Alicia stood at her podium as everyone muttered excitedly. She smiled at the young students that filed in the back of the room and stood before the stage. Nodding encouragement, Alicia gave a wink then raised her hands in the air.

"Welcome new students!! It's great to see all of you! I'm sure you're excited to begin so..." she waved at the door way at the side of the room and a small wooden stool and an old witches hat flew in and landed softly in the center of the stage. "..without further ado, the Sorting Hat!!"

With many shocked sounds from the new students, the old witches hat sprang to life and split open just at the brim, making it appear to have a mouth.

(((After the Sorting Hat says it's poem, this is what you do (unsorted students):
1. RP walking up to the stage and placing the hat on your head. Make sure you include your thoughts, fears, etc. You can also RP Alicia Barker (Headmistress) calling your name and placing the hat on your head

2. After you've posted, the Sorting Hat will edit in it's post with a short RP and telling you which house you've been sorted into.

3. I will then send you a message with your house passwords and your classroom passwords. Of course, YOUR classes won't start until September 8, so don't start posting now! :D

Let's get started!!

It comes but once, but once each year,
When, I, the sorting hat appear.
I appear to sort the latest batch,
To look within and find a match.
To seek the person who does reside,
Beneath the skin, deep down inside.

Rest assured, I do take care,
To avoid mistakes and always be fair,
Because I know my duty is very great,
The decisions I make affecting fate.
So do not approach with a sense of fear,
Embarrassed when seated upon your rear.
And when I’m placed upon your head,
Your thoughts should not be full of dread.
Approach with confidence, pure and true,
Give me the chance to honour you.

Those who step forth brave with pride,
Likely in Gryffindor they will reside.
Fire and Lion, scarlet and gold,
A house of friends, strong and bold.

Hard working kids who value fair play,
May find that Hufflepuff is where they stay.
The Earth and Badger, yellow and black.
Loyalty and tolerance, keep them on track.

Creativity and intelligence will help some soar,
Above the rest to Ravenclaw’s door.
Air and Eagle, bronze and blue.
The wisdom to make dreams come true.

And finally those, resourceful and cunning,
Ambitious and powerful are in the running.
They’ll join the house of silver and green,
Where water and serpents stage the scene.

Now, one last thing, please take heed,
Here is some advice that you may need.
This school has grown in a short time,
So have mistakes and heinous crime.
A challenge to all present, to look within,
No matter the house I've placed you in.
To do your best and persevere,
To use your strengths and face your fear.

The time has come, no more delay,
I call you forth, come on, let’s play

Patricia waited in the crowd of all the other unsorted pupils, not sure how to feel. While she looked around in amazement at the Great Hall she heard her name been called out.

Slowly she made her way to the front of the crowd and sat on the small stool.

As the Headmistress set the hat on her head, she started to feel very nervous but excited, knowing that she was only moments away from been sorted into the house which she would the next couple of years in.

She looked over the rest of the hall, with students young and old looking at her. All that was going though her mind was, "Please don't let me be in Slytherin, please, please, please."

"Slytherin? No! You don't belong there at all, you care far too much for others. With your kind heart I'd place you best in HUFFLEPUFF!"

Belle stood in the middle of the crowd of puzzled and amazed students who awaited there name to be called. Belle looking around the huge room heard a voice call her name "Alcina, Belle" She was one of the first to be called. Being an only child she didn't know what to expect. She managed to make her way to the front of the crowd who had eyes only for her and the hat perched upon the stool. She walked up the steps hands quivering in her pockets, she sat upon the stool and waited for the headmistress to place the wise hat on her head.

Belle's hands started to sweat and her stomach felt like it had a whole flight of butterflies flying around it. She just hoped the hat wouldn't take long...........

"Hmm, you're a little more difficult. But you're a lot braver than your letting on. Yes, courage is deep within you. You'll do best in GRYFFINDOR

Melody was crowded in the middle of a big group of first years, very excited about being Sorted. As she listened to the Sorting Hat sing his song she couldn't help but grin a big silly grin. Excitement grew and grew inside her, until the names being called neared the M's, when she started to get nervous. Suddenly Headmistress Barker called "Melody Johnson" And she walked towards the kind looking woman and the sorting hat with red cheeks and a big grin.
As the sorting hat was placed on her head, she smoothed down her plaits and her brown eyes shone as she thought "Hello" to the hat. She had read about him and how he could read what each student was thinking, and could tell which house they belonged in.
"I don't really mind which house I'm in, just please not Slytherin" She thought again, in her opinion she really didn't belong there. As she waited for the hats verdict she bit her lip, looking out at the sea of students in the Great Hall.

