First Years: Lesson One

Professor Tobias Blade sat behind his desk, back stiff, hands folded over a mug of tea he’d let go cold hours ago. His robes were neatly pressed but heavy, sleeves rolled back just enough to show wear on the cuffs. When the first-years shuffled into their seats, he didn’t rise immediately. Instead, he watched—tired eyes scanning nervous faces, noting the fidgeting, the whispers, the eagerness hidden beneath layers of anxiety. When the last bag hit the floor and the last cloak was unrumpled, Blade stood. His knees creaked in protest. His expression was unreadable—but not unkind. With a flick of his wand, chalk rose to the board, scrawling in tight, blocky script: PROF. T. BLADE.

"Right then. Good morning." His voice was deep, worn, but warm at the edges. "I’m Professor Tobias Blade. I’ll be your Charms professor until fifth year—long enough to make mistakes, and long enough to learn from them." He looked around the room again, slower this time. "I’ve been teaching longer than I care to admit. I've raised children who don’t write back anymore, and taught students who still do. So let me say this now—whatever you’ve heard about this class or this castle or even about me—none of it matters half as much as what you do with your time here."

He crossed his arms, not in defiance but in thought. "Let’s start simple. Stand up, tell us your name, your house, something about yourself, and what kind of wand you carry. And speak up—mumbling won’t help when your spell ricochets off a bookshelf." As the students responded, Blade nodded along—occasionally offering a quiet grunt of approval, or a raised brow at the more dramatic wand pairings. He didn’t write anything down, but it was obvious he was memorising everything. Names, wood types, core materials, which ones were proud, which ones were scared. He saw it all.

When the final student sat down, he exhaled through his nose and walked to the front again, tone softening just a touch. "Your wand is an extension of you. It’ll respond to your moods, your doubts, and your choices. You mistreat it, it won’t wait for permission to show you what that means. But if you take care of it—trust it—it’ll do the same for you." ]He leaned on the edge of a desk, posture relaxed but still commanding. "Charms are spells that change what a thing does—not what it is. You want your quill to dance across the page, that’s a charm. You want the quill to become a frog? That’s Transfiguration. Entirely different kind of mess."

He pushed off from the desk, pacing gently now, hands behind his back. "Each week, you’ll be assigned a chapter. I’ll review the main points in class, but I expect you to read. Not skim. Not panic the night before. Read. If you’re struggling, you come see me. There’s no shame in needing help. There’s only shame in pretending you don’t." Then, he drew his wand—no flourish, just instinct—and said, "Expecto Patronum." From its tip emerged a large, silver mountain dog, strong and silent, with kind eyes and a steady gait. It circled the class once before fading to mist. Blade didn’t explain, but the moment lingered all the same.

"Next week, we begin with Lumos—the light-casting charm. I know, it sounds basic. It isn’t. Some of you will get it right away. Others will wave your wand like you’re conducting an orchestra and wonder why nothing happens. That’s alright. You’ll get there." He returned to his desk and sat down with a quiet sigh, gathering a stack of parchment into a tidy pile. "Pick up your reading list on the way out. My office is open after breakfast and again in the late afternoon. You’re welcome anytime—whether you’ve got questions or just need a place that isn’t loud and full of people pretending not to be scared."

With a small flick of his wand, the classroom door creaked open. He looked toward it, then back to the class. "Dismissed. And bring your wand next week—unless you want to be the one in the dark."

Rose was happy to be getting back into the swing of classes, and general routine. She took a seat in her first Charms lesson of the year and paid close attention to the professor and not just because she didn't want to look at Freddie. Unlike DADA, Rose thought the spells they'd use in this lesson would actually be useful, things she'd want to use in day to day life, and casting magic she didn't need to be scared of. She made a few notes as the professor spoke, wondering who his children were he spoke of, and why they didn't talk to him anymore. Rose didn't know who her dad was, nor her mum really. It was just her siblings and mama, ever since they'd been adopted. She'd decided long ago that was all she needed. "I'm Rose Glass," She spoke clearly when it was her turn to introduce herself, "I'm in Ravenclaw," What was her fact about herself? Honestly she didn't know what others in the room would think was a fun fact. She was over trying to pretend to be someone she wasn't, though. She wasn't cool and most people probably knew it. "I think I want to get a pet, but I'm not sure what, so if anyone has any suggestions.. " not that she expected them right now, but she hoped she'd get some inspiration soon. "My wand is.. really long." Over 16 inches in fact, making it quite hard to fit in the pocket of her robes. "I'm not sure about the type of wood but, it's long and really flexible. I like to think it can adapt," maybe in some ways, that meant she could too. She took a seat, remaining quiet for the rest of the lesson.

Picking a desk never got any easier. The one by the door was taken, so Freddie shuffled over to the middle row and sat down. He opened his bag, took out his notebook and pens, tested the pens still worked. He was kinda listening. But mostly he organising his pens - one pile for the good, one for the okay, one for the totally-dried-up. When he was done, he sat back. Slid down a little. Then a bit more. Watching Professor Blade. The teachers here didn't tell him off yet for how he sat, but this was a different one, a new one. He seemed kinda strict. Or just serious. Either way, Freddie's stomach felt tight.

