Sixth Years: Lesson One

Professor Nakamura was dressed tidily and neatly for his first class of the year. Clean, pristine robes and neatly combed hair. He waited patiently as the students entered the classroom, smiling at some of them in greeting, but also fiddling with his notes one last time.

“Welcome to sixth year astronomy,” he said in greeting as they all settled in. “My name is Professor Nakamura and I will be taking your classes in astronomy until you graduate. I hope we get along,” he said with a broad, friendly smile.

“Now, for our first class we will be delving into the subject of light. We all recognise light – but in this case we will primarily be thinking about this in the context of stars, which emit light.” He paused, making sure everyone was keeping up. “Light is a type of energy, and not all light is visible to the naked eye. For example, our bodies give off heat. This is called infrared, and is not something we can see but is a subsection of light nonetheless. Before you are some instruments that can see these frequencies – ah, light comes in frequencies, you see – of infrared. Please look through them and notice the different tones of light. Some are cool blues and purples, whereas your bodies will be more of a red and yellow.” Professor Nakamura waited while the students used the instruments, walking around the class and keeping an eye on the students, making sure they enjoyed themselves but didn’t get too silly.

“For homework, please look up the electromagnetic spectrum to get a better idea of the sorts of light we mean. Looking forward to seeing you all next week, class dismissed.”

Emmanuel was ready for his sixth year, going home had been fun and interesting, but his grandparents who had always wanted Emmanuel to do certain things, were keen that he try his hand at being an animagus, it was something that a lot of his cousins had done, but he was not that interested in it. He didn’t think there was merit to him doing it. He was happy to do the things he wanted, having his little history club, having his friends, spending time with Kyon. Those were all much more worth his brain energy and time. He was getting himself together for the day, grabbing notes and books that he would need and then headed out of the dorm room and to his first class of the day.

Emmanuel walked into the astronomy classroom and glanced to the new professor they had. He seemed pretty interesting. Emmanuel sat down and took out his notes, pleased that they were just getting straight into it. He liked just getting straight into it. Emmanuel took his quill and began writing down what the professor was saying about light. He was fascinated by the subject matter. Emmanuel took notes from what was said until the professor wrapped it up. He wrote down what the homework was and then headed out of the room.

Michael was a little surprised to see a new Astronomy professor, but Professor Nakamura seemed nice. Ordered and tidy, which Michael could appreciate. He liked Astronomy well enough, it wasn't necessarily something he was that interested in and couldn't see himself pursuing beyond school, but it was a bit more grounded (ironically) than his other subjects. It was nice that Professor Nakamura had tools for them to see the different types of light, and Michael was a little weirded out but impressed seeing the different ways light was emitted. He didn't really think about humans giving off light, but he supposed they did after all. He made a note of the homework and thanked the professor before heading back to his dorm.
