At the beginning of every year, someone always had to mention how small the first years were. Students and staff alike were guilty of this remark. Gabe rolled his eyes every time- what did they expect eleven-year-olds to look like? Nonetheless, when he found himself standing in front of Hogwarts New Zealand's newest students at the train station, the headmaster was taken aback by their height. He could've been gathering together a sea of goblins (or rather, part-goblins.)
After introducing himself, Gabe lead the masses away from the station, out of Brightstone, and across the lawn. The castle and grounds were quite a sight, even for old-timers like Gabe. He approached the stairs to the entrance hall and hollered for everyone to follow. He had to remind them out of necessity- it wasn't fun chasing down first years who felt like they had free reign of the school.
Before opening the doors, the headmaster turned to the group again. "When we enter the Great Hall, I will call each of you to the front by name. When your name is called, come forward and the Sorting Hat will decide which house you are to be placed in. Once the hat has made its decision, you will join your new housemates." Gabe grinned, adding, "You'll know who they are."
The doors swung ajar with a wave of his wand. He led the first years into the hall. Older students were waiting at their respective tables, no doubt famished after the train ride. Staff members watched from the front of the room. With his robes lapping at his ankles, Gabe walked to the stool, sweeping the Sorting Hat from its resting place. With a flick of the wrist, he'd conjured a list. He called out the first name and watched as the student moved forward. The Hall was saturated with excitement; one could practically swim in it.