"Not Slytherin? You're sure? Well then.... You'll do quite well in GRYFFINDOR.

Alyssa folded her arms against her chest and she waited for her named to be called. At least a dozen other students have been sorted already, and she was getting impatient.

"Alyssa Snow!" A smile made it's way onto her face when her name called out.

She gracefully made her way up the steps and carefully sat down on the wooden stool. As the headmistress placed the hat onto her she felt butterflies begin to flutter around inside her stomach. Alyssa knew her fate would be decided here. She just prayed she get into Slytherin like she wanted.

'Here we go.....'She braced herself for the sorting hats answer. She felt pride well inside her stomach when she noticed the entire room looking at her. She liked getting this attention.

"Well, there's no arguing there. Your will to win will definitely help you fit in perfectly in SLYTHERIN"

Aaron was excited, as all the other first years were, as they waited huddled together in a big group, to be sorted.
After listening to the Headmistress's speech and the Sorting Hat's song, Aaron grinned as he listened to names being called, then his stomach tightened as he heard "Aaron McClusky".
With a nervouse grin to Headmistress Barker, he took a seat on the three legged stool and allowed her to place the Sorting Hat on his head! He couldn't believe he was actually there, about to be sorted!
He wasn't sure what to think as he waited for the Sorting Hat to speak, and so grinned out at all the student's in the Great Hall instead.

"There's only one house you could belong to, with your noble air and courageous heart you belong solely to GRYFFINDOR!"

When he finally heard his name called.Théodore snorted and shoved his way past the other students. He gace the headmistress and sly smirk before sitting down on the stool and waiting for the hat to be placed on his head.

"I'd better get Slytherin, or I'll never hear the end of it from my father!' He thought darkly. When he felt the hat placed on his head he tensed. It felt weird....to fiinally become sorted.

"Well, there's no doubt about you either. You needn't worry about your father, you belong in SLYTHERIN"

"Paramore, Luna!"

Luna slowly walked up to the front and put the sorting hat on her head. The brim of the large hat flopped over her eyes obstructing her vision. She didn't know wether this was a good thing or a bad one. She had no set house she was rooting for. I really don't have the qualaties for any of them...I'm not cunning... I'm a bit intellegent I suppose...I'm nowhere NEAR nice enough to be a Hufflepuff...I'm not all that brave either...So to you sorting hat...If you see I don't have any distinct house qualities just stick me in Ravenclaw with my sister... she thought, she took deep breaths as she waited for its answer...Her knees shaking a bit.

"Oh, but I do see distinct house qualities. You are wise beyond your years, much like your sister. The only place you belong is RAVENCLAW."

Standing in the crowd with the other unsorted students was sort of boring for Henri. He was tired of waiting and just wanted to get the sorting over with.

"Henri Russo." He smiled and shoved his way to the front and and up the steps. He sat himself down on the wooden sorting stool and willed himself to relax.

"I really do hope I make it into Slytherin. I don't even think I could possibly qualify for any of the houses anyways.'

The hat was carefully placed onto Henri's head and for some reason Henri began to feel slightly nervous. This sorting was going to chnage his life forever.

"Cunning would probably be an understatement when it comes to you. Your house, my boy, could only be SLYTHERIN!"

For the first time in Annamarie's life she hated her last name. She waited and waited as the students before her were sorted into there houses. Her stomach was knotting in anticipation. Oh god...oh god she chanted to herself as the line was getting shorter and shorter.

"Annamarie Rousseau" Annamarie jumped when she heard the Headmistress finally call her name. She walked up the steps and perched herself on the seat. I really want to be in Gryffindor...but I guess you know best Mr. Sorting Hat. she thought to herself as the old hat was slipped onto her head. Annamarie shut her eyes tight hearing nothing but pounding of her heart. She waited for the Sorting Hat to tell her where she belonged.

