Ailsa Evans loved one thing really above all else. She loved Quidditch, and despite what others thought, for her quidditch really was everything. Flying was the most fun she could and did have. She loved every second of it, which was why despite it only being the first few days of term, that she was already itching to get out and play a little ball, which was why Ailsa had decided when she'd awoken too early that morning, that it was the perfect time to get out to the pitch and get some flying done. She was looking forward to it all. Looking forward to making trying out the team if she was needed. As well as just trying to show that she was good at the sport. As good as the players on team that had been training for a few more years than her. With that in mind Ailsa got herself ready. She dressed pretty casually for the day. She was sure that it would be good fun to try it out when most would be getting ready, and since all she had planned was flying, she knew that she didn't really need to dress in anything other than what she already had. Ailsa needed casual clothes that were the best for flying. It took her a few times to find them, but in the end she did. It only took a few moments, and then Ailsa was out the door. Not caring if she awoke anyone as she left.

Ailsa finally felt truly at home when she stepped out onto that pitch. She couldn't remember the last time she had felt this amazing. She loved flying, it was her favourite thing in the world, and while she could deal with it not being in her life, she just preferred when it was. After grabbing one of the school brooms, she wished she'd persuaded her father to give her his old broom that she practiced on at home. It felt much better than this broom which she had to borrow from the school. It didn't feel good really. She wanted her own broom, but her parents had told her she wouldn't be able to get one until she was at least thirteen which to the young eleven year old Gryffindor was a very long way away. She was just really looking forward to getting started, so, throwing her bag on the ground, which really only held water and an extra layer, she jumped up onto the broom and flew up into the air. Oh, it was the most magical feeling. To start off the young Gryffindor just flew round and round the pitch until she was feeling pretty dizzy. Then she just hovered in the air on the broom, and sighed. She was relaxing, she had in the end been pleased with her placement in Gryffindor house, and the girl really was looking forward to everything about it. She wasn't too studious but to help her house she would try. As long as it was what she wanted.

Days that were bright and sunny but still somehow freezing. Wearing winter clothes on a supposedly sunny day was farfetched, even to an imaginative eleven year old. However he refused to let the cold stop him usually and today bode no exception. So spite every annoyance he felt towards the weather this morning Archie skipped his usual breakfast of fruit and bacon and dragged his broom along the castle and down to the Quidditch pitch. Hopefully the day would warm up as he flew around; he wasn't dressed well enough to woosh through the air in already bitter weather for too long. In the back of his mind he wished he were mindful enough to remember a jacket. It was too late to go back now, though. In the meantime he would have to deal with the cold. Slightly disgruntled to notice another student already flying around, Archie frowned but still attempted to ignore them as he mounted his broom and flew into the air. Some time had passed since he last flew a broom with his sister, Amity. He expected to be rusty but not rusty enough to fall off or make the most amateur of mistakes. Unlike the first time he flew he wasn't clumsy enough to lose his grip and fall off. He had enough experience with flying to avoid that again, surely.

After a few laps around the field continually ignoring the other student while practicing the small amount of tricks he knew, Archie finally decided to approach her. Flying around and avoiding her was not only awkward but also very rude in his eyes. Much like himself, this other person made the effort to go flying early in the morning, wasn't this grounds to start a conversation? The Gryffindor could only repress his extrovert-ism for so long before his need to talk to people got the better of him. "Morning!" He shouted as he flew over. She looked around his age and somewhat familiar, however not familiar enough for him to place her. He wasn't usually good with putting names to faces so his inability to remember her didn't surprise him at all. "Brrrr, it's cold today!" Even after the better part of half an hour the weather still crossed his mind. He was so used to the sunny, warm weather in Sydney that anywhere colder felt like the arctic. He wasn't comfortable in the cold; that much was obvious. What bothered him the most about the weather today was the sun, how it was shining bright as ever but failed to warm him up. Until starting school in New Zealand, he forgot how deceitful the sun could be on a winter's day.

Ailsa was off in her little world up in the sky. It was a fairly cold morning, the sun was shining brightly, but Ailsa knew this as the false sun. It was sunny and bright but it was not warm. It was annoying, but she knew that flying around would help her. She fly around the pitch several times. Happily gaining sped and momentum. She felt like just maybe she could try out for the team this year if she managed to pull her socks up on time, but she wasn't too interested in it. She was looking forward to at least getting good enough to be sure a spot on the team next year, no alternates for her. Ailsa noticed as she flew another lap that she was no longer alone on the pitch and that some student, who she was sure was in the same year as her was also flying around the pitch. He like her seemed to just be warming up. So, Ailsa just ignored him, keeping to her flying laps. Which was good, she could feel the bitterly cold air against her cheeks, but she was happily flying around the pitch. She didn't care about what this other person was doing. He was nothing to her. She was just minding her own business.

