If only the ground would eat him alive. Pip desperately tried to hid behind a taller boy as the line shuffled into the massive hall, a lump riding high in his throat. He could feel his palms growing clammy and his face turning a bright red as hundreds of students turned to stare at him. No one else. Him. He could feel their gazes piercing his face and torso, scrutinising every inch of him. He tripped on the hem of his oversized robes (big for growing space, his mother told him), almost sending the line tumbling like dominoes and earning himself a hostile glare from the lad in front who, quite frankly, looked as though he'd just stepped out of a boxing ring, with a big, thickset torso and puglike face.
Pip quickly lowered his gaze to the ground, shoving his hands into the pockets of his robes as he fiddled with the fabric. Unlike the goliath in front, he was a skinny, short thing with a small, pinched and pale looking face. His feet were just a little too big, just like his ears poking out from his brown hair, and his mother had insisted on giving him a bowl cut rather than paying for a barber and it made him almost look like one of those medieval monks, minus the bald patch. At least the fringe covered his grey eyes, so they couldn't see his fear, Pip thought, mind flashing back to reruns of David Attenborough and predator prey relations. If this was a herd of wildebeast and the older students were predators, he was the spindly baby wildebeast with a big sign over his head flashing 'eat me!'.
Pip shook his head, forcing himself to focus on the floor and suppress the pounding of his heart. It was no good. His heart refused to obey him and instead jumped up into his throat when to his horror he realised they were calling out names. What for? He'd been too busy thinking about not thinking about the eyes to pay attention to the instructions. But he didn't want to poke out his head and see. "Downing, Phillip" Oh blast alphabetical order. And blast them for using his full name. Pip could feel his body shaking as he forced himself out of the line and half walked, half ran towards the front of the hall. As he moved, he could hear people muttering and he was never as relieved as when he sat down on the indicated stool and his sight was stolen from him by a large, old, slightly smelly (but not unpleasantly so) hat. It covered his eyes and most of his face, so he couldn't see the crowd anymore, though what it was supposed to prove, he didn't know. What if it was some kind of test that he was going to fail because he didn't listen to the instructions properly? What would his mother say? Well, she'd be disappointed at any rate, whether he'd passed or failed. What would his Uncle say? Pip felt his stomach curl. Please don't let me fail this test! he begged the hat, as if somehow it would drop all the answers into his head and he'd suddenly know what to do. It was a hat. It couldn't help!
"This isn't a test. Couldn't possibly be a test. Everybody just goes where they belong. You, for instance, belong in HUFFLEPUFF! - Does that mean you passed?"