"You seem to know yourself very well. I'd have you in no other house. It has to be GRYFFINDOR."

Dylan had finished the train ride, finished the boat ride, and was now standing in the Great Hall with all the other first years, waiting to be sorted. In his opinion, this was the greatest moment of his life, all the other first years around him looked the same, sweating, and unable to stay still. Dylan definatly couldn't stand still, he was swaying from each foot, waiting for his name to be called.

He could hear his stomach rumble, he hoped he was able to get some food at some point. It looked as if there was some feast about to take place, a nice welcoming.

"Fields, Dylan" Dylan stood still for a moment, and then it clicked that it was his turn. So what did he do anyway, sit on a stool and put a... hat on his head. Although Dylan was a half blood, he had only really grown up as a muggle, and never in his eleven years, had he come across a mind reading hat.

He sat down, and had the hat placed on his head, "So what am I thinking now then?!" Dylan started thinking about his future house, "Okay, please not Ravenclaw, I have a book alergie, not Gryffindor because everyone seems to be going to that house, not Slytherin because I'm only half blood so I will obviously get bullied and not hufflepuff because I'm really not a lovely person" Dylan thought to the hat, hmm looks like they were going to have to make a new house for Dylan, and call it Dylanfin. "Okay maybe a change of tactics!" Dylan continued to think, "I'll fit into Ravenclaw because I'm smart when it comes to the important things, like pranks, I'll be good for Gryffindor because I'm reckless, I will suit Slytherin because I guess I'm arrogent, skeeky and a little too proud and... okay just don't put me in Hufflepuff" Ha, that would be enough for the sorting hat to place him.

Dylan grinned, looking out at the rest off the school. He could just tell he was going to have a good time while at Hogwarts.

"I could see you doing very well in Gryffindor, but with your loyalty and the value you put on family the place for you is HUFFLEPUFF!"

((Hope I didn't go overboard, I just like to write))

As Connar and his fellow first years filed into what they were told before hand was the great hall, of which would be the place their sorting into the four houses would take place, they were dazzled by a magnificent and terrifying sight, hundreds of students were looking their way, as well as older men and women, who Connar figured were teachers and the like. He and his fellow students gathered before a stage when Connar noticed a mid aged women looking at them with a different look then who were to become their fellow house mates, the look this women gave seem to be one of pure joy and encouragement, she looked like a women that commanded respect, that was well deserved. She must be the headmistress Connar thought, thinking back about who's signature was at the bottom of his Hogwarts letter.

As Connar came to the conclusion of her being the headmistress she confirmed his suspicion by speaking up, as only the headmaster or headmistress would at the acclimation of new students becoming part of their school. She welcomed Connar and the others then waved at a door off in the distance of which a small wooden stool with what looked like a very old patched witches hat flew into the great hall and landed upon the stage, he then learned what it was when the women told the new students it was the sorting hat. A hat, you have got to be kidding me, how is that going to help determine where we belong in this school, Connar thought to himself, of which the hat answered without meaning to by its brim opening to form a mouth and started to sing a song about its job in finding the house qualities in new students and placing them appropriately. About what house holds what dear, Gryffindor valuing strong and bold, Hufflepuff valuing loyalty and tolerance, Ravenclaw valuing creativity and intelligence, and lastly Slytherin who value resourcefulness and cunning. As the song ended, the sorting began.

Name upon name was called, and time after time Connar watched his newfound friends go off to separate houses, knowing they would still keep in touch, but it would be a bit different then the ones who ended up in the same house as he. As the headmistress called "Smithly, Connar", Connar stepped up to the stage his feet slightly like rubber and his palms wet with sweat and his heartbeat increasing every passing second. As he sat down on the stool and the headmistress placed the hat upon his head it slid down partially covering his eyes and knocking some of his hair down to where it hung down the length of his face tickling his chin. As he sat there his fears about not being sorted at all and it coming forth the whole thing had been a huge hoax came forth, as well as his thoughts pulsing about his housing placement. Connar's thoughts began to race, From what I have heard individually about each and every house it seems the least likely place for me to achieve my potential is assuredly Slytherin, and the house that I think would best suit me has got to be Ravenclaw. But I guess its up to you in the end Sorting Hat, place me well and place me true so that I don't wander astray or shirk from my academic duties.