When Ailsa came to a stop, just to catch her breath and return some heat to her hands that she ended up watching the boy as he showed off and started doing tricks. Ailsa rolled her eyes at him, god that was so typical. She shook her head lightly and then realised he was actually flying over to her, he greeted her warmly, but she just raised her eyebrows at him. "Morning" she responded shortly. Not really intending to really deal with anyone at this time. She had just come to practice, and this wasn't going to help her practice. He then made the comment that it was cold and Ailsa just had to stop herself from laughing. Yes it was cold. She was breathing out smoke, because of how cold it was. "Really, I hadn't actually noticed." she told him, wondering if he would now leave. But, she realised there might be more fun in this. She didn't like his tricks, he was just being cocky. She smirked at him lightly. "I saw your tricks" she put the emphasis on the word tricks, as if it wasn't really anything. As if his tricks were just childs play to her. "I bet I'm fast than you" She told him, lightly patting the broom. Still smirking at him, she reached back and tied her hair up so that it was mostly out of her face. "I bet I can fly the length of this pitch and back before you can" Ailsa challenged.

<COLOR color="#000">Archie frowned slightly at the girl's reaction. She seemed awfully negative towards him after he so politely offered her a greeting. He gave her no insult or reason to react in such a grumpy manner. Maybe the weather really bothered her a lot, too. Archie would be lying if he said today's sunny yet bitter weather made him cheerful. It only made sense for another person to be so deeply bothered by it. The first year leant back slightly on his broom, putting more distance between him and the girl. Apart from her grumpy response and insulting his dearly beloved tricks he knew nothing about her, so he attempted to play it safe by keeping his distance. She could start a fight for all he knew. A fight he was sure he would win though, if worse came to worse. "You did see my tricks? Awesome." He smiled and responded kindly to her sarcasm, hoping he could kill her negativity with kindness. He wasn't sure much else he could do apart from disregard how grumpy and negative she was being. In no way was he showing off or trying to annoy her, he was merely attempting to practice so he could ultimately better his skills on a broom. She certainly didn't give a good first impression, Archie concluded.

The eleven year old straightened his posture at the prospect of a race. A chance to prove this girl wrong? Force her to eat her own, sarcastic words? He'd be a complete idiot if he denied himself this opportunity. "I bet you're not." He responded, not hesitating accept her challenge. "You insulted my skills, there's no way you're better than me." Now he reached the point of no return, completely and utterly determined to race her and win. Any kind of down talk from her wouldn't work to stifle his confidence on a broom. She was happy to make fun of his flying skills, but what skills did she have? He didn't see her practicing tricks. As far as Archie was concerned she was an amateur. "You're all talk." With a playful yet mischievous grin on his face, he flew to her side and assumed a starting point. "We'll start on three." He looked over to her and nodded. Agreeing on the terms however Archie never planned to follow them. He quickly began counting, tightening his grip around his broom as he spoke. "One." He leaned forward, readying himself to speed away. "Two!" Without any warning he sped forward early, essentially cheating as he flew a lap around the pitch. That girl was rude and Archie refused to play fair with her. She deserved to lose this race and it was his willingness to cheat that would ensure her loss.

Ailsa smirked slightly at him, when he asked if she seen his tricks. Not that she had been particularly impressed by them. Sure they had been somewhat good, but that wasn't the best she seen people do. "Yeah, they weren't the best" She told him realising as she watched him, that perhaps he wasn't too interested in her slightly more sarcastic tone about these things, but it didn't really matter. Ailsa didn't really care as of right now, if she didn't make too many friends, or was just a little bit distant with people. She was a first year, and had plenty time. This boy in front of her, he seemed pretty funny, but he seemed more fun to annoy. It almost seemed pretty simple to be able to annoy him, which for Ailsa was good news, since that was all that she wanted to actually do. Despite having a good number of friends at her last school, and this place being what she wanted, she was a little bit hung up on not being sorted into Slytherin. She really liked Gryffindor, but since she was one, she was definitely going to have fun with it. This person in front of her seemed like the right place to really start. As the girl issued her challenged the boy with the prospect of a race, she couldn't help but smile about the way he reacted. Clearly he thought he'd be better than her, which she assumed he would not be.

