Jessica flounced into the Great Hall, her eyes flicking to the Gryffindor table to see her sister give her a small wave. Sticking out her tongue, Jessica continued walking with a small wave of acknowledgement to Taylor. As she reached the front, Jessica could feel many eyes on her, so in a self-conscious movement she flipped her hair over her shoulder. On the outside, she looked the definition of confident, but on the inside there was an essence of worry. I hope I look good for this. Jess said to herself, smacking her lips together to even out the gloss that tinted them.
As people were getting called up to be sorted, Jessica examined them, assessing whether they are worthy of her time or not. She looked to either side of her, noting a few people whispering to each other. How have they made friends already? She wondered with an inward roll of her eyes. Jessica had been in a compartment by herself on the train, no way would she share. She didn't understand how people could already be talking to each other like they've been buddies for ages. It took Jessica some time to make friends, even then she only liked a select few. Letting out a yawn and shifting her weight from one foot to the other, Jess wished her sorting would go faster. Her feet were starting to get sore and the more she waited the more nervous she got about where she would be placed. She knew it didn't matter, as long as it wasn't Hufflepuff. Her Mum had been a Gryffindor and her Dad had been a Slytherin. Taylor was a Gryffindor, but Jessica didn't know if she could live in the same part of the castle as Taylor. She could barely stand living with her on the holidays, let alone at school as well.
"Jessica Mercer."
Jessica's attention came back to her and she took a step, walking through the slight parting in the crowd as people realised she was the one who had been called. Letting out a small breath she sat down, flicking her hair once more as she did so. She grumbled slightly as the mouldy old hat was placed on her perfectly straightened hair, but she dealt with it. I will only have to put this thing on my head once in my life, I'm sure you will live Jessica. She told herself firmly as she waited impatiently for the hat to give its verdict.
"Don't like me on your head, do you? Well then I'll just take my time, thanks. How are you today? Nervous I see. Tut, tut. Nothing to be nervous about, my dear. Only hundreds of children watching you while you sit up here looking like a fool and I talk to you inside your head. I'm quite well, by the way. I love today. All the other days I'm on a shelf somewhere. Not today. No-sir, not today. Of course, I could do without all you whiney kids acting like I'm diseased. If it weren't for me half the wizarding world wouldn't be what it is today. If it weren't for me Harry Potter couldn't have defeated Voldemort! So don't act like I'm something you can toss aside. No, I'm quite important and you should be honoured that I'm in your head right now. You should clean up your thoughts, once in a while, too. Geez, kid. You're eleven. Now, I guess I can sort you - can't I? Alright. SLYTHERIN!"