And then he had to stand up. He did, leaning his hands on the table. "I'm Freddie," he said. Professor Blade had told them not to mumble. He tried to speak up. "I'm in Ravenclaw. Um. I play the guitar. My wand is made of... willow, with dragon heartstring." The heartstring bit was a lie. But he wasn't gonna say fairy wing in front of everyone. He sat back down, glancing at Rose. She was trying as hard not to look at him as he'd been trying not to look at her. He was pretty sure. Oh, well.

A silver light suddenly made him look up front again. Whoa. He'd never seen a dog patronus before. He craned to watch it circle the classroom. When was he gonna get to do that? He wanted to make a patronus. Uncle Rudolf said it was super, super hard though, so he'd probably have to wait a few years. Professor Blade must've been really good if he could make one just like that.

Picking up a reading list, Freddie headed to his next class.

Nik dragged her feet into the classroom somehow. She wasn't looking forward to it at all and as she sat at the desk and looked up at the professor she wasn't entirely sure how she felt about him. Once it was her turn to introduce herself, she sighed, standing slowly. "Annika, Slytherin. I don't like mornings, and my wand is Fairy Wing, which makes it deceptively delicate," but sharp in shadow. A bit like herself really. She tucked her wand and herself back into her desk and slumped sort of forward. She'd had enough of introductory classes, she'd done them all semester last time and she didn't really want to do it again. She didn't know why he wanted to know about them because they were hardly going to be friends and he definitely wasn't going to remember them. She looked at the professor with a mildly unimpressed squint. Sure, his Patronus was cool or whatever, but he talked like he was writing a dramatic novel. Nik figured he probably took himself too seriously—like he expected all of them to fall in love with the sound of his voice. Still, at least he didn’t shout, and she had to admit… the bit about wands had sounded sort of true.

James didn’t appreciate professors who talked to them like they were five, but that was how Professor Blade addressed them when he was describing the relationship between their wands and charms. It might have made sense first semester, but they’d all been at Hogwarts for months now, and they knew a little bit about how wands worked. James sat and listened to the professor, whom he was slowly disliking more and more as the lecture continued. When it was time for everyone to introduce themselves, James sighed. In potions, he’d drunk a potion that gave him hiccups, now he was introducing himself to a room full of people he mostly knew. “I’m James Cosgrove, Slytherin, my wand has a thestral hair in and, boy, fun fact, my sister is on the Slytherin Quidditch team, though that’s not really a fact about me, I have a cat though I haven’t seen her for a while,” James listened as other students took their turn. It was incredibly random when Professor Blade stopped mid-point to summon a silver dog from his wand, then continued on as if nothing happened. Was he showing off? For eleven-year-olds? How desperate for attention was he? When the lesson was finally over, he picked up his things and left.

Blade was too close to Cade for Nadia’s liking, and she just hoped no one at school thought she was related to the charms professor. She had enough family with the title Professor; she didn’t need fake ones too. She sat and listened to Professor Blade talk about the spells they would learn during the semester. Professor Blade casting the patronus was random and served no point to the lesson, so she ignored it. When it was her turn to introduce herself, she stood up, “I’m Nadia Cade, my wand is made of Rowan wood and I’m the oldest sister in my family,” Once the lesson was over Nadia packed up her things and made her way out of the classroom.

Gaia stepped into the Charms classroom, noting the male Professor just staring at them. She returned his stare with her own one, calculating and measuring everything he did. He wasn't easily read, she thought, that was okay. She sat down, next to Rose since this was a lesson they had together, continuing her calculating stare for a few more second before lowering it to start doodling on her little sketchbook. She continued on the little drawing of an Augurey as the Professors voice filled the space around her. She listened, not raising her eyes or abandoning the sketch until notes were waiting to be made.

When they were told to stand up to introduce themselves Gaia abandoned her sketch, listening to the others introductions. When Rose introduced herself a small smile graced her lips, she'd gotten the perfect idea. However before she could suggest said idea it was her turn to introduce herself. Getting up the Slytherin glanced around the classroom coolly. "I'm Gaia Athanasiou, a Slytherin as you can tell from my robes." She gestured to her green and silver tie before continuing. "I have five sisters and one brother. My wand is from Hornbeam and has a Fwooper feather core." With that she sat back down and waited for everyone to finish introducing themselves. Then she took notes on the rest of the lesson and worked on her drawing for a bit before ultimately packing up and turning to Rose. "We should go to one of the pet shops in the Harbour or something? I have been thinking of getting a pet too." She suggested with a small smile.

Marina yawned as she sat in the class, mostly because she hadn't slept well the night before. She never did when she was coming off of a holiday or a weekend, it was just a fact for her. Though she wished it wasn't. She rolled her shoulders as she listened to the lecture, not really wanting to dive too deeply into anything mentioned just yet, she would go off and read it on her own. She liked reading though, so that was a plus right? When it was her turn to speak she stood up, smoothing her skirt as she held up her wand. "This is an alder wand with manticore venom." She didn't see the need to give them more details on her wand. "And I'm Marina, Ravenclaw and I like to take notes - a lot of notes."
