Sara was sitting in the kitchens, she liked it down here. It was always warm and toasty, and the house-elves were lovely, they told her stories and she like talking to them. At the moment she was baking, an apple tart in fact. They had always been her Mam's specialty, and she'd taught Sara how to make them. She hummed to herself as she worked, kneading the dough. She smiled to herself, it was so nice down here. At least a dozen house-elves had offered to help her by now, but she had declined. She wasn't making this for some occasion, or for some person, she was making it, because she enjoyed making it.

She took the pastry out of the bowl and began to roll it out after scattering some flour on her work surface. She liked this part, but it was so easy to get it wrong, if the pasrty stuck to the counter. As soon as that was finished, she put it on the plate, over the base, which was already filled with apple slices and sugar. She smiled to herself as she made the pastry roses and leaves and put them on top of the tart. She placed it into the oven, and sat down, leaning back in the chair and taking out a book, to wait until it was finished.

Tara had arrived in school just over a week ago. she had had an interesting holiday and wasn't as stressd about the wedding as she had been the previous year. after a week of eating western food she was was missing her own food. she headed down to the kitchens to ask the house elves if they could make her something nice. she had taught them to make curry properly, and although she couldn't get it quite the same over here as india it was still pretty good. whilst she was waiting for them to make it she saw that there was someone else sitting in the kitchen, someone she recognised. "Hello Sara, how are you?" she asked heading over to her friend and taking a seat near her.

Sara was just finishing the third chapter of her book- "Firesong." When Tara greeted her, it was the third book in a series, and it was quite good, though the books weren't as large as she prefered to read. Still, she was glad of the interuption, she didn't want to finish it quickly. "Hey Tara!" she grinned, beaming. "I'm fine, just making some apple tart-you?" she replied, turning to face her. Tara was a lovely girl, she really liked hanging out with her, and though they had only hung out in groups before, she was glad of the chance to get to know Tara better. "So, how were your holidays?" she asked, she'd had good hoidays, she'd visited Ireland, as usual, but her Father had also taken her on a trp to New York-which had been very fun, she'd always been her Dad's "Princess", as he used to call her when she was younger. It was the English of her Hebrew name, which he hadn't known at the time, but it was an interesting coincidence.

tara Smiled back at Sara. as she greeted her. :Apple tart, yum. I just came here for some curry, i miss it after the summer, the food here is nice, but its not the same as at home" she said and just on cue a couple of elves headed over carrying a plate with enough food on to feed her whole family. she didn't know how they could make it so fast she guessed that they knew how magic could be used to make food. "do you want some?" she asked taking a couple of plates and giving one to her friend. "My holidays were good, pretty normal though but it was nice to see my family again. How about yours?" she said wondering what Sara had been up to.She had visited her family and spent some time getting to know Praneil better. she still didn't look forward to her wedding, but she wasn't dreading it a much. She wasn't sure if she was imagining it but he didn't seem thrilled about it wither, but she was probably just imagining it. She had always considered Sara a Friend, but she realised she hadn't spent much time with her without a whole group of other people around. she didn't even know how much Sara knew about her. She didn't know much about Sara, mainly that she had fallen out with kate, and she was really into music.

"You must miss it." she sympathised, her home wasn't as far away as Tara's, and mostly everyone here spoke the same language as her, sometimes she worried that Tara might feel alone. She lived in England now, but Hogwarts felt more like home than England, and Ireland would be her real home, forever. She smiled as the curry arrived, nodding to the house-elves. She knew them all pretty well, because she was down here so often, cooking cakes, or buns for a birthday or some other occasion. It was fun, she liked doing it, and the house-elves were so welcoming. "Yes, please!" she answered, enthusiastically as she was handed a plate. It looked delicious. She took a forkful and nodded happily. Gorgeous. She swallowed and looked up at Tara. "This is great!" She thought a moment before answering Tara's question. "It was good, Dad took me to New york, which was amazing. Everything there is so big!" she answered, then paused for a moment. "I don't know, it's just weird, travelling, Dad's trips are all for business." she wasn't sure exactly what her father did for a living. He used the inheritance to work the stock market-that's what he said, but she didn't understand what he meant.

