First Years Lesson One (Hufflepuff and Gryffindor)

Mallory was both relieved and nervous to be back. Peter was sleeping soundly in the bassinet by her desk, charmed so that the noise of the students wouldn't disturb him. She had set up the classroom again the way she liked, giving it a quick cleaning that morning before arranging her desk. Amara was curled up with Maxim underneath her large oak desk, fast asleep as well (as if she'd gone and spelled all her little minions to rest, when really it had just been a long night) and all of Mallory’s notes and lesson plans were arranged neatly on the desk itself, turned to face out to the rows of seats so she could sit and still supervise her students while being able to watch her son.

She had decorated the desk with a line of flowers, most of them shorter, creating a small barrier along the edge of the desk that she could still see over. She had taken care getting dressed that morning, her light powder blue robes swishing gently around her feet and her dark mahogany hair pulled back in a braided chignon. Peter was thankfully a calmer baby, dramatic when he wanted to be, but fascinated with watching her to the point where she could get ready for the day.

She rose from her desk as the students filed in, smiling kindly as the last of them settled in their seats. She clapped her hands lightly to get their attention, looking over the fresh young faces of the first years. “Dobroye utro, good morning my dears,” She greeted gently, her Russian accent a more subtle but still there. “My name is Professor Mallory Grayveson, and I’ll be your Professor until fifth year,” She raised a hand, the chalk raising to write out her name in an elegant script behind her.

Speaking to the children was very simple, and Mallory found herself relaxing. “I was born and raised in Saint Petersburg, Russia. I have two siblings, and I moved to Arrowtown here in New Zealand when I was eighteen, where I met and eventually married my husband, and we had our son Peter.” She told them, walking slowly back and forth across the front of the room as she spoke, motioning to the baby before turning her attention back to the students. “My dear, would you please start us off by telling us your name, house, and something about yourself, and something about your wand?” She asked, stopping in front of a student and smiling kindly. She listened carefully to all of the given answers, smiling warmly at each student in turn. Her memory was excellent, and she took a mental note of every name and face in her class, and noting their wands. “Thank you,” She smiled warmly at her class.

She moved back to the front of the room, and clapped her hands lightly. “Very good! Your wand is a part of you, an extension of your power and yourself. It’s important that you know about it, that you understand it’s properties and the power it can wield.”

Mallory continued to move, her robes swishing gently along the floor. “A Charm is a spell that adds certain properties to an object or creature. Charms are distinguished from transfigurations in that a charm adds or changes properties of an object; it focuses on altering what the object does as opposed to what the object is.” She explained. “I would like each of you to read the assigned chapter over the week between lessons. I will of course do a brief overview of the relevant chapter at the beginning of each lesson, but it will be much easier for you to take the time to study and understand on your own rather than trying to cram it into a single lesson.” Of course, if they were anything like her brother, and she assumed many of them were, they would wait until the last minute to do their reading.

"We will be learning spells, beginning next week with Lumos; the charm to cast a light from your wand, all the way up to your seventh year where you will progress onto casting your very own Patronus." She continued, pulling out her wand and casting a Patronus as she finished speaking, letting the Sphynx cat wander idly through the air for a few moments before letting it dissipate. “Of course, the more advanced magic will be taught by Professor Haden, to all of you that wish to continue your classes with him.”

Mallory stopped in the middle of the room, smiling fondly at all the children. “That’s all the time we have for today, my dears. Remember to do your reading, I’ve made you all a list of what chapters we’ll be covering this semester. Stop by my desk on your way out to collect your copy. My office is open after breakfast until dinner, if you have any questions about what you’ve read or would like a bit of extra tutoring, feel free to stop by.” She brought her hands together. “Next week we’ll be going over the spell Lumos, and be sure not to forget your wands. Dasvidaniya,” She spoke fondly, and with a flick of her wrist the door opened again and she moved to sit at her desk, passing out the assigned reading and homework list with a smile as the children came to collect their papers before leaving- just in time, it seemed, as Peter was stretching and cooing gently in his rocker.

Peregrine was looking forward to Charms, she was always impressed by the charms her mother and uncle could do and couldn't wait to do some of her own. It would've been nice to use the charm to quiet down her brother as well when he got really annoying - though she knew she couldn't use magic outside of school. Still, she could dream. It was a little bit awkward that the professor had a baby with her, like what if he woke up and started crying? And eleven year olds didn't exactly know how to behave. Peregrine was often an exception rather than the rule, she had learned. But the professor seemed very friendly and nice.

