I don't think a thread like this already exists, but I always think it's interesting to find out what a character was supposed to be like when they were created, especially in comparison to how they actually turn out. We all know characters have a mind of their own, but im curious, how has your character differed from the character you initially designed them to be?

For me, Eoghan was never supposed to have any friends. He was going to be incredibly antisocial and would push away any chance at friendships because it would interfere with his focus of learning magic, which would affect his ability to take care of his mugge sister post graduation. Of course we now know after meeting Lilith that went completely out the window, and three years later he's very happy to have a group of friends he can trust and grow with

Additionally when I made Felix Layton-King as a bebi, he was going to grow up to be a baker whom I saw in Hufflepuff. Very quiet and would mind his own business, making cakes and pastries whenever the mood caught him. I can no longer imagine Felix baking anything =))

P.S Apparently I've posted this as a question.. Ngl didn't even realise I could do that

OH I LOVE THIS Ok let me get into it!! So first of all my Gaia Athanasiou was meant to be nice. She was meant to always be quiet but very nice and sweet, not mean and prickly. She's still like not inherently bad I don't think but she's definitely not what I expected. I created her with the means of build her off of the goddess Gaia in Greek mythology which would make her very down to earth and just I had a sweet character in mind. Well I did one alt rp with her and her sisters and found out..... She isn't sweet and come sorting time filling out her form it was more and more evident she'd be a Slytherin when initially I had thought she'd end up in Hufflepuff. I do think there's a lot of room for her to grow and I am excited to see what she brings with so far I have been very surprised with her kind of deep love for her sister Mania and I am very keen on figuring more out about her.

The we have Juniper Veritas my sweet innocent gal. Creating her I wanted to make her a strong willed but kind and down to earth girl. She was always supposed to love nature and be connected to it but I wasn't planning her to be just so.... Naïve and shy. She's definitely come as a bit of a surprise with how much she cares for others opinions and how fragile she is in how they will affect her sense of security and self. I love her but she is also a bit clumsy and I am scared for flying lessons whenever I do hers... Definitely far far sweeter and kinder than I initially planned but I guess she do be balancing my Gaia out...

Amory Raven much like your Eoghan he was never supposed to care for people or friends. He was supposed to be very anti people and just focus on learning and be the best in his year group (delusional much big boy) but the more I do with him the sillier he is, he is still very ambitious but he definitely has adopted a new kind of chillness on how to go about life. He is very keen on making more friends and doesn't think they'll be a distraction, he just wants to have some fun.

This one's interesting because I sometimes forget what characters were supposed to be in the first place lol. But I'll give it a go.

Demetrius Wagner - He was supposed to be a bit antisocial and quiet but I found that boring and since he was my first character, I wanted to be more involved so he began actually something of a sweetheart (apart from his brief 'women only lead to heartbreak' phase but it was his first breakup and he's moved on from that now).

Aroha Blenheim - Just a small thing but she was meant to be a potions girlie. Didn't work out. Probably because although I don't mind potions lessons, doing them twice because I have two characters in the same year just isn't as much fun. So now she just really likes DADA.

Rosalind Montgomery - She's meant to be pushy. Think early-on Hermione Granger kind of pushy. That just won't work for some reason, despite me trying. She is kind of pushy, but not to the level I intended her to be. Rosalind is actually a weird one for me because I never feel like I've properly developed her but then she just goes and does stuff and I'm like okay cool. So maybe I should just let her be what she is without trying to shape her.

Kanako Kurosawa - She was meant to be more calculating and better at hiding her emotions but that just blew out of the water for her (don't know if that's the right idiom but hopefully you get what I mean). Kanako had a mind of her own and wanted to be more reactive which is fair - be you, Kanako.

I think that's probably it. I honestly sometimes forget how a character is initially planned and just let them do what they want. I've learnt trying to resist that flow can only make roleplaying more difficult.

This is such a fun thread to read through because it's funny how this happens to everyone =))

Freddie Lagowski - he was supposed to be, well, not mean-spirited, but more selfish than he is. I didn't anticipate him being so empathetic (although that made sense the more I developed him). I fully expected him to be sorted into Slytherin because the focus was originally on his ambition, intelligence, and tendency to look out for himself first and foremost. Those traits are still in there, but the selfishness quickly morphed into a defence mechanism. He's selfish sometimes because he's protecting himself, not because he wants to get ahead. If he'd been sorted into Slytherin, that might not have happened, so that's fun!!!

Monty Pendleton - hahaha, he was supposed to have really loose morals. I think I even wrote in his professor app that, if hired, he would probably steal from the potions supply cupboard or set up some kind of lab in the dungeons. That did not happen =)) but otherwise the core of him has honestly stayed the same. Developing him gave more context to his personality traits but they didn't change much.

I'll come back with some more some time when it's not 1am!!!!

Happens nearly every time for mine, I think they do it to me out of spite tbh. Often it's just the people around them, they kind of change in response to their peers. I'm seeing my psychologist about that. I'm getting better at having a clearer voice for characters first but it doesn't always work.

Renata Stepanova: This was always the funniest to me because I envisioned her as being kind of a sopping wet cat of a human being, a bit pathetic and not especially successful. Somehow she turned out to be nice, popular, and where I had intended her to not be very good at Quidditch she ended up being extremely good at it. In the end I just had to go with it and make her into the kind of popular girl you want to hate but you feel bad about it because they're actually nice. (Is that a universal thing, or is that just me?)

Aine Thompson: Was always supposed to have strong opinions, but she was intended to be more quiet, reserved and burdened by expectation. Of course, her being a muggleborn was part of it and it ended up that she didn't really have external expectations. I had hoped she'd be a Slytherin or Ravenclaw and she ended up in Hufflepuff, but that did end up working out for the best. It was I think as well a year that had a lot more quiet and reserved girls, which kind of made her lean towards being more outspoken to differentiate herself a little more. She also ended up being both more and less like me than I expected - more in the sense that to find her voice my line of thinking was 'what would I say in this situation' and she also inherited a lot of my issues (sorry Aine), less in the sense that she has a work ethic whereas I do not. :r

Yuelia Rossingol: Was meant to just be a little unnerving but curious and not threatening, but give her time she'll end up in Azkaban.

Oswald Brambleheart: He was meant to be more moody and sullen and he still can be but he's kind of mellow and chill. Totally not because I've horribly neglected him or anything.

Audrey Beauchamp: Was very much meant to be more arrogant and less friendly but she's very friendly...in her own way. She was going to be more of a teacher's pet type but inadvertently ended up with a strong inferiority complex and a thing about being ignored. She ended up way more enthusiastic and excitable than I intended but it's a good thing, I think. But at the same time she's quite thoughtful and more introspective than you might think on first glance. It was funny that everyone expected her to be a Slytherin - I knew her Ravenclaw traits were stronger (though the Slytherin traits are definitely there). Her creativity kind of popped up out of nowhere but I'm not complaining.

Miranda Dawes: Was meant to be my nice girl. Unfortunately, I can't write nice girls. Sorry, Miranda. (Also sorry to Dahlia who got shafted because of this fact. Renata got by because she was the first.)

Peregrine Piper: For the longest time she was actually meant to be the younger sibling who'd get sorted next IC year. She was going to be a quiet nerd overshadowed by her loud older brother and she and her brother were probably going to be yet more Ravenclaws for my collection. But she ended up being the older one and very quickly turned into responsible elder sibling. She also wasn't intended to be a romantic but she kind of is. She was always supposed to like dinosaurs and magical paleontology, but that turned into a love of dragons and manticores and chimeras.
