It was unsurprising that Poppy had only just learned her nephew had a family. Nobody ever told her anything any more. A little bit of self reflection might have revealed the reason for this, but Poppy was too busy and too proud to consider that she might also be as stubborn, self-absorbed, and presumptuous as the rest of her family, or indeed that she might have been projecting a little bit. She had only ever been civil to her brothers and their wives, she was sure. She attended their weddings; she sent cards on their birthdays; she even gave their horrible little children money whenever she saw them. The problem was that her definition of 'civil' didn't strictly align with the one accepted by, well, pretty much everyone else, particularly in that she failed to see any importance in saying nice things. It was all so fake. For instance, nobody thought babies were actually cute, did they? If Thalia was still offended by her calling baby Raylee an ugly grey space fungus over twenty years ago, that was frankly her own problem.

Poppy didn't hate all children. She didn't even hate most children. Just the ones she had to interact with. Even so, she was willing to give them a chance, especially when they shared her blood. Maybe Reuben and Saveli's children would be nice, quiet, and intelligent. Unlikely? Yes. But since Poppy was in England anyway, re-paying a favour for one of her colleagues, she saw no harm in tracking down her nephew's address and paying the family a visit. To be civil.

The farm wasn't in terrible shape. Actually, it was quite a nice plot of land, with a pretty farmhouse at the centre of it. Poppy rubbed her hands together as she waited for somebody to answer the door. She was going to catch her death out here. At least she looked good.