Professor Grayveson, which is what the professor's name was, wanted them to introduce themselves and Peregrine stood up when her turn came up with a awkward little wave. "Er, hello, I'm Peregrine Piper," she started, wondering if she needed to spell it out so nobody else started calling her Penguin. "Or Perry, or Pez, or Rin, or Minnie, whatever works," Peregrine didn't tend to shorten her name herself, but if anyone else did that was fine. Minnie came from her middle name, but she didn't want to bore everyone with too many details. "I'm in Gryffindor and my wand has dragon heartstring in it which fits cause dragons are my favourite creatures." Some days it was chimaeras, though. She sat down, having said more than enough, and listened to everyone else's introductions.

Peregrine made a few notes with her favourite class quill - she had a few quills on hand, thanks to her uncle - and would have to get on to reading the textbook so she was ready for the next lesson. She had attempted to do a couple of the spells already, and Lumos had come in handy for reading under the covers on the first few nights so as not to disturb her roommates. Though she had had a bit of trouble getting the spell going in the first place, so she would have to learn properly from the professor. Peregrine was excited about the Patronus charm even if that was a way off. She thanked the professor for the lesson when they were dismissed and headed off to read the chapter while Charms was still on her mind.

Miles decided he was going to run all the way to charms class, which ended up being a bit of a mistake when he showed up bright red in the face and a little out of breath. He somehow managed to find an empty seat, more or less collapsing into it and resting his face in his arms as he tried to coax the breath back down his throat. He had thought it was just going to be a bit of an extra work-out, but he certainly hadn't expected to be so tired when he showed up to class. He was still huffing just a little when the lesson actually started, desperately trying to control his breathing better to not disturb everyone And he didn't really want to get into trouble for making a disturbance or anything, after all.

Thankfully, he was breathing a little more normally by the time it got around to him to stand up. So, he did, clearing his throat a little. "I'm Miles. Miles Flynn. I'm in Gryffindor and my wand is made of Blackthorn and Acromantula Web. I, er, don't really know much more about it, but the guy who sold it to me said it was a powerful wand." Whether that was actually the case of the guy had just said that to make him feel better, he didn't know. Either way, now he was done he sat himself back down again and listened to the rest of the lesson. As they were finally dismissed, Miles took one of the papers from the Professor on the way out of the door, though simply scrunched it so he could stuff it into his bag, likely to be forgotten about later.

Henri had completely lost track of time, it had only been when he’d stepped back into the common room, that one of the other students had flagged to him that he had a class. He tookt he time to look at what the schedule said he had and then decided based on that whether he was actually going to bother going. He wasn’t going to go if it wasn’t interesting. He knew that the first classes would just be introductions, but perhaps that was worse. He haphazardly put on his uniform and then headed out to class.

Henri walked into the charms classroom, his sister had caught him heading away and dragged him to class, so he found himself there. The professor got started on the lesson, and telling them about her, before making them do the same. Henri stood up when it was his turn. ”I’m Henri, hufflepuff, my mother is the minister, and my wand, it’s meteroite dust core which is good in divination,” he then continue to talk about his wand and the core until the professor had to ask him to stop. He sat down and others went. The professor then told them more about charms, but he wasn’t that interested in it really. He zoned out and then the lesson was over. He packed up and headed out the room.

Angelo entered the Charms classroom, his eyes immediately drawn to the baby sleeping in a bassinet near the teacher's desk. It was unusual but he supposed that if students lived here, then maybe the teachers and their families did too. He took a seat and listened as the teacher greeted them in a language that he did not understand. He got distracted easily by the chalk writing out things on the blackboard that he hadn't really managed to pay attention and suddenly his classmates were talking. One by one. Oh no. Recitation? Why do they do that here? Oh man. Well at least it was only introductions. His name. His section. And his wand? How was he supposed to know what his wand was made of? Did that come with the receipt? He didn't even know they had a receipt. They didn't exactly have a scanner and a printer when he bought it at Ollie's! It seemed like it only took a second before it was his turn. "P@k- uh... Hi... I'm Angelo Javier L. Dela Cruz. Section Hufflepuff. And uh my wand's kind of... it's weird and I think I need to trim the top off cause it's not straight but I haven't gotten to it yet. See?" he said as he showed his curved wand to the teacher. He took his seat and resolved to pay more attention while he scribbled notes in his notebook. There was just so much to study.

