Apparition 1

This was an important milestone in the life of a wizard, and Irene Finch knew that many of the students looked at their license as a taste of the freedom they'd earn on their way to becoming fully trained wizards. With the registration list tucked in a folder that was under her arm, the woman stepped into the room, her heels announcing her presence. She called attendance, making sure that no one had snuck into the room without paying their galleons.

Tucking the folder away, Irene began. "Good afternoon, sixth years. My name is Irene Finch and I'm Head of the Department of Magical Transportation. I'm here on behalf of the Ministry of Magic to prepare you for your apparition exam." She said all of this briskly. Irene was not a lady who liked her time wasted. In truth, she enjoyed teaching apparition to much of the dull paperwork she was often stuck doing as the head of a department.

Walking around as she spoke, Irene's icy blue eyes looked at all of them and none of them at once. "The headmistress has been kind enough to lift the enchantment placed on this room so that you will be able to practice apparating within these walls for the duration of our lessons. But do not attempt to do so in your free time. It would be...unwise to attempt practicing here or elsewhere outside of these lessons" she stated in a very firm tone. With so few students and the furniture against the walls as she'd requested, her voice carried easily around the large room.

The woman focused on a student who'd been fidgeting, her blue eyes piercing into the student. "I will warn you from the start that your ability to apparate will have little to do with what house you are in or your blood status. Your ability to apparate will, solely, depend on your ability to focus on the three Ds: Destination.Determination. Deliberation." She enunciated each word. "There are no shortcuts. If you fail to grasp these concepts, you will fail your exam. First, you must choose your destination." She'd made a quick scan and found the perfect landing point. " Next, you will focus your determination and once you feel you are ready..." With a small step, Irene apparated next to one of the sixth years who had been whispering while she was lecturing and continued, "you must move with deliberation like so." She gave the student a sharp look.

Moving towards the front of the room, Irene continued lecturing the students on the concept of apparating. She knew that some were probably expecting to apparate today but she also knew that the foundation for apparating started with this very important information. Soon enough their time was up, and they had done nothing but listen. "Don't forget the 3 Ds. I will see you all next time. A word to the wise: Don't bring anything with you to the next lesson. The less you carry, the easier it will be." With that, she dismissed the students though she waited a few moments longer in the event that any of the students had questions.

Please make sure to register for the course! Remember that these lessons are so that your student can earn a license. Without it, they can't apparate! This is just the first of only three lessons before the exam takes place.

Aurora was looking forward this semester. She had done well in the first semester and knew that as long as she kept working hard she would do well in this one too. She was, another step closer to being to be a Healer. The gryffindor prefect was getting herself ready for the day, getting the necessary books and everything she needed. Aurora finished putting her hair up and out the way, and grabbed the quidditch gear and then headed out of the dorm room when she could. Knowing this wouldn’t a difficult day at all, and looking forward to it.

Aurora was excited about being finally able to apparate. She knew that this was going to be good. She was eager to learn how to do it. She was standing with her sister and headed into the great hall the moment that she could. Aurora glanced to the woman at the front of the students and began talking them over what exactly this involved. She nodded along, though was itching to take some physical notes. It was really all she wanted to do was take down what was being said. The lecture itself was not that long and the professor was quickly wrapping it up and had them heading out of the great hall.

Rosie walked into the great hall with her sister. She was pretty nervous to learn this, but knew that it would benefit her to know how to do it. Xinyi wouldn’t be at the school in the next year and she wanted to be able to speak to him and see him during her off time and not just have him come to her. This just needed it to be what she did. Rosie was standing with her sister and listening along with what the woman would say. She nodded along with it, trying her best to follow along and feeling better with having to do this. As so many others could do. With that, the lesson was wrapped up and she headed out of the room.

Demetrius had mixed feelings about apparition. On one hand, it was infinitely practical to be able to just essentially teleport somewhere. It'd make travel so much quicker. But he'd heard stories - splinchings - and he wasn't keen on that at all. Demetrius' brother had told him it probably wasn't much to worry about if he followed instructions, but what did he know? He was a muggle, not an expert. Nevertheless, Demetrius made his way to the great hall to learn. Their loaned ministry official seemed a little severe, but she inspired confidence as Demetrius listened to what she had to say. At the end she rather ominously suggested they bring little with them - would they be apparating so soon? The idea was a little nerve-wracking to Demetrius. He kept his feelings of apprehension to himself as the lesson ended and he went on his way, back into the rest of the castle.

Monday Weeks could hardly wait to get back into the school rhythm. He still took every class offered, and would continue to do so. He might be crazy, but he looked forward to every single subject to see what else he would learn. Monday made sure that he looked decent, with his hair brushed and his robes were on. His tie was fastened and the prefect pin was proudly shown on the front of his robes. He did like having that title, and looked forward to the next year with it. Monday checked the time and the day of the week so that he knew what class that he had to go to before heading out to start the day. He was a busy sixth year after all. He had clubs, Quidditch, friends, and now, classes and homework.

Monday walked in the Great Hall for the first lesson of this new class. He dreaded it because he was afraid that he might hurt himself, but it might be worth it. The ministry worker introduced herself as Irene Finch, and her title. They would be able to practice apparating within the walls during their lessons, but they should not practice outside of the lessons. It made sense because he did not want to hurt himself without the teacher present. Monday took notes over the three words to succeed. And Irene demonstrated for them, behind someone who had been whispering. She was definitely a no nonsense sort of person, someone that Monday felt that he could respect. And next lesson, they would not need to bring anything with them. He nodded and left to make sure that he had the three D’s memorized before the next lesson.

It didn't make sense that Apparition was scarier than driving, if Aine wanted to attempt to convince herself to be brave. Sure, driving was something that could be practiced, that was in something that had safety features and had the restrictions of many, many hours of supervised practice compared to something that...couldn't. But they both had the same essential function, right? Just, you know, one was magically teleporting yourself in one piece to another place, while the other was getting a huge hunk of metal to move.

Suffice it to say, Aine was terrified.

Not least because apparently, as the Ministry representative reminded them, being able to perform apparition depended on concentration. And while she could concentrate behind the wheel of a car and get from point A to point B safely, that didn't specifically translate to actually teleporting oneself. She listened carefully to what was being said, making a note of the three Ds. She wasn't sure if just remembering the words would actually make her able to apparate, but working through the mental process would surely help. Focus on your destination, concentrate with determination and move yourself with deliberation. It wasn't exactly catchy, or specific, really, but Aine was just going to try and not poke holes in the logic. Soon enough (not today, luckily), she'd have to do it for herself, and she really wanted to get there in one piece. After all, if she cut her arm off in the act, she wouldn't be able to apparate or drive a car.