"You do seem to have quite a wise quality to you, now you simply need to learn to organize your thoughts, mind and speech to portray that to the world. That'll be taught best in RAVENCLAW!"

Adora listened to the Sorting hat's song intently smiling at the wonder of a talking hat. The song stopped and she listened to the names being called. She was so intranced she barely noticed when her name was called.

"Lafay, Adora." Her name rang out across the Great Hall. Adora felt a small push from behind. She felt a flitter in her stomack as she walked over and sat in the chair. She smiled and felt someone place the sorting hat on her head.

She began to think to herself. Please let me be in Ravenclaw. I know I am smart enough and I will work so hard to prove it to everyone. She repeated that over and over in her head smiling at the Ravenclaw table. Hoping that she would sit with them soon.

"Yes, yes, there's no doubt about it! You belong solely to the house of RAVENCLAW!

((guys, guys, you don't need to respond in seperate posts, rly. =P))

Throughout the train journey to Hogwarts, Angus had felt very relaxed. He'd made new friends, he'd forgotten his worries, he'd felt truly at ease. But now, when he stood waiting for his name to be called by the Sorting Hat. It was embarrassing, standing there waiting to be called while the others sat and watched. At least he wasn't alone, he reasoned. All the other first years were in the same position. He caught his sister's eyes and smiled, but the smile was tinged with bitterness. He knew (or, at least he hoped) that he wouldn't be joining her at the Hufflepuff table.

"Greenwood, Angus!" called the Sorting Hat, and Angus shuffled forward on trembling legs to be sorted. He knew his name would have been called sooner had he resorted to the name he was supposed to be born with, but it didn't matter. As long it was just over and done with.

I wonder what the hat will say... he mused. Definitely not Gryffindor. I'm not brave enough, and I don't think it's the right house for me. Hufflepuff? I'm not kind enough, I'm not as gentle and friendly as my sister. I'd really love to be in Ravenclaw, but maybe I'm not quite smart enough. I wish I was, though. Slytherin wouldn't be all that bad, though, it would give me the chance to prove myself to Grandfather, and to Antoinette. Oh, please, put me in Ravenclaw or Slytherin. Please!

Angus reached the stool and sat down quickly, all too aware of the eyes focused on him. The hat was placed on his head, and Angus closed his eyes, awaiting the judgement of the Sorting Hat.

"I wouldn't call you wise per se, more like cunning. Yes, cunning. And with your will to come out on top you belong to the house of SLYTHERIN!"

Luna walked up to the sorting hat quietly. She knew how scared she was yet she pretended like it was know big deal and managed to let out a small smile as she sat down. She started to wonder how a simple hat could decide what house she would be in. Does this hat have a brain? I must remember to have a copy of Hogwarts, A History owled to me so I can learn more about how this school operates. Okay, stay focused Luna. *sigh* "Please let it be Ravenclaw" she wished.

"You desire Ravenclaw I see. Yes, well, I could see you doing well there. But not as well as you might in GRYFFINDOR!"

"Crysin, Ally." the headmistress called after her. ally walked into the stool and sat on it while the hat was placed on her head. i wish i get the best of it or my parents will be disappointed on me, get me the best house and i'll behave myself for it. she said on her thought, ally closed her eyes for the embark of the words on the hats lips and waited for the decision.

"The best house? Each house is the best for its own reason! The best house for you, however, is SLYTHERIN!"

"Petrescu, Bianca!"

Bianca smiled as she heard her name being called. She bit her lip nervously and walked to the stool. She sat down eagerly and placed the hat on her head. Now she could see her bother who was in Gryffindor more clearly. She smiled at him and he gave her the thumbs-up sign.

Please let me be in Gryffindor. Please let me be in Gryffindor.. Dad probably disown me if i don't get in it..Please! She thought as she closed her eyes and concentrated on the word Gryffindor.

"Your father will love you no matter your house, which is good, because Gryffindor is not where you belong. No, I think that HUFFLEPUFF will do you best."

