Third Years, Lesson Six: Registering as an Animagus
Edward would have liked the last lesson to be a fun one, but unfortunately the syllabus hadn't allowed much wriggle room for that. "Good morning third years, now we have a lot to cover for our last lesson so let's crack on." He stated as everyone settled, "Now, all branches of Transfiguration come with their hazards, but Animagus is by far one of the most dangerous. To be successful, you'll need to have a high standard of dedication, skill, intelligence and common sense. It's far from easy, and few witches and wizards succeed."

"It can take years, even decades for some, to master the ability. Everyone is different, and responds to the process in their own way. The training is strict and requires the utmost concentration. The mind is a complex system that you have to learn to take control of in order to master Transfiguration." Edward thought of the student who had approached him for animagus training and how much work she had ahead of her to achieve full transformation. "There have been a great number of people who have tried and failed, even some have gone on to transfigure themselves into an animal with no way to reverse it." There was no telling how many animals in the world right now could have potentially once been people, stuck that way forever. Which was not a thought he'd like to linger on. "Failure is part of the process, something you'll have to deal with if becoming an animagus is your goal. As is the hard work you'll need to put in. Transfiguring yourself into an animal literally means having to transfigure the cells in your body to those of that animal. It takes a lot of effort to make those cells listen to what you're trying to do."

Edward paused so everyone could have a moment to catch up with what he had said, then continued. "Once you successfully become an animagus, you must register with the Ministry of Magic. This is a time consuming process because you'll have to undergo tests about your ability and responsibility. We don't want Animagi using their skills to go unrecognised and break the law. Which is why the registration includes any specific markings or traits of your animagus form so you're easier to identify. Those who wear glasses can find their animal form has ring like patterns around the eyes, for example. Blindness, deafness, limps.." he said, tapping his bad leg, "are all also things that will cross over into your animagus form." He paused again, although perhaps more for himself than for his students. He dreaded giving long lectures as much as he was sure his students dreaded having to sit through them so late in the semester.

"There are more examples of failure than success. For example has anyone heard how one time a boy managed to turn himself into an anteater for a few seconds but faced the repercussions of his failure when he felt the urge to eat insects for the remainder of the week?" Edward told them, deciding on a rather innocent example compared to others he'd heard. "He was one of the lucky ones comparably. Others have become disfigured permanently with some of the features of the animal. Like I told you last week, you do not have control over what animal you might turn into. There's a couple of things that could give you hints about it, but it's never sure until you successfully master the art of becoming an animagus." He finished. "Right, well done for sitting through that, you've all worked hard this term. Once you have your notes down you are free to leave, unless you'd like to stay for a chat." Edward offered them a smile. "My door is always open."

Roleplay the lesson for full marks. Tag @Professor Edward Pirrip if you would like me to interact with your character.

Lumos sat up straighter when the class began properly and he started to take notes quickly, ready to make sure he didn’t miss anything. He wasnt’ sure how animagus transformations were the most dangerous of all of them, but it did intrigue him honestly. He scribbled all of the notes as they came up, wanting to gave all of it for later in case any of it came up in the exam. It probably would, knowing the professor so he liked to have everything there for later. He liked Professor Pirrip but the man could certainly talk. That was a given. Soon the class ended and he quickly packed up to leave.

Lilith was excited for the last lesson of Transfiguration in the semester, though she was mildly sad given it'd be the last lesson of the year in the subject. They'd already touched the subject of Animagus last week and it had really made Lilith feel more drawn to the idea. She'd also been given some homework by the Transfiguration professor during their chat in his office, which Lilith was still well in the works of doing. After all she wanted to do it as well as possible, which meant putting thought into it. Sitting down Lilith gave a few smiles as a hi to her friends and focused on the professor who began talking more about Animagus related things. The Ravenclaw began taking notes at the very beginning, now that she was trying to become one herself every bit of information regarding the process mattered.

Though the talk of the dangers of the process were far from comforting, it did very little to deter Lili's want to go through with it herself. Sure it was a dangerous process but there was great reward at the end and if you did it under someone else's supervision at least you wouldn't be completely alone on the journey. That had to count for something, so even though it all sounded very unsettling Lilith trusted herself and her Professor enough to not be scared away from the process by the dangers. It was also very interesting how for example glasses could be seen in ones animal form as rings around the eyes, a dog with circles around its eyes sounded cute.

The example of failure that Professor Pirrip decided to bring up made Lilith feel a little queasy. She couldn't imagine wanting to eat insects for a week straight, though her grandmother had said some of them were nutritionally rich or something, still she wouldn't be eating those.... Hopefully.... Soon enough the class came to an end and as Lili packed her things up she felt a little sad that she'd have to wait a long while before attending Transfiguration lessons again, but it wasn't like she wouldn't have a lot to think of about the subject in the meanwhile.

Eli knew this was the end of the semester but that didn’t mean he was going to slouch either, he wasn’t going to start taking it easy, not in this class at least. He let his mind fill in the blanks a little as Professor Pirrip launched into his animagus lecture, the last one for the year unfortunately, but Eli didn’t mind, because he was doing his best to keep everything sorted in his head, having some time away might even be a good thing, though he couldn’t say that was true for sure. He took notes, especially the part about mistakes that were irreversible, it was a hard branch of magic after all, so he wasn’t surprised about that. The risks weren’t putting him off, he was more determined than ever to achieve his goals.
