Valentine's, as usual, had been a huge waste of time for everyone. Rose giving was always just a big distraction while everyone simpered around in some floral popularity contest. What Sydney hadn't been expected was to get a pink rose. Her first thought was that it was a joke rose, like what she'd sent to Eric Holland in the past, but if it was a joke, sending a thank you note with a pink rose wasn't very funny. Sydney had spent most of Valentine's day holed up in her room with the rose, trying to deduce who might have sent it. Could it have been from Samantha? She'd sent Samantha her own pink rose, but hadn't signed it. It had seemed like a knee jerk decision at the time, Sydney hurriedly writing down the poem and submitting it before anyone could see her, but now that she'd gotten her own rose she wondered if she could have signed it and saved Samantha the confusion she was feeling. She'd only really pinpointed her own yearning for Samantha and at the time a poem had seemed like the best outlet. Now, she wasn't so sure. If it wasn't Samantha then who? The last thing Sydney needed was some sappy kid following her around like a lost puppy like Ren did to Samantha.

Sydney had been mulling this all over since Valentine's had ended, frustrated she had no easy way to get answers. She'd gone up to to HM room, hoping for some peace to work on her writing and do some more thinking away from prying roommates, but Sydney faltered to see Samantha was also there, causing her to linger in the doorway. Mind made up, she strolled over, pasting on an air of indifference. "Samantha, did you get any roses last week?" She asked promptly, sitting down and pulling her notebook out.

Samantha hadn't done anything interesting for Valentine's day, other than the fact she did, in fact, send a pink rose to Sydney. She wasn't so sure as to why she had sent a rose to Sydney, to begin with, or right now in fact. Samantha had been confused about her feelings recently, as she wasn't so sure what to do. She knew she liked Ren, but she also slowly realised something about Sydney, but couldn't really figure it out.

Samantha had been in the Hogwarts Monthly room, doing her part in this semester's paper, when she looked up and noticed Sydney was speaking to her and had taken a seat. "Uh, yeah, a few," Samantha says with a smile, as she thought about the few roses she had received. Samantha looked down at her work for a little bit, contemplating if she should ask the same question. "How about you?"

Sydney kept her focus on her notebook as Samantha spoke, though she hadn't really started writing yet. She had to glance up when Samantha said she'd gotten a few roses, feeling her stomach twist sourly. "Who from?" She asked quickly, hoping it wasn't from anyone like Ren. It would just be like him to send Samantha something ridiculous like a rose so she would feel obligated to spend time with him. She stilled when Samantha asked her about her own rose, tapping her quill on her page impatiently, thinking about the pink rose she'd ended up stuffing under her bed so her roommates wouldn't see. "I don't put a lot of stock into roses and stuff. Either you're already a couple and you're just showing off, or you're too much of a coward to say anything to the person you like so you hide behind a dumb note," Sydney said, shaking her head dismissively. "It's not proper romance in my opinion," She added definitively.

Samantha smiled a little about the roses she was given to her. "Just a few people," Samantha says with a shrug, not wanting to reveal anything and wanting to keep in under wraps. Samantha's smile slowly disappeared when Sydney mentioned about the roses, and nodded along slowly. She didn't know what she was feeling, but she started to feel a little dull. "I see," Samantha says with a nod and a small sad smile and went back to her writing for the paper, trying to not let what Sydney said to heart.

Sydney's mouth twisted when Samantha didn't elaborate more on who was sending her roses and Sydney tried not to huff. It didn't surprise her that Samantha would be getting some roses, she was a lot more clever and likable than most of their classmates, but it still bothered her that she didn't know who was sending what. "Hope Ren's not being annoying again," Sydney said with a sniff. If anyone was going to send Samantha dumb roses, it would probably be Ren. "I swear teenage boys send one rose and think you owe the world or something," She said with a dismissively wave of her hand. Not that anyone had ever sent Sydney a rose like that before, but she'd seen it happen. "People should put in some actual effort these days. Where's the intrigue, the romance? What happened to sending people love letters or- Or poems," Sydney said, getting worked up and stumbling as she came dangerously close to being too transparent for a moment, glancing again at Samantha who seemed more subdued than before for some reason.

When Sydney had mentioned about Ren, it had made Samantha think, that she hadn't seen him in a while. She should catch up with him sometime soon. She had always found it cute when she got a gift from him, even though she doesn't really expect it. Samantha's mouth slightly parted when Sydney had mentioned how she hoped than Ren hadn't annoyed Samantha. "Uh... I don't think he's being annoying or anything" Samantha questioned with slight sadness, mostly to herself. She always thought that Ren was always nice to her and liked it when he bought her gifts. It had felt to her that she was appreciated enough sometimes. "The simple things are always mean a lot to me," Samantha says with a shrug and a smile. She felt upset for some reason, and she had no clue as to why she was feeling this way.

OOC: I totally didn't notice it was my turn on this one, sorry!

"You're too nice," Sydney said with a huff. She'd meant it fondly, it was amazing Samantha was as friendly as she was, but it'd come out terse, and Sydney silently cursed herself for stumbling on something so basic as a complement. She always seemed to say the wrong thing around Samantha, it was frustrating. The closest she'd come to really saying how truly wonderful Sam was had been when Sydney had written the poem for her rose, but even now she was too much of an idiot to admit she'd done so. She'd spent time thinking about the pink rose she'd received back on Valentine's as well, fervently hoping it was from Samantha as well, but surely the other girl would have said something by now. Sydney's face felt hot as Samantha talked more about Ren, about how she liked the simple things and Sydney felt even more like and idiot, glaring down at her notebook as she wrote words she was barely paying attention to. "Well, he's definitely simple," She said with a sharp smile, scratching out a word with a bit more force than necessary.
