on one of them now, would we? Alright, that's about all. Let's get to it!" Leif smiled, waving his wand to make the incantation appear on the board just in case and handing out frogs to his students as they came up to his desk.

Roleplay turning a frog into a grasshopper for full marks.
One student may retrieve the grasshopper professor Odegard froze and return it to him for some house points.

Callie walked into the transfiguration classroom and took her usual spot in the room. She glanced at the professor as the man got started. She got the impression they would be getting another lecture, so she grabbed her quill and her parchment and began writing down what the professor was saying, but then quickly it was a lesson they’d be doing a spell in, and Callie was very excited to get rid of her quill. Callie listened along as the professor then went over the spell, and then showed the spell to them. She was happy to then be able to do it herself. She took a frog and imagined it becoming a grasshopper. How it would change shape to be able to do that. Callie then pointed her wand at it and said, ”Locusta,” Callie said. She had to do the spell a couple of times before she got it and then immediately almost lost the grasshopper. Callie was pretty pleased with herself and then headed out of the classroom when she could.

Enoch walked into the transfiguration classroom, and was really hopeful that this would be a simple lecture. That he wouldn’t have to make much of an effort at all. Of course, Enoch rarely got what he wanted, so it was a lesson where they had to watch out for their animal that they would transfiguring. He listened along to the lecture, but wasn’t too interested in it. He then took his frog when it was handed to him. He looked at it. Just stared at the frog and eventually did attempt to do the spell. He was half hearted with it, spending most of the lesson with nothing happening until the very end when it did finally transfigure. He wasn’t bothered by managing it and just headed out of the room when he could.

When Teddy entered the classroom, he glanced at the glass tank on the professor's desk, where the frogs were contained. He knew then that they would be practicing on animals today. When the lesson started, Teddy focused his attention on the professor, he wasn't totally convinced that transfiguring animals didn't harm them, but decided to choose not to speak up about it in that moment. Teddy watched the demonstration and then the grasshopper made an escape, prompting the professor to freeze it mid-air with a flick of his wand. The ever helpful Teddy, picked up the grasshopper and handed it back to the professor.

He retrieved his own frog and returned to his seat, getting started with the practical. He took out his wand and aimed, "Locusta." The transfiguration spell didn't work at first, but he kept practicing and finally, he had a grasshopper in front of him, It was cool to see, but he couldn't think of a time that this spell would ever be useful in his life. You never know though.

Transfiguration was probably the most complicated branch of magic they were taking on, but that was why Audrey liked it so much. She had to engage her brain, and it gave her something to focus on. She never felt bored when she was doing Transfiguration work. Her eyes widened and she couldn't help but beam when Professor Odegard told them they were doing animate to animate Transfiguration. Audrey hoped nobody would waste time arguing about it so they could just get into doing the work, because there was a lot to think about.

Luckily this time, Audrey was more familiar with grasshoppers than she had been with turtles, and in this case as well they were both animals that jumped. Her frog seemed keen to demonstrate that fact, too, as it jumped on her face when she was lining up the spell. "Gross," she laughed, placing the frog back down and looking over it with a comically serious frown. "Stay right where you are or this is gonna be wayyyy worse for you," she said, sternly but somehow mischievously. She slumped down a little to keep a hold of her frog with one hand while she focused, picturing the grasshopper in her mind, then let it go so she could avoid getting her hand caught in the spell. She cleared her throat, saying "Locusta!" and watching, after a couple of attempts, the frog shrink down and turn into a grasshopper. Which also jumped up onto her face, landing right on her nose. "Wow," she laughed, picking it up and examining it curiously. This wasn't what she meant when she said she wanted guys to be all over her, but it was funny all the same.

Veronica was looking forward to learning something practical and had to admit it did amuse her to think how much Millie was going to dislike it, of the two of them her sister preferred the theoretical side of learning which explained why she had taken on so many electives. Veronica settled in what was becoming her usual seat and waited for Professor Odegard to begin his lesson. He soon explained that they would be learning to transfigure frogs into grasshoppers, the poor buggers. The wand movement for the spell seemed simple enough, Veronica might have enjoyed the practical side of magic but it didn't mean she was good at it, the simpler the better. She listened to Professor Odegard to try and pick up as many tips as possible on how to be successful. Veronica didn't pay too much attention to the theory side of the spell, she knew Millie would have her covered for that but when it was time to grab a frog and start practicing she practically skipped to the professors desk and grabbed a frog which she carried back to her desk.

