Sixth Years, Lesson Five

James couldn’t believe how quickly the semester was going, they soon found themselves in the penultimate week of classes, the students he was about to see would only have the normal end of year exams but his other classes would have to sit their O.W.Ls and N.E.W.Ts. He almost felt as nervous as they did, he might have only taught them for a single semester but he felt like their results would be a reflection of him. Rightly, or wrongly.

The sixth year students made their way into the classroom and once they had taken their seats James waved his hand with a flick of his wrist and the door closed with a soft thud. “Welcome back. I hope you’re all well rested because we’ll not be wasting any time today, wands at the ready and I do hope you all practiced,” James raised his wand above his head with a flourish and the desks were moved to the edges of the classroom, reasonably gently as not to disturb anything left on them.

“Pair up, you’ve all been here long enough to know how this works, one of you will use a shielding charm, the other will attempt to stun, I don’t want to hear any incantations from any of you,” James looked around the room, he looked for nervous faces as they would be the ones he kept an eye on. “Remember, you need clear minds to cast a non-verbal spell, leave everything else at the classroom door and we can begin,”

James set them off to work, he moved through the classroom keeping an eye on any student he had pegged as looking nervous and casting a quick glance on the students he had expected to do well. Overall, he wasn’t terribly disappointed which was a positive feeling. As he drew the class to an end he felt proud of his students efforts, some of them had work to do it was true, but they had all come so far and that was worth celebrating.

“You’ve done well today, you should be proud of your efforts, there’s no homework for tonight but I do encourage you to go away and continue to practice non-verbal magic with the basic Lumos and Nox,” His lips split into an uncontrollable grin as he said the names of the spells. “Sorry, my twin boys are named Lumos and Nox so that was quite amusing to me, anyway class dismissed,”

RP the lesson. If students wish to practice non-verbal spells outside of lessons feel free to link me to threads doing so for extra credit. Simple spells only, any boneheaded attempts will result in point deductions and detentions.

Having focused on his studies for most of this week, mostly out of an effort to get Mikael to crack open a gods damned book, and with Hinata in the same boat, there wasn't much going on for this week, other than just generally spending time with his friends or going back over a lot of the material they'd been learning for the year. It's a bit weird for him now, mostly because he hadn't learned it with everyone else in the school, and most of what he knew was self taught, but he generally looked forward to it anyway, and with the duelling coming to an end, (he was pleasantly surprised by the results even if he hadn't beaten Anisha) there wasn't much more he had to look out for. He couldn't believe the end of the school year was fast approaching and it was nearing the time he'd have to start making decisions, like what the heck he wanted to do with the rest of his life. The answer of course was that he had no idea, though he did sort of think he wanted to stay in New Zealand - he supposed he would see soon enough depending on his NEWT results. Maybe they would tell him what he should do.

Elio smiled as Professor Cade's unexpected grin broke through his usual professionalism - it made him feel a little less tense about the task ahead. Non-verbal spells continued to be a bit of a thorn in his side and with his thoughts now dwelling a lot on his new brother Luca, it was probably going to continue on like that too. It had all been a bit of a hit-or-miss for him, and the idea of being able to use magic without having to actually say the words was pretty cool, and the fact he didn't know how to do it kept causing him more anxiety than it probably needed to. There was a lot of pressure to get it right, mostly from himself but it was still pressure. Mikael had been trying to help, and mostly he was succeeding, but he could only do so much as a fifth year, which meant he didn't officially know anything more than Elio, nothing he could use at school to help him in any case. He paired up quickly, his determination to block anything that came his way clearly showing on his face. He was focused, or as trying to be, and he gripped his wand tightly. His first attempt at a wordless protego fizzled, but he managed to take a steadying breath, and focused on what he wanted to happen - his second try was slightly more successful and the shield came into shape, very thinly, before disappearing again. He couldn't help the smile on his face at the success of that - but it still wasn't enough, he needed to get it much faster.

Cassius Styx hoped that the rest of the weeks would go by quickly because he wanted to head home and visit some of his family. And he would like to know how in the world his big sister Lilah got married and pregnant within a few months of meeting her husband - who looked just like his History of Magic professor. It was eerie. At least he did not have to worry that his brother-in-law would not be working there. He hated that idea. Cass shoved that thought to the side as he finished packing up his belongings for his next class. He had a lot to do, and not a lot of time to do it in. He did a quick look in the mirror and then he was ready to go.

Cass walked in the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom, and took his seat. Professor Cade let them know that they would not be wasting time, but to stand up as the desks moved to the side. Cass wondered why he didn't just do that to begin with. Oh well. He paired up with Terror again, and started to practice. Lumos was hard to do. Nox was easier. However, with Stupefy and Protego, neither were coming easy to him. Was it because he had a lot on his mind? Maybe. He managed to get both of them a couple of times before the class was over. But it gave him one hell of a headache.

The year seemed to be going by quickly, which Terror Zhefarovich had no complaints over. He needed to hurry and graduate so that he could go and do his own thing. He yearned to get out there and see the world as he played Quidditch - if any team would want his skills. He thought that he did decently, but he felt that he needed a lot of improvement. Well, practice made perfect. He gathered his bag regardless, nearly forgetting his prefect badge. He could not forget that since he earned it. Somehow. Still baffled him but he would take what he could get. He left the Slytherin dungeon so that he could make his way to his next class.

Terror walked in the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom and found his seat. Terror looked forward to this for a long time, and now they could finally start using their skills. Terror listened to Professor Cade inform them of what they would be doing, and pretty much set them free to work on their nonverbal spells. Pairing up with Cass, Terror got to work. He did go easy on Cass since he managed to get both spells faster than he did, which was lucky that his cousin could duck quickly. At the end of the class, they both had a good handle of it. He grabbed his belongings and left the classroom.
