Sixth Years: Lesson One

Professor Kalif Styx was aware that Transfiguration was a difficult subject. It most certainly weeded out the weak from the strong. Those that did not pass the OWL would not be allowed to enter under his watch. His onyx eyes loomed over the classroom, before waving his hand to close the shutters to the windows to darken the classroom. He might not teach Defence Against the Dark Arts anymore, but that didn't mean that he would have a bright classroom. He could not tolerate such brightness for too long. He leaned against the desk with his arms folded across his chest as the students entered. His gloved finger tapped his arm as he stared at each teenager for a moment, knowing who they are by just a glance - if only their name. He wouldn't waste his energy to use Legilimency on all of them. Even students had a right to privacy.

Once all the sixth years were settled in, he snapped and the door closed to signal that the lesson was starting. "Welcome to your first NEWT lesson of Transfiguration. As you know, the subject is not to be taken lightly, and you all have done well enough on the OWLs to continue forward. This is the topic for this year." Styx glanced toward the chalkboard and the piece of chalk started to write one single word on the board before dropping, lifeless once again.

Conjuring

"Assuming you are reading the board, you will be learning how to conjure items. Conjuring, by definition, means to summon by or as if by invocation or incantation. You can conjure items that you have vanished, as you should recall from the previous year, or items that you simply want to have at the moment. I will provide an example by conjuring a chair for each of you to vanish." Styx leaned off of his desk to pull his wand from his robes. He non-verbally made enough simple chairs to appear next to the students, so each had one. "For today, you will vanish the chair next to you. If you do not vanish the entire chair, I would think again on whether or not to continue with this course."

Styx had no tolerance to hold hands to assist students. "Next lesson, you will begin your first conjuring spell. Once the chairs are gone, you are free to leave." Styx put his wand away and watched as the students went to work. He made a small gesture with his hand to open the door as soon as the first student was done, so that the rest would follow suit. After this, he would see what the students were really made of.

Savannah had a lot on in the immediacy of the semester beginning, she knew she had quidditch soon and was spending a good amount of time, focused on that. But she also had the duelling tournament, she was getting the right professors to help her, organising the pairings and trying to resist the urge to rig it in her favour. She was getting herself together grabbing books and notes ahead of her classes, knowing that while all the extra stuff was important, what was more important was doing well in her exams.

Savannah walked into the transfiguration classroom and glanced at the professor as the man got started. She liked this professor, and this class. There was no foolishness. The professor just expected them to get things and it was the sort of lesson that she much preferred to the ones from the other professors. She nodded as the professor told them which spell type they would covering in this semester and then the professor told them to practice the spell from the last. She took her wand and then pointed it at the chair. ”Evanesco,” and the chair vanished. She was real happy about that. Savannah headed out of the room.

Fifth year Transfiguration had been difficult, Professor Styx was a demanding teacher and only accepted the best back into his class. Astraea managed to achieve a sufficient grade and was determined to work hard to keep her place in his class. She made her way into his classroom for the first time as a sixth year and settled into her seat. Professor Styx informed them that the subject they would be covering during the year was conjuring. Sensing the type of lesson it would be Astraea took out a roll of parchment and started taking notes as he gave them more detail about what conjuring was and some of the things they would be doing during the year. Once the lesson was over Astraea packed up her notes and made her way out of the classroom.

Having others in the school know about his lack of hearing was one thing, he hadn’t yet told his parents, so he hadn’t gone home. He knew he couldn’t do that the next break, but he’d be seventeen by then, or almost, maybe it was time for him to leave. He had been adopted in the first place, he was sure that their kindness would end when he was finally of age, and that was sooner in the magical world than the muggle. Gregory packed up the things he had, making sure that he had everything, making sure that he had all of the pieces he needed and then headed out of the dorm.

Gregory walked into the transfiguration classroom, sure that it was a mistake for him to even bother trying with this class, but he was a little limited in what he could do given all that had happened with his OWLs. He looked at th eprofessor and the board, nodding, at least with it on the board, he was able to know what the subject was. He watched as others moved, and then noticed they were vanishing chairs. Gregory took his wand and pointed it at the chair, ”Evanesco,” but it took him most of the lesson to get it to vanish and he left the room without a glance at the professor.

There is a strange chill in the air as he steps into Professor Styx's transfiguration classroom, and honestly he isn't sure if it's just in his head or if it's something that is actually real. He doesn't mind the dimness so much, it's almost comforting really, it's almost a respite to get away from all the brightness that he soemtimes feels leaves him exposed to other people. As he takes his seat, he tries not to shrink at the shrewd manner of the man about to teach him for this semester. He has not had much chance to interact with him, since he hasn't had him for any lessons up to this point, and being a new student this years means ha hasn't had him in previous years either, but he remembers why his mother has said about him and honestly that is almost enough on it's own to know he's not the kind of person to be messing with. He feels like maybe the professor just knows things and that's really sort of terrifying.

Elio's back straightens when the professor snaps the door closed and announces the beginning of the lesson, determined not to show any weakness. He's familiar with most of the theory they would be working on this semester but hasn't had a whole host of success with the practical side of things. He focuses, watching the professor's wand movements obsessively, making sure he notes every flicker and curve just in case any of it is important. He doesn't want to just know the basics, he wants to understand it. He takes a deep breath, Styx makes this look a lot easier than it probably is and he's annoyed he probably won't get this immediately, like he wants to. He takes a moment to centre himself, and then "Evanesco." he's surprised that the chair vanishes immediately, but he needs to practice it for the rest of the lesson before he's able to do that again.

Anisha headed into the Transfiguration classroom for the first time this semester, curious to see what it would be like in her sixth year. She knew Professor Styx and was slightly intimidated by him, but she was also sure he could teach them a lot, which she appreciated. The professor welcomed them to the NEWT course and then told them they would be focusing on conjuring this semester. It excited Anisha, as it was something she had longed to learn for a long time. Their first assignment was to repeat some stuff from last year, which was vanishing. They had to vanish the chair next to them, and Anisha felt ready to prove herself. She managed to vanish the chair on her second try and she was a little frustrated it hadn't been her first. At least she had managed it, though. She was excited to learn what they would do next lesson, and left the classroom when they were dismissed.

Leah felt like the year was going by too fast. It was already the second semester and while her holiday hadn’t been awful she was glad to be at school. She wanted to enjoy her time here before she had to go back. She took her seat and got ready for the day’s lesson. While she didn’t love Transfiguration the way she liked other classes she was looking forward to the challenge the subject provided. Like the challenge of seeing notes on the board when the professor kept the room so dark. But she listened as they went over the basics of conjuring and they were even given a chance to practice. With a new chair in front of her she got out her wand, ready to work. It was harder than it seemed to make a chair vanish but finally, once the lesson was nearly over, she blinked and suddenly it was gone. Relieved to finally be successful she quickly packed up her things to leave.