Finley was late. Terribly, terribly, late. As he raced through the corridors, he could only hope he would make it to class before someone noticed his absence. So perhaps it was right on time as he quickly rushed through the door for his first Charms class, only to overhear Angelo, the boy he'd met in Obsidian suggesting he needed to trim he tip of his wand. This had Finely looking at him like he was not only insane but that perhaps he should be dragged to St Mungo's for an evaluation of his mental faculties because honestly Finley could not believe what he was hearing a wizard say. "What?! YOU CAN'T DO THAT!" He shouted, not necessarily realising the kind of chaos he was about to unleash. "That's your wand, you're not supposed to break it! Or snip it! Or anything like that! You're gonna break it!" He said, shaking his head at the boy, before realising that actually the class was still ongoing. "It's meant to look like that!" He couldn't believe what he was hearing, honestly, taking the tip off of his wand. It would expose the core and make it useless!

Mallory raised a brow as first Angelo spoke, and was about to gently tell him that wasn't advisable, when a new boy burst into the room, and immediately started yelling. She blinked. Was... was this the boy that Sapphire had asked her to look after? She turned, pleased that aside from a little whining, Peter just wiggled and went back to sleep. "Mr. Baros," She spoke cooly. "Thank you for joining us. Please, have a seat." She waved her hand. "Mr. Dela Cruz," She looked to the other young boy. "I apologize for Mr. Baros' outburst. I'd like you to come by after class, please." She looked over the rest of the class. "Anyone else with questions about your wand, I'd like you to come as well. We're going to hold a little impromptu 'welcome to magic' session, a safe place to discuss everything thats going on. Snacks will be provided. Now, shall we continue?" She asked, looking over the boys to see if they had any questions.

Christa glanced curiously at the bassinet near the professor's desk as she entered the classroom, a slight smile tugging on her lips. She quickly found a seat and set her notebook on the desk, her fingers drumming lightly on its cover as she listened to the professor. The unfamiliar greeting piqued her interest, but her attention soon wandered as she observed the classroom around her. When the professor asked for introductions, Christa made sure to write everything down in her scrapbook as she listened, curious as to what was going to be said by the people around them. She hadn't realised how important the wand stuff was until people kept mentioning it all the time and she wondered if she should have a dedicated place in her scrapbook for her sister to talk about wands too. She made a note to add that. Christa perked up, mentally rehearsing her turn as it came to the time. "Hello, I'm Christa Langley, I'm in Gryffindor and my wand is made of flexible cedar. It's... comforting, it feels like it understands me." She quickly sat back down offering a small smile to the next boy as he stood up.

When he mentioned trimming his wand, her eyes went wide. "Can we do that?" She leaned forward to ask Mania. It didn't seem like it would make sense, but maybe she didn't know anything. That was when another boy, a Gryffindor seemed to break into the room and yell at Angelo about how he couldn't cut his wand. Christa slipped further into her seat, wanting to make sure he didn't turn his gaze on her next because that sounded like she didn't want him to give her attention at all. She felt like it might be a good idea to go to the Professor's after lesson thing.

Mania had arrived her lesson on time, unlike some but she wasn't one to judge... for now. She took a seat next to Callie and Christa, making sure to be close to Peregrine too, her mind still on the pact they had made in their dormitory. She listened to the lesson and was quite horrified by Angelo's suggestion of trimming his wand, surely not? A small giggle escaped her lips as Christa now asked her if they could do that "I mean you can nothing is sto-" She was cut off when Finley barged in screaming at the top of his lungs. Jeez he might be more related to a mandrake than Pim. "As I was saying, nobody's stopping you but you shouldn't. It'll break your wand." She continued her explanation as things quieted down.

When it was Mania's turn to introduce herself she got up proudly and showed her wand around. "Hi, I am Mania Athanasiou, but you can call me just Nia I am a Gryffindor, hence the red in my robes. My wand is 13 inches long which is a number often associated and meaning misfortune, though I find the number to be my lucky one so there's that. Something about myself, well I like to talk so the hat practically told me to shut up while sorting me oh and I named it Hatty. I am very excited to learn more thank you." Her introduction was longer than the ones before her, but it was fine. Nia sat in her seat quietly for the rest of the introductions and once it was time she was happy to skip out of the room.

