First Years, Lesson Three: Transfiguration Restrictions and Laws

Edward waited inside the classroom, greeting the first year students cheerfully as they settled. "Good morning! Great to see you all back,"he said with a smile. "No wands today, sorry! We’ve got some theory to cover before the exciting stuff, but I promise it’ll be worth the wait." Ignoring a few groans, he gestured to the board, where the chalk began writing. "Your first year is all about introductions and building a solid foundation. Inanimate to inanimate transfiguration is your starting point, while animate to animate transfiguration forms the backbone for advanced spells like vanishing, conjuring, and eventually human transfiguration."

He paused for those taking notes, then continued. "Human transfiguration, including animagus transformation as you saw in week one, is rare and highly regulated by the Ministry. This school, like Uagadou, is known for training animagi, but comes with responsibility. Here’s a list of transfigurative magic, like animagi and apparition, subject to strict laws." The chalk magically moved to write a new list on the board.

Animagi: Requires a license and is heavily regulated. The Ministry has a list of registered animagi, for safety and identification reasons. Any animagi found to not be on the list faces time in Azkaban prison. Apparition: A license is required to apparate legally. You will learn to apparate in year six, and not a moment before. Invisibility: The Ministry has tried time and again to keep restrictions on the use of invisibility cloaks and spells. Naturally this is the hardest for them to detect, but be aware restrictions do exist and should be researched thoroughly. Muggles: The Department of the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts office, also known as Creation of Dangerous Objects Department, attempts to minimise the number of harmful objects created from muggle items. Sometimes they are successful, sometimes not. Time Travel: This branch is heavily restricted because of the potentially catastrophic consequences. Very few people ever receive permission to travel back in time.

"That's all the time we have for today. Please make sure you have these lists written down, it'll make things much easier! See you all next week."

Freddie wasn't a great writer, but he was so tired today he didn't really care about all the lectures his professors were forcing on him. It was better than trying to cast spells when he could barely keep his eyes open. He knew he was spelling everything wrong, but he didn't really care enough to squint at the board as he took notes. It was good enough. Maybe when he was a bit more awake, he'd see what he could find in the library on animagi. Turning into an animal sounded cool.​

Marina liked it when she could take a lot of notes, or when she could walk away with information she could used to look up even more information. So when she slipped quietly into the classroom, sitting next to one of the boys from her house, she quickly made notes of everything they were going over. She liked having rules and structure she supposed but she didn’t think it had to be quite so tightly regulated, not that she was going to put up a fuss at this stage of her life, sometimes things had to be challenged she thought. She made notes of all the laws and then she felt more prepared. Once the class was over she headed out of the classroom and check out some of the books in the library.​
