Gregory had been struggling, though really, that wasn't anything new. It was just now, even after him telling someone and trying to get it to work, he was having issues. He didn't have an alarm, and the boys getting up didn't wake him up, and they were still a little frosty towards him. He raced to the great hall and was relieved that there was still food to be had. He was struggling with the sign language book, having never been particularly good at learning, and doing it on his own was hard. he just didn't want to ask anyone else, because he knew no one else would. He as cursing himself in his head, cursing the loss of his hearing, just how difficult it all was. He was cursing even Cassius a little in his head, but without really cursing the why.

Styx normally had his meal and tea after the crowd had dispersed. He finished his meal and had his tea when his onyx eyes caught the student that arrived a bit late. Normally, he would not care, but this was a student that failed Transfiguration. If his memory serves correctly. He likely should not have used his special ability, but he could not resist to see why this boy was failing so much. Loss of hearing. That made him wonder how long that had been going on. Styx got up from his seat, and approached the Hufflepuff table. He even saw a name that made him approach the boy and put a knee on the bench. He knew that clearing his throat won't catch the boy's attention, so he just gestured his gloved hand to get the lad's attention. One way to get him to hear what he was going to say was by putting thoughts into his head. Although, perhaps a note would be better. Styx taught deaf students before, so he knew how to talk to them. Just not newly deaf students.

Gregory was a little startled, having not heard the man approach. He flinched away and then looked up, his cheeks reddening in embarrassment at who it was. Gregory had failed this man's class, failed it pretty badly. He gave a little nervous expression, unsure what the man was doing here, why he was in front of him. "Sorry I'm late professor, slept in," he said, using what had actually happened to him, to try to explain why he was eating so much later than he probably was supposed to. But the food was still there, so he knew he wasn't too too late. He didn't, in his excuse mention that he didn't and couldn't hear his alarm, and that his relationship with the boys in his dorm was so bad that despite them now knowing, they weren't likely to help him.

Styx knew better than to trust that boy's speech. He knew lies just by looking at them. He shook his head, conjured a sheet of parchment and used his wand to write out a message. 'Don't lie to me.' He figured that would bring a message across for a second, and then he wrote out another one. 'You were cussing out my grandson in your mind. Is he responsible for your hearing loss?' As always, Styx was straightforward. He was just guessing at the timing, since even he did not know everything his family was up to.

Despite what the note said, and the fact his mind thought of the fight which had caused this, he knew he was going to lie. "No, he's just a jerk," Gregory replied quietly, avoiding meeting the man's eyes. It didn't matter if he was found out, or if this man didn't believe him, he just wasn't going to say it. He knew if he did and Cassius found out, then he'd be in trouble. "It's fine, sir, I'll work on it," He said, hoping that would get the man to leave.

Styx figured that he would lie. Of course he would. He knew for a fact that his grandson was responsible, but Gregory was not going to the headmaster for it. So, in a way, Cassius should be indebted to this lad in more than one way. He wrote down another note, 'You will need to learn to communicate. Since he is responsible, I'll have him teach you sign language. He would not dare go against my word once I tell him what to do.' Gregory had no reason to believe him, but as long as Styx ordered it, his family had no choice but to obey.

Gregory felt fairly sure that Styx immediately clocked his lie, but the man didn't say anything, he looked down at the note and felt a mixture of relief and anger. That of course, Cassius would be picked to help him with the one thing he needed. He wanted to learn sign language but had been having difficulties with it, another person would be annoying. "Okay," he agreed, because he doubted this man would let him not agree, and he didn't know anyone who could speak sign language. "Thanks," he said, he couldn't exactly not be polite.