As soon as Professor Grayveson greeted the students by calling them ‘dears’ Ryder was put off by her. Yes they were first years, babies in comparison to the rest of the students, but it still felt unnecessarily condescending whether she meant it that way or not. The introduction was also unnecessarily long, Ryder didn’t need the woman’s life story she was just supposed to be teaching them. Unfortunately, Professor Grayveson also wanted the students to do something similar and introduce themselves, when it eventually came to his turn Ryder stood up to get it over with. “My name is Ryder Chase, I’m in Gryffindor, I’m also a twin and my wand has a Meteorite Dust core which is pretty cool honestly,”

Ryder couldn’t believe the answer that came from one of the Hufflepuff boys, it caused Finley to rightly react strongly and even provoked intervention from the professor who he had expected to mostly sit back and listen. He doubted he would go to her office, he didn’t have any questions but it might be fun to watch any drama that might unfold from it. Once everyone had finished Professor Grayveson went onto give more detail about charms and gave them a taste of what they would be going onto learn, as well as letting them know they’d be learning Lumos in their next lesson. He made a note of the assignment so he could read up on the spell then he left the classroom.

Daisuke hesitated for a moment as he arrived at the Charms classroom as he saw the charmed bassinet by the professor's desk. He feared for a moment to wake the baby up but immediately thought the professor should have it well in hand if she brought her baby to the classroom. Quietly, he slipped into a seat as quickly as he could. With this class being with Gryffindors, Daisuke found himself relaxing and listening as Professor Grayveson introduced herself and asked each of them to share something about themselves and their wands. For the most part, it seemed to go fairly smoothly, until a Hufflepuff boy mentioned trimming his wand, which made Daisuke stare at him in horror. Thankfully, he wasn't the only one as a Gryffindor boy came barging in and the professor decided to host a session to discuss such things. When his turn came, he stood awkwardly, holding his wand in one hand as he spoke. “Daisuke Kaster… I’m in Hufflepuff and I think I have some relatives in the castle,” he began, his voice a tad bit quieter than the rest. “My wand is made of willow, and they said it will be good for potions and herbology.” He looked down at the wand, running a thumb over its surface. He sat down quickly, feeling his cheeks warm under the attention. He listened attentively to the rest of the students, perhaps a little fascinated. As the professor began explaining Charms and their significance, Daisuke found himself taking notes. When she cast her Patronus—a luminous Sphynx cat that prowled gracefully through the room—Daisuke couldn’t help but stare in awe. It was mesmerizing. He hoped he could do that too one day.

Tessaria was a Gryffindor, and whilst she wasn’t with her sister Camille, she was quite happy with her placement. It meant that she would share a common room with Genesee, whom she hadn’t spent much time with lately, and she would be able to explore the castle to her heart’s content. She had already tried to explore some places and was looking forward to exploring even more. She had her first week of classes to attend however, and so packed her backpack and headed to them.

Tess entered the charms classroom and took a seat amongst her peers. The professor seemed nice, despite Tess not knowing much about her yet. It wasn't long before she introduced herself however and was encouraging the class to do the same. It made sense as she really did want to know who she would be spending the next seven years with. When it was her turn, Tess hesitated a little before speaking. "Um, my name is Tess and I am in Gryffindor. My dad is the Hufflepuff Head of House. My wand is supposed to be good for people who are good at Flying and Taming Beasts... I'm not so sure about how well it will go casting charms, but I guess we will see." she mumbled the last part, not sure if this was interesting or not. To be honest, she didn't really know too much about her wand and why it was a good fit for her, and it made her think that she should definitely ask her older cousin about it. As the lesson came to an end, the professor gave them a list of spells that they would be learning and dismissed them.

Hēmi was late - again. People were already talking, about their wands it seemed. Hēmi tried to quickly remember something about his wand. "Uh, ko Hēmi - I mean, my name is Hēmi," Hēmi quickly reverted from Māori to English. "I'm from Aotearoa, you know, this place. Uh. I can do flax weaving pretty good? Oh, my wand. Yeah, it's got unicorn hair which is good for healing spells but I kinda don't want people to get hurt around me so I'm not sure how good that really is? Not that I wouldn't help someone who was hurt, but it...kinda...yeah." Hēmi finished suddenly, losing his confidence as he kept talking. They'd be doing spells next lesson, right? No more of this introduction stuff? Hēmi really hoped so.
