Yes, you are. We don't police you to ensure you're only ever RPing in one thread at a time.
The thing is, though, that you should always pay attention to the continuity of your threads. Your character can't be in two places at the same time. Also, if you're in two RPs at once (and neither is planned) then in one (that is set to have happened before the other) something happens to your character that prevents the next thread from happening (going to the hospital wing, being caught by a professor, whatever) then the second thread ceases to make sense. So watch out for things like that.
You can have an rp thread at the Three Broomsticks on a sunny morning...At the same time,you can have an rp thread on the dorms on a windy afternoon..
The point Nick wants you to understand is that no matter how many threads you have as long as they occur on different time settings and situations in which they could be connected to each other somehow..