She visualised the transformation in her mind, that was important she thought, Veronica held her wand straight out and down at the frog on her desk who thankfully hadn't moved yet and muttered the incantation. "Locusta," To her amazement, the frog transfigured on her first try. Veronica was astounded but she wasn't going to deny herself the moment but the moment of celebration she allowed did mean she lost the grasshopper once it hopped off her desk, she spent the rest of the lesson looking for it. Once she had found it and returned it to Professor Odegard, she left the classroom once they had been dismissed.

Millie hoped she wouldn't struggle with the practical side of Transfiguration especially as she knew Veronica would do well. She made her way into Professor Odegard's classroom and settled into a seat. He explained to them they would turning a frog into a grasshopper which should like a difficult endeavour to begin with but grasshoppers were notoriously hoppy and if she was able to transform a frog into a grasshopper, who was to say if she would be able to keep hold of her grasshopper. She listened to the professor as he explained the incantation and wand movement again in case anyone had forgotten and once she felt ready she went to Professor Odegard's desk and grabbed a frog.

She struggled with the incantation for a while, there were several attempts made while the frog remained unchanged on her desk, eventually Millie was able to complete the transformation and as grasshopper sat on her desk but it continued to croak rather than chirp which was troubling, Millie still had a lot of work to do to improve her spell casting.

The semester always seemed to fly by somehow. Maybe because she was focusing on classes and things? Whatever it was, she hummed softly as she straightened out her uniform and walked to class. She took her seat and looked up to the Professor.

Transfiguration was definitely interesting and seemed like fun. She sat down, and took out her parchments. She took a few notes about the lesson and reviewed what she knew before pulling out her wand to try it herself. She ran a thumb over the wood, evened out her breathing, and tried the spell. "Locusta!" She declared. Nothing happened. She frowned and tried again. "Locusta!"

Again, nothing happened. She took another deep breath, closed her eyes, tried to feel the magic... and maybe it was just in her head, but she was sure for a moment she felt it. "Locusta!" She tried again, and she could've sworn she felt something. She opened her eyes, and let out a squeak. The frog had turned into a grasshopper- but it was still frog sized. And it jumped.

Elodie let out a little shout and hit the ground, hands over her head. She didn't normally mind bugs, but that wasn't frog sized grasshoppers.

@Professor Leif Odegard

Professor Odegard had been wandering through the classroom, checking his students' work and making sure everyone was doing alright. He helped out a few times, reminding them to clearly imagine a grasshopper before attending the spell and catching a few frogs and grasshoppers that had managed to make their way off of a student's desk. His head snapped when one of his students shouted and was quick to wave his wand at a particularly large grasshopper he noticed jump off a table. "Nothing too worry about, miss Wynshaw, you can get back up." Leif spoke in a friendly matter, making his way over while the grasshopper was still frozen in mid-air. "Just a little mishap with the sizing, it happens." He smiled. @Elodie Wynshaw

The third year Slytherin wondered if he made a mistake with trying so hard with classes. Dante Styx did not like having homework, and he did not like it when he was told to do something he did not want to do. That was his entire personality. Dante also made sure to sit far, far away from Enoch. He much preferred sitting next to his friends. Dante did not have many, but those that he did, he cherished. Dante finished getting dressed and made his way out of the Slytherin dorm so that he could get to class on time. He needed to remain on top of things, and felt that this was the way to do it - leaving a little earlier.

Dante walked in the Transfiguration classroom and settled in his seat. They were going to be turning frogs into grasshoppers. He crinkled his face at the thought, but of well. He would have to concentrate, and at least the spell itself was easy to say. Locusta. Dante could do this. He went up and got the frog that he was going to use. He went back and concentrated on the spell. It took him four tries before he finally got it right, and grabbed it before it tried to hop away. At least it did not ribbit right? He took it to the front to get graded, and then left once they were free to.

Dominic's first week had gone quite smoothly and he was happy with all of the classes that he was taking. Some of it was boring, but the hufflepuff just tried his best to stay positive that he would get through it all. After all, he had the support of his professors if he really needed the help and so he didn't see any reason to stress about it, especially considering he was still in his third year.

Dominic entered the Transfiguration classroom and nodded a greeting to the professor as he took a seat within the room. The professor was quick to announce to the class that they would be transfiguring frogs into grasshoppers, and Dominic thought this a little bit peculiar. Did the frogs even want to be transfigured into grasshoppers? He was sure this wasn't the case and so he did feel a little guilty about practising on these poor creatures. Despite this, he knew that he had to obey the professor if he wanted to at least pass the class. He took out his wand and used the three tap method as instructed to attempt the spell. It took a lot of tries and Dominic ended up with no luck. His sighed, packing his belongings away as he headed out of the classroom at the end of the lesson.