Tara nodded "at times, New zealand seems a world away from india, but sometimes I am glad that i have somewhere else to go and that i am not stuck in the village were i grew up, like my brother. but going home once a year isn't much" she said. she knew Sara would be different. most of her family was at the school, although she knew that Sara and Kate had fallen out. she picked up some bread and used it to pick up some of the curry. she knew people in new zealand used knives and forks to eat and she usually did, but for curry and other dishes from home she felt wrong eating it in any way that wasn't how she would eat it at home. "I'm glad that you like it, it's one of my favourites" she said before taking another mouthful. "wow New York. I have only seen pictures of it. what is it like?" she asked. Although new York wasn't top on her list of places to visit she knew that it was somewhere that you had to go to at least once. you never know she may fall in love with the place, the photos and movies she had seen there were a lot of bright lights, and busy streets, but the centre a tranquil park. "so did you have a lot of time on your own, or did the rest of your family go?" she asked

Sara really symapthized with Tara, being so far from her family. She found she didn't really need her family anymore, well not her siblings anyway. "I just can't imagine it, though I miss Mam and Dad, but Hogwarts feels like home now, I can't imagine leaving." she replied. She watched Tara eating the food off the bread. "How do you do that?" she asked, curious. She tried doing it herself, only to find she couldn't keep it on the bread. "I'm surprised the elves knew how to make it." she commented, looking up at Tara. "It's brilliant, everythings huge, and it's packed with people, so many people in suits, and talking on phones. It was so fast-paced. I really liked it, though it felt a little...distant." she enthused, struggling to illustrate the hustle and bustle of the big city. She wasn't really sure how to answer the next question. She didn't know how Kate felt about her going with Dad on her own. "No, just me and Dad, I don't know what the others did, me and Dad, I don't know we just kind of...we're very alike, and we've always...clicked." she tried to eplain, but it was hard. It had just always been like that-her and her Dad. She was close to her Mam too, almost more than Dad, but Dad understood better than Mam, that her and Kate were really seperated, and there was nothing to be done. He also knew it was neither of their fault, but it had happened, and it was hard for her Mam to understand that.

Tara swallowed. "hogwarts is starting to feel like a second home to me, i don't want to graduate" she said. she knew that once she graduated her life would switch upside down again. she would have to go back to practically living like a muggle. "lots of practice, see" she said slowly picking it up a pice and passing it to her. "you sort of need to fold it and pinch it" she said as she took a bit more. "new york sounds amazing. maybe some day when i can apporate i will go there, and do whatever you do in new york" she said smiling. she had met people from america in the past and they had all said that you had to go to new york once in your life time. "just you and your dad, that must have been fun, so what did you do when he was working?" she asked, she had said that it was a business trip and although she didn't know what business he did, she assumed that there was some work involved.

Sara nodded, agreeing. "Me neither, maybe we'll come back as teachers." she smiled, she might like that, teaching, though she already knew she wanted to be an auror. She was already taking all the subjects neccessary. She tried doing what Tara showed her, managing to do it, but not nearly as graceful as Tara. She bit into the bread and curry, and it tasted devine, the two flavours mixing and complimenting each other. She laughed as Tara replied. "Yeah, it is, I can't wait until we can apparate, it'll be so much easier to go places." she answered, beaming at her. "He wasn't working too much this time, mostly I went shopping, and went sight-seeing, though we went to all the big places together, statue of liberty, the Met, that kind of stuff, though I didn't really understand half the things they told us in the museums." she replied, she had enjoyed her holidays, and her Dad was so fun to be around, he was reliable and funny, and they worked well together.

Tara Smiled and shook her head. "It is unlikely that i will be able to return. my family are muggles, and Indian. and like many indian families, they want me to marry. and start a family as soon as i can." she snorted in a humoured kind f of way "I'm lucky that i have convinced them to let me finish school, but after i have to go home and 'live like a proper indian girl and make a respectable marriage' " she said frowning. her accent grew stronger at the end as she was repeating exactly what her farther had said. "Maybe if I can apparate O can still keep at least one foot in the magic world, it would be horrible to have to be a muggle again after learning all of this magical stuff" she said. the took a sip of a glass of water that had found its way to the table probably placed there by some helpful house elf. "that sounds like a good holiday, i have heard the shopping in New york is the best, but it can be expensive" she sad, she knew that the moons had a fair bit of money as she had been to their house quite a few years back. "all of those landmarks sound amazing I would love to just spend a day drawing them" she said. thinking about all of the famous places she had heard of that she wanted to sketch. she had heard that new york had some very famous arty places.