Smirking happily at what he said, he thought he was honestly better than her. That was truly laughable in her eyes. She was faster than this boy, she knew she was. "Doubt it" She returned to him, just as he said she was all talk, she just kept her eyes on him as she smirked, watched as he got into a starting position which Ailsa also did. She looked ahead of her waiting for the count down, but, the hopes of a fair race were dashed when this boy shot off at two. Ailsa cursed at him, but flew off as soon as she realised what he had done. Which was still not enough to be able to catch up properly. She flew as fast as she could. Constantly urging the broom to go quicker, but never being quite able to over take him. She would get close but the head start was just that, too much of a head start. On the turn, Ailsa attempted to reach out and grab the broom to slow him down, but was unable to. She just had to try to be quicker. Which of course was easier said than actually done. Ailsa was not happy at the outcome of this race, so when they stopped and he'd of course won, she shook her head at him. "You're a cheat."She told him, clearly both annoyed and bitter about having lost that race. "Had it been fair I would've won." She continued, "You were so scared to lose to me, you had to cheat." She finished with a small smirk. Still unhappy, but attempting to find a silver lining. Not that there really was one.

Sorry, this is pretty awful.

<COLOR color="#000">The look on the girl's face as they both slowed to a stop was priceless. To say Archie was ecstatic right now would be the understatement of the century. Even after he had a head start she wasn't faster than him. The claims she made before were nothing but phoney now. He had just bet this girl at her own game and didn't even care he was dishonest in doing do. She was definitely all talk, no walk and this race was enough to prove it. Being able to pour salt in her wound and rub her loss in her face was the best feeling. Without hesitation he began mocking her. "Fairness doesn't matter!" He exclaimed. "If you were faster than me, you would have won anyway!" His point was obvious and so were his intentions. She had pissed him off, insulted him. He was going to give her the exact same treatment in return. Archie had always been the kind of person to make things even and today was no exception. In his mind he was giving her a taste of her own medicine, nothing more and nothing less. Her reaction to losing only fueled his behavior. He was already mocking her for his win and he would continue mocking her until she stormed off. It was her own fault, really. She was the one who insulted him and then later challenged him to a race. What did she expect? Archie was as stubborn as he was ignorant and he refused to back down.

He began flying circles around her, trying to aggravate her even further. "What's wrong?" He questioned, tone of voice ever so condescending. "Can't accept a loss?" This was classic. Simply classic. His actions were rude and uncalled for, but to him they weren't. He believed how he was acting was perfectly justified and would not think differently. However, after a long pause he eventually decided to quit mocking her and return to being casual. He could only take insulting somebody so far before he stopped himself. He still believed he was right, though. He merely chose not to point it out any longer. "I'm just kidding. You're pretty good at flying. I'm just way better." He flew slightly closer to her and shrugged. If she were a guy this would have been the moment when he patted her back, though simply because she was a girl he decided against it. According to his sisters some girls were weird about touching, and he assumed this girl would be after the little mockery show he put on for her. He thought it was best to play it safe right now. Like he had when he first noticed her sarcasm. For the most part his arrogant outburst was over, though if the girl wanted to wind him up again he would gladly wind her up again in return.

Ailsa couldn't honestly believe that this boy had cheated just to gain an advantage over her. She'd been pretty close to catching up, but her broom was not that good, and he had been annoyingly fast about it. She knew that had there not been her own delay because of him cheating that she might've had a better chance of winning. She just shook her head at him, finding it ridiculous that he was even happy about it. There was nothing good about cheating. Had his mother never taught him that. She felt like punching him square in the face when he proceed to mock her. "I am faster than you." She told him, "You cheated" she said. This was stupid and it felt really unfair. She didn't cheat on things. Had she realise he was going to cheat, she would've cheated before him. Really, out of all the things that Ailsa was actually really annoyed about was the fact she hadn't thought to cheat. In her mind, sure she was saying that what he had done was silly and pointless, but really it was just because she wished she'd come up with it first, and for no other reason what so ever. She cursed silently at him, wishing she actually knew a curse or two to throw at him. Just to make him suffer. Just to show that she was better than him. Really Ailsa was actually incredibly pissed off about what he'd done, and the fact he was making her angry now.

The other boy had taken to flying round her in circles. She clenched her fist, staying stationary in the air. She could feel her own anger beginning to grow within her. Though she knew this was exactly what he wanted. She knew that she could just try to laugh it off, and try to not be so annoyed by it, but she really couldn't. Instead she just waited, saying nothing, watching as he flew round and round her. Finally the boy stopped and he seemingly appeared to have decided enough was enough. He flew slightly closer to her. She smiled, a falsely sweet smile at him. As he then told her that he was just kidding around with her, even complimenting her on her flying, had he left it at that, things might've been fine. But, he didn't, so it wasn't. She took one hand off the broom, as he flew closer to her, and without even pausing to think about it, punched him as hard as she could on the arm. She didn't care if it was dangerous, she had just had enough. "I'm a better flyer than you," She smirked at him, "I'm better than you at everything." she told him, with a decisiveness. "And don't expect me to play fair anymore either." she assured him with a small smirk. "Let's do something else. One on one chaser practice" She challenged him, wanting to see if he was as good as he though he was under slightly different circumstances.
