Phoebe had been itching to return to Hogwarts, but now that she was here for her final year, she felt a strange anxiety. Hogwarts had always been a place of endless possibilities for her, and there was a lot she still wanted to do and try out. But she was in her final year, so her time was limited. She had taken her notebook out during the break and had written down as many things as she could think of, hoping she would be able to get to all of them in between working at her NEWTs. One of the big things Phoebe wanted to do was leave some sort of mark on the school. Something permanent that she would know would remain forever as a reminder of her. She had thought long and hard about this, all of her ideas implausible. It was hard to think of something she could add to the school that wouldn't just be discovered and removed.
And that was when she realized it would be easier to do it the other way around. If she couldn't add anything permanent to Hogwarts, she could perhaps take something away instead. She had learned vanishing spells in her fifth year, and if she removed a small part of Hogwarts it might not be so noticeable, but she would know. Phoebe had eventually settled on vanishing a gargoyle, something that wouldn't stand out too much, but would still perhaps be missed. She had found a rather old and ugly one in the courtyard, and after making sure there weren't many people around, she tried to vanish it. It didn't work. Phoebe had first thought that perhaps she was a bit out of practice with these kinds of spells, so she tried again. And again. And again. The stupid thing wasn't budging. It hadn't occurred to Phoebe that she had never vanished something this big before, nor that it was probably protected from magic like this simply by being part of the school. She scowled at the thing, then gave it a kick. "Why won't you disappear, you stupid piece of stone?"