Sara was shocked at Tara's reply. she couldn't imagine not having choices, not being allowed choose her future. It would be like a cage. She shivered to herself as she thought about it. "I can't believe that. Do you really not have a choice?" she replied, she just couldn't imagine it. Poor Tara, she really empathized with her and she knew that she wouldn't be able to compose herself the way Tara did. "A respectable marriage? What exactly is a respectable marriage?" she asked, confused. she just didn't understand it. In her family, there was no judgement. They could marry who they wanted, and do what they wanted. She'd never really appreciated her own freedom before.

"Yeah, and even if you can't, we'll all visit, and baby-sit and, and anything we can!" Sara answered, she didn't want Tara to have to do it on her own, she didn't want her to feel left out. She fully intended to keep that promise, to help Tara keep a foot in the magical world at least. She smiled as Tara changed the subject, hoping she hadn't made her feel awkward. "Yeah, it was weird over there, there were so many shops I'd never even heard of." she commented, she liked New York, it was a cool place, though it was terrible, seeing people on the streets. She'd seen it before, but there were more there, more than she'd seen before. "I have a pahmphlet and programme from the Met if you want it, it has pictures of the works in there." she offered, she had no use for it, she liked art, but she knew Tara was ten times more talented than she was.

Tara was surprised with Sara's reaction. it had been over a year and she thought that everyone in her friend group would have known. "I had a choice a year ago, it was impossible but i made a decision. If i have made the other choice i wouldn't be here" she said. bracing herself emotionally to tell the whole story. she had over the last year gotten used to her place, but it didn't mean that she wasn't upset about what had happened. As the next question she answered, holding her emotions back against a dam and just saying the facts. "A respectful marriage would be to someone Indan, someone with a good family and preferably enough money. my parents had already picked a boy out for me when i was young." she paused, realising that she had it wrong. "hang on, his family had already picked me when i was young. I don't know why, its not like our family is influential or anything, so they certainly couldn't have said no to the Patils, as it would have been good for all of us. I found all of this out after second year, long story, and once they my family thought i was old enough to date they told me, and the choice was that i either engage or don't return to school." she held up her left hand and there were two rings on it. one was an engagement ring that Praneil had bought for her, and the other was the ring Sara had get her for her birthday in first year, an irish claddagh one. She smiled when Sara offered to baby sit. "thanks for the offer, but its a little early still." she said, a laugh audible through her words.
Tara was glad when the conversation turned back to new york, she had grown used to the idea of her marriage but it didn't mean that it made her happy. "I was surprised how different all of the shops were over here compared to home, and i can imagine New York will be just as different." she said she liked the new zealand shops, she also liked the Indian shops, they were just different. "ooh, i would love to have a look at that, but I wouldn't want to take it off you" she said. before taking another mouthful of food.

Sara was shocked, she'd known Tara's parents wanted her to marry, but giving her an ultimatum like that wasn't fair. she'd always thought Tara's culture was more intresting, but she found herself very thankful for her heritage. she couldn't imagine anyone trying to force her to marry someone, clean her room maybe, but never something so serious. "So, this guy-fo you know him, do you like him?" she asked, curious, she didn't want Tara to have to marry someone she didn't like. That would be terrible.

She looked at Tara's ring, it was beautiful. "It's lovely." she remarked truthfully, but then something else caught her eye, it was the Cladagh rng she'd given Tara in First Year, she couldn't believe Tara still had it. "I had no idea you still had this!" she grinned, looking at the familiar design. It was so sweet, and touching that Tara still had it. Her heart warmed as she looked at her friend. she could imagine how hard it must be for her, and her heart went out to her. It was so unfair.

