First Years, Lesson Four

Landon leaned back against his desk as he waited for his first years to arrive. After everyone had taken their seat, Landon said brightly, "Hello! I hope you're all in a good mood because today we will be checking our pumpkins. Put on your gloves and workrobes, because you will need them. You will be harvesting your pumpkin. Also, grab your pruning shears. Follow me!" Landon happily went out of the greenhouse, excited to see how everyone's pumpkins were getting along. He had his black, leather gloves on and the shears in his left hand and he hoped everyone else did too.

"Locate your pumpkin. All of them should be ready to take off the vine. Take out the pruning shears and have a firm grip." Landon demonstrated with his pumpkin. "Snip your pumpkin from its vine, like so. It may take a bit of strength." Landon easily snipped his from the vine. His pumpkin was free and he just smiled at his students, proud of all their efforts so far as he watched everyone begin to get to work. The man went around to each of the first years and helped them if need be, which he rather enjoyed doing. Thankfully, everyone seemed to get it and, once he was sure everyone's pumpkins were off the vine, he retrieved his wand out of his pocket and spoke again.

"Now, we will be taking the pumpkins to the castle. We'll have to levitate them as they will be much too heavy to carry yourselves and I don’t want anyone getting hurt. Everyone must attempt to levitate their pumpkin. Whether or not you have learned this in Charms yet, the levitating charm is Wingaridium Leviosa." He made the students repeat the words correctly, and then practiced the swish and flick movement. "Cast the charm on the pumpkin, and we will be going off to the castle." Landon cast the charm on the pumpkin and levitated it a bit above the ground. "I'll follow you so we won't have any screw ups." Landon walked behind them, making sure there weren't any mistakes and that no pumpkins fell onto the ground. Once they got to the castle, they went inside and lowered their pumpkins down in the entrance hall. Landon had ordered a few house elves to meet them and take them away, which they did. Once they were done, they left to go back to the greenhouse.

Assignment: RP the lesson. At the end, tell the house elf what you want your pumpkin to be turned into. Include a picture for extra credit. Please also note, RPing your character simply lifting the pumpkin with their bare hands will get them an EE grade.

Freddie reluctantly pulled on his gloves, taking a pair of shears from the barrel. His pumpkin was going to be so small compared to everyone else's. He knew it would be, because his growing spell hadn't worked properly, and he hadn't gone back afterwards to try again. Maybe he could just take someone else's, he thought as he stepped outside. But when he reached his part of the patch, he couldn't see the small one. Had Professor Carter fixed it for him? He must have. Freddie didn't ask questions. He just picked one that was in kind of the right place and started cutting at the vine, bouncing the shear handles together until the pumpkin was free. It took a bit of work, but at least Freddie could do it.

His heart fell. He'd never even tried the levitating charm. Now he had to levitate his pumpkin all the way to the castle? He took out his wand. Well, if his uncle could do this spell, it couldn't be that hard. "Wingardium Leviosa," he said. Swish and flick. "Wingardium Leviosa." The pumpkin wobbled a bit. He must have been doing something right. "Wingardium Leviosa!" It was floating! Only, like, two inches off the ground, but he was doing it! He worked on trying to bring it up a bit as they made their way back to the school, but he still had to pick it up when they got to the steps. Hopefully Professor Carter didn't notice that. Freddie put his pumpkin down and waited his turn to talk to the house elf. "Can you make mine a lantern? With a guitar on it," he added, so he'd know which one was his when he saw it.

Juniper gave a smile to the Professor as she entered the greenhouse and when told to do so she found her pumpkin. It was so big and healthy that the Hufflepuff just looked at it in awe for a moment. That was so cool that she'd done that with magic. Using the shears she cut the vine before removing the pumpkin from it, thank Merlin for the counter under the pumpkin for if it wasn't there they'd be one Juniper and one pumpkin down today, that pumpkin looked heavy. Feeling herself relax as the Professor said they'd not be carrying the pumpkins themselves she looked at it for a second. She knew how to cast said charm, it should be okay.

"Wingardium Leviosa." The first year said firmly, watching as her pumpkin lifted from the table. Levitating it carefully back to the castle Juniper waited for her turn to speak to the elf. "Do you like pumpkin sir? I would like you to make a hearty meal out of it for yourself and your fellow elves. Maybe a soup? I don't mind as long as you enjoy it." She said with a smile, the elves worked hard around the school and this was Juniper's way of giving something back.

Amias walked into the herbology greenhouse and took his spot in the room. His gaze moved to the professor at the front of the room, though they weren’t in the class for long. The profesor took them out to the pumpkin patch and Amias with ease found his. It had grown a whole lot in the past week. He nodded as the professor showed them how to cute them free and then he got to work. Doing as the professor showed them to get the pumpkin off the vine. The professor then had them using a spell he was very familiar with. He pointed his wand at it and said, ”Wingardium leviosa,” he got and then began moving with everyone else back to the castle, focusing hard to keep the concentration on the spell. He dropped his pumpkin off and then went back to get his things now that the lesson was over.