Isabella smiled happily as she saw her friends being sorted. She felt their happiness with them; Annamarie getting into Gryffindor like she had hoped for, Isabella had no doubt she'd end up there, Angus finally being sorted into a House she hoped he would be happy in and help him find himself, and both the Snows being sorted into Slytherin, she had playfully rolled her eyes at the Sorting Hat's reply to Theo. Finally, she heard "Chaos, Isabella," being called out loudly. Going into the Sorting she had felt sure where she belonged but now that she was here, she couldn't help but be slightly nervous. Then she collected herself, smoothed out her hair and walked proudly to the stool. She allowed whom she could only assume to be the Headmistress put the Hat on her head and then she saw nothing but the black inside the Hat. Ok Hat, if my father is right about my ancestors and my blood, please affirm where I think I go, she thought firmly, almost impatiently waiting.

"Blood and ancestry is very important to you and your family it seems. Well, that pride in where you've come from will certainly help you in SLYTHERIN."

Brandon heard all the names being called and waited as patiently as he could. He turned now and then to look about the huge hall, the place was intimidating to say the least. He noted the four tables belonging to the different houses and wondered which one he would be placed in.
Finally his name was called and slowly he walked forward. He had no idea where he would be going but somehow it didn't bother him in the slightest. The hat was placed on his head. Brandon listened to it mutter and twitch about.
'Come on old hat, what's taking so long? It'll be time to go home at this rate'
Brandons thoughts were as nervous as he was becoming, the hat was indeed taking its time. But perhaps for good reason...

"SLYTHERIN!" The hat spat out moments after hearing his thoughts, the boy had upset the hat and had he not had a duty to the school the boy very well would have ended up in Hufflepuff, the last place he actually belonged.

Laura watched as her fellow first-years were placed into House after House. Would it be her turn soon?

"O'Connor, Laura."

Laura clapped with glee and practically sprinted to the chair. She felt the Hat being placed on her head and waited anxiously for the answer. She looked around at the tables, and was delighted that she would finally be able to call one of the Houses her own.

She hoped she wouldn't be in Slytherin. Merlin knows she would hate that. She wouldn't like Hufflepuff that much either, but she'd manage if she was placed there. Laura had anaylsed her personality before, and concluded that she'd be in Ravenclaw or Gryffindor. Most likely Ravenclaw. She just hoped the Sorting Hat would see it that way too.

Laura scrunched her eyes tight and whispered, "Ravenclaw or Gryffindor, Ravenclaw or Gryffindor..."

"You seem intelligent, though I'm not sure I'd venture to say wise. No, you're very impulsive and you'll do as your heart tells you. I think you'll do best in GRYFFINDOR!

LaCole Brandi. Brandi would be standing near the back of the room waiting for the Sorting Hat to call her name. She would look up when the Hat called it.She would walk up to the Hat and put it on.I would really like to be in Slytherin she thougth to herself but its up to the hat I guess as long as im not in Gryffindor Ill be fine she thought to herself.

"Yes, I agree. SLYTHERIN is very much the place for you!"

"Lafay, Kittie." The headmistress called her name. Nervously Kittie walked up to the stool and put the hat on. Oh god, she thought. Ravenclaw please, please Ravinclaw She crossed her fingers and waited for the reply

"You belong to the house where kindness and caring never goes without notice. HUFFLEPUFF is your true home."
Kittie sighed, acctually almost happy to be in Hufflepuff. Jumping off the stool she ran over to the table and sat down.

Anthony walked into the hall and looked around nervously but was looking forward to seeing what group he would be in. When his name got called he went up and had a seat. When the hat was placed on his head he was hoping to be in Griffindor because that was his parents house

The red-headed girl stood out quite a lot in the small crowd of first years,
she was looking at the floor,
hoping for something good
her stomach turned over and did a little dance,
she looked up,
shirley, stephanie!
merlins baggy pants, this is it!
she sat on the old rickety stool and the headmistress places the shabby hat on her head,
stephanie smiled bravely at all her fellow students,
and awaited the great hats choice.
please not slytherin please not slytherin, anything but slytherin.

..

"You needn't worry about Slytherin, that's the last place you belong. No, you belong to the noble house of GRYFFINDOR."