"It's true though, Me, Willow, Stefan and Kate-whom I hope will have realised how absolutely perfect they are for each other by then. We'll all come." she replied, in earnest. They would, because Tara was so good and kind, and such a wonderful friend, there was no way they'd leave her alone. She could feel Tara's relief at the change of conversation and continued with enthusiasm. "Yeah, it is different, and the accent! By God, if I had a penny dfor every time I heard someone say 'Oh, Moy Gawd!' I'd have a million euro in not time." she answered half-jokingly. the Americans did overuse the prase just a little bit, but she like them, the majority of them anyway. "It's yours." she replied. "You're a ton more talented than I will ever be." she took a bit of her curry and swallowed quickly. "You know what always intrigued me?" she asked rhetorically. "I always liked that there were only two letters that are different in our names, and I always thought it was cool that 'S' and 'T' come beside each other in the alphabet-it's odd isn't it?" she mused, it had always struck her about her and Tara's names.

Tara saw Saras face change as she told her story. "I don't not like him, he is my older brothers closest friend, and like a second brother to me" she said. she had no feelings for him that one would expect for someone to have whilst marrying. she smiled when Sara complemented her ring. It was a pretty ring and if it was was for any other reason she would have liked it but it sometimes felt more like a binding than pice of jewellery, especially when a certain boy was nearby, but she wasn't going to tell sara that. "Yes I really like it. Its such a pretty ring and i like how there are different ways of wearing it." she said. absentmindedly twisting it.
"that would be very nice to have all of my friends around. and i hope Kate and Stefan ind out how good they are together as well" she said glad for her friends support as she had been all along "I would love to see you all" she said putting her arms around her friend. "thank you" she said
when Kate said about the accents, she couldn't help but laugh, where she lived there were quite a few tourists, they came to her town for both the religious temples and the natural scenery. "Americans tend to overreact. but they are rather interesting." he said. before thanking Sara for offering her the book. "thank you so much for the book, I look forward to reading it" she said, smiling.
at the mention of their names she though back. "I noticed that they were only one letter different before, but i hadn't noticed that the letter differences were next to each other." just then she remembered why Sara was in the kitchen to begin with. "were you cooking something in here, is it okay" she said hoping that they hadn't caused whatever it was to burn.

"Well that's good, I mean, it could have been worse." she replied, at least she knew him, at least she liked him. She shuddered to think of other options, it could've been an old man, or someone who wouldn't treat her well. At least this way, Tara knew the guy and got along with him. She smiled as Tara looked at her ring. She couldn't imagine making such a commitment so young. She could never do it, but she supposed that it was a luxury, loving the person you ended up with. Sara hugged her back, Tara was so sweet and kind, it was so wrong that anything bad could happen to her. Everyone had always said life wasn't fair, but she hadn't realised how unfair it could be, that a person as lovely and selfless as Tara could be bound in such a way.

"I know, and they all support each other, their friendships are so-personal somehow. I like it, it's reassuring to know that people can be so embracing." she replied, grinning, she liked the American's, they were so open, about everything. She'd really enjoyed it over there. She grinned as Tara replied. "I know it's weird, but it just occured to me." she commented, beaming at Tara. She nodded as Tara asked about her cooking. "It's apple tart, it should be ready around now, It doesn't take too long." she smiled, getting up and taking out the tart, it was perfect, golden-brown and soft on the inside. "Do you want some?" she asked, setting it on a mat on the table.

Tara smiled when sara said it could have been worse, that had been the way she had tried to see it. "you're right, if i hadn't been here i would be over the moon right about now, but meeting people from different places has changed my view". there was one particular person she was thinking but she quickly turned her mind away from him before it could settle. she knew that Praneil was nice and they got along and over time she may even learn to love him. "I know that it could have been worse, but what confuses me is why they chose me. they are a caste and a half above my family, so they could have picked a much more eligible partner for him." she said speaking her thoughts out loud. she had never been particularly smart at school, (where his mother taught) and she had always been seen as a little odd, by most people, too into drawing and not into proper stuff like cooking, or the stuff normal girls liked like music and movies and fashion. she guessed that they much have chosen her for her looks, it was rare to find an indian girl with green eyes.
"the ones i have met are the same, they seem pretty rough, but they are nice and petty solid people once you get to know them" she agreed. she hadn't been meaning to be asking about the food, she just didn't want it to be forgotten and burnt. however it was a good job that she had remembered it when she had as it came out of the oven perfect and golden. when Sara offered her some she smiled realising that they had eaten all of the curry between them. "It looks delicious. are you sure you didn't make it for anything?" she asked wanting to be sure that it hadn't been made for a special occasion before she accepted her friends offer.

Sara nodded in agreement. "I suppose, I mean different cultures have different histories and traditions.." she answered lamely, not really sure what to say. A year ago she would have been shouting and demanding that things be changed, but she knew now that it wouldn't help anyone for her to get angry, and if anything-it would make Tara feel worse. "Come on Tara, you're beautiful, a good cook, and you have magical powers, what more could a boy ask for?" she grinned, looking into Tara's stunning green eyes. She had beautiful hair, dark and shiny. Sara had always wanted black hair, she'd been born with it, but it had grown lighter as she grew older.

"Yeah, I mean take Willow for example-there isn't a nicer person on Earth. It just proves that you shouldn't judge people by nationality or race." she areed, nodding her head. Her Father had always been big on equality, on treating other people as well as they treated you. She'd grown up thinking that way. Sara smiled, as she cut the tart into slices. "No I just wanted an excuse to come down and visit the elves." she grinned, winking at one as he passed. she was terribly fond of the house-elves. She'd always thought Hermione Granger had the right idea about Elf Rights, but there wasn't much to be done-they were willing slaves. She cut a slice for Tara, offering it to her.

Sorry For ultra-late reply, I've been having a lot of study/rehersals/competitions going on in the past week :/

OOCOut of Character:
Dont worry about it, hope your Study/Rehearsals/competition has gone well.

Tara Nodded, "yeah, different cultures and traditions" she agreed. she could see that Sara was trying to decide ht to think on the matter and was glad that she hadn't decided to tell her that it wasn't right like almost everyone else had. instead she complimented her. "thank you, I guess you are right,I have a lot going for me. you are beautiful too, and great at music, and your also a witch" she said hopeing that didn't sound big headed at all. sometimes she wished that she hadn't inherited her mothers green eyes as she was sure that it was this rarity that had caused the patils to pick her so young.
"Willow is really nice from what i know, but i don't know her as well as i would like to, where is she from?" she asked. it was surprising that willow had always been in her group of friends but she realised that like Sara she had never really gotten to know her particularly well. she took the slice of the tart it smelt delicious. "well its is certainly a good excuse to visit the elves" she said before taking a bite. "mmm, and a tasty reason too, this is delicious" she said some of the food still in her mouth.

Opps wrote wrong name for living in Anerica... It's meant to be Amanda, though she hasn't really been hanging out with them recently-she's Sara's roommate-jst gooing to pretend I wrote the right name :r

Sara didn't really feel it was right for her to say anything on the matter, it would just upset Tara, and she knew that Tara had probably found some way of dealing with it herself. She knew that Tara had been dating Demetris Kovloz, ws that why they'd broken up? If so, Tara must have been feeling miserable. thus, it was Sara's job to keep things light and happy. "Thanks, but seriously, don't worry about it, you have a long time before aything happens. Anyway, he must be smart at least-he chose you!" she grinned, and she was being truthful. Tara was one of the most caring people she'd ever had the pleasure to meet, and she knew any guy would be lucky to have her.

"Amanda's from Boston, but she moved to New Zealand a few years ago." she smiled she hadn't seen much of Amanda rrecently, and she missed her, two people she hadn't seen Kayden and Amanda, it was a pity he'd been good friends with both. "Yeah, I like them, there isn't a bad thought among them." she smiled biting into the tart-it was good, "Thanks." she smiled, as she swallowed, she liked Baking, though she knew she wasn't on a ar with, say, Willow-who was amazing.

Tara smiled at the compliment. Praneil was away with his uncle working/doing an apprenticeship in their family business. she wasn't quite sure what the business was but it seemed like it was doing well. It took her a few moments to understand what she actually meant. "thank you. It was his family that matched us not him." she tried to explain, blushing slightly. she had tried to work out why they had picked her, she wasn't from a well off or auspicious family. they mush have had some reasoning, but she couldn't see it. the name of a city in america sparked her memory. "There is a first year in hufflepuff from there" she said trying to remember her name. "I think that she was called Jordan" she said wondering if she was Sara's friends sister. she took another bite of the pie. It was really good. "they are really generous, and very good at fixing up a snack whenever I want one, and not complaining if it is just after a meal, or late in the evening or early morning." she said

Sara smiled at Tara, she was so lovely, it seemed wrong that her family would do this, but perhaps... Perhaps they were doing this for her. She tried to put herself in Tara's parents shoes. she was their daughter, they'd want her to be happy, and maybe maybe thought this marriage was the way for her to be happy. Maybe they didn't see all her other options. "Well then, they picked well." she replied, grinning when Tara blushed. She was a lovely girl and she hoped her husband would be kind to her. "Are they waiting until you've finished school to have the wedding?" she asked curiously, it might be easier for her if she had more time.

"Cool-maybe Amanda knows her." she mused, deciding to ask her later. "I know, they're always happy to help." she grinned, looking around the room. She was happy, here with Tara, there was no pressure to say the right thing, or act right. She felt completely comfortable.

"thank you, and it will happen when i finish school it was the only criteria that i could et in. as i want to finish school and wont be able to if i'm married." Tara said to Saras comment. however she really wanted to change the subject. she found thinking about this subject brought her down and she didn't like being upset, or in a bad mood. Thankful that the topic turned to people. "they may know each other" she said, although there were lot of people from all over the world, she however that meant that if people were from similar places, especially slightly smaller places, or places where there wasn't as many witches or wizards.
trying to come up with a topic to change the conversation to she thought about what was happening around the school in the near future. the first thing that she thought about was the halloween feast. "do you have any plans for costume for the Halloween feast, I cant think of anything" she said. she had wanted to try and get the sorority to have a group theme like she had hear that they had had before, but she had left it too late to organise, maybe she should wait until next year an come up with an awesome theme.

Sara sensed that Tara didn't like talking about her upcoming marriage. She smiled reassuringly at her and allowed her to change the subject. "Yeah, it'd be cool if they did." she replied, nodding. "So, what do you think of the lessons, they're really laying it on this year aren't they?" she asked, eating a spoonful of tart. It tasted good, just like her Mam made. She looked into Tara's eyes, they were very similar to Jakes, though there was something about Jake's eyes that transfixed her.
"I 'm thinking of dressing as a biker." she mused, she liked motornikes, they were cool, and bar brooms, they were a good way to travel. "Do you think we should all go together again?" she asked, leaning forward on the desk. "It's been fun every time we go together, and everyone always has a good time." she added, grinning. It might be fun, if they all went together.

"yes it would be cool, It would be interesting if they knew each other and they didn't know that they were each here" she said wondering out loud more than actually talking to Sara. "classes are getting heavier this year, i don't want to know what OWLS will be like, and i am dreading the NEWTs, how are you finding it?" she asked knowing that her friend was a ravenclaw and they were usually smart, but she wasn't sure how much Sara followed the stereotype. she took another sip of water as she sale the
"A biker will be a good costume, I cant think of anything to go as" she said. " think that all of us going together, It is always fun when the whole group of us get together." there had been few times over the years when all of her friends had met up and they were always enjoyable times. the first thing she thought of was the ball in her first year, a whole group of them had had a really good time. she then though bout her next ball which was a great night although she had been with only one other person. last year at the Halloween feat she had had a good time too, she met stefan, sapphire and danielle there. it had been a good night.
OOCOut of Character:
sorry it sucks

"Yeah, that'd be cool." she grinned, as Tara mused to herself. "I'm dreading the O.W.Ls myself, I mean, sure I'm studying, and it's not too bad this year, but I really want to keep all my subjects for N.E.W.Ts, because I need them to.." she began, "...Well to become an auror." she finished, she hadn't told too many people, as she felt they might think she was a bit too confident, and really..she wasn't. She didn't know if she could make it as an auror, and she didn't want to tell people that, because if she failed, they'd all know. She didn't want their pity.

"I'm sure you'll find something-maybe you could dress up as one of the teachers?" she suggested, smiling. She nodded, agreeing with Tara. "Yeah, we could invite everyone!" she answered, feeling enthusiastic. Last halloween had been, a bit..odd. Se couldn't remember it as vividly as others, but it had been alright.

OOCOut of Character:
Me too. :p
