Yet another new home

Another home, where the parents were so desperate to make him feel comfortable, and loved. They all turned out the same in the end though. Sick and tired of him and all the trouble that he brought with him. These two didnt seem too bad however, and the thirteen year old girl staring at him from across the back seat was a little annoying, but he could cope. As they pulled into a driveway, Falcon looked out the window at the towering oaks lining the driveway. they turned a corner, and were suddenly in front of a two story house that had been hidden from the road. He waited for the man and woman sitting in the front of the car to get out first, before he stepped out of the car.

Hannah sighed as she got out of the car. Why Mark always insisted on doing things the non-magical way was beyond her. Even though he was a muggle, he knew how much easier things were when done by magic. Shivering in the cold December air, she brushed at the snowflakes that had fallen on her shoulders as she walked around to the back of the station wagon. Mark popped the boot, and she lifted Falcon's suitcase out, which was surprisingly light. Taking in Falcon had been something that Hannah had been willing to do, and it had taken little convincing to bring her husband around. The biological son of her sister, who had died several years ago, had been to many foster homes, all of which had fallen through. Falcon seemed to attract trouble, but Hannah was determined to see it through.

She glanced sharply at the house when she saw a light flick on. Straightening up, she was about to call out to her husband, when she realised who it must. Arianna was home. A wave of guilt hit her full force. They hadn't yet told their daughter that Falcon was coming t live with them. Hannah had thought that she was coming the next day, which would've given Falcon time to settle in, and to get everything straightened out. Arianna being home complicated things. She began to walk quickly towards the house, her shoes crunching on the packed snow.

Coughing, Arianna straightened up after bursting out of the fireplace. She felt her way around the dark living room until she found the light switch, and flicked it on. Sighing, she looked around. The living room, immaculate as usual, due to her mother, had been re-arranged since the last holidays. She collapsed on the couch, wondering where her family was. She nearly jumped out of her skin when she heard the front door open "Mom!" she said, running, and giving her a huge hug. She had been taller than her little mother for a year now.

As Hannah walked through the door, she was frantically trying to think of a way to tell her daughter that a stranger would be coming to live with them. She couldn't help but smile as her teenage daughter ran and gave her a hug "You're filthy!" she exclaimed, brushing some of the silt from Arianna's shoulders, and pulling back gingerly. As she looked into her daughter's smiling face, she couldn't help but feel as if she had no need to worry. Ari had accepted Clare into the family, why wouldn't it be different this time? Because you didn't tell her... a little voice in the back of her head said.
"Arianna. There's been... A change" she carefully, not knowing how to break the news to her.

Falcon walked around to the back of the car, where Hannah had pulled out his trunk. He also glanced towards the house when a light flicked on. He assumed that must be Arianna, the cousin he'd never met. Falcon looked curiously after Hannah as she started quickly towards the house. Shrugging, he began to pull his trunk after her, towards the house. The open door was welcoming, stepping into the warmth. Spotting a thermometre by the door, he peered at it. -23 degrees. A bit of a change from the temperatures in Vancouver, but he could handle it. He watched from the doorway as an attractive girl, who he assumed to be Arianna, hugged her mother, without noticing him. He stayed silent as Hannah looked at her daughter, and began an awkward sentence. Wait. Arianna hadn't been told he was coming? Well this was difficult. He didn't even know the girl, and suddenly, without her knowing, they were being launched into being brother and sister.

Arianna rolled her eyes, unable to keep the smile of her face as her mother fussed over the soot from the fire. Looking at her mother, her smile faded. She could tell something was wrong. The lines around her face were more pronounced, and she looked anxious. That was when she looked past her mother to see a boy around her age, standing in the doorway. She frowned, half-curious, half confused "Who's that? Mom, what's going on?" she asked.

Hannah could see Arianna's eyes focus on something behind her, and she glanced around to see Falcon standing in the doorway. Tight-lipped, she turned back to her daughter "Arianna, this is Falcon, the son of my sister Laina" she said quietly, not dwelling on the fact that Laina was no longer alive. No one needed reminding of that "He has been in foster care ever since, and that hasn't really...worked out" she said carefully, glancing back at him again "So we've decided to give him a home. Permanently" she finished, looking anxiously into Arianna's eyes. She placed her wand on the table, as a sign of respect.

Arianna blinked. She hardly remembered her Aunt Laina. She had only met her a couple of times when she was younger. Her mother hadn't been that close to her, as far as Ari knew. But now they were taking in her son? "Um..." she said "Welcome... to the family" she managed. Why didn't they tell me? she thought. She wasn't sure how she felt about all this, but it would've been nice to be warned that she was coming home to a new brother. Had they thought that she would react badly, and refuse? She frowned "Why didn't you tell me? I don't mind or anything... It just would have been nice if you'd sent me an owl or something" she said, her face hard.

Falcon tensed as Arianna spotted him, and began asking questions. This was it, but how would this girl react? Having somebody move in was a huge change, especially out of the blue like this. His gaze upon mother and daughter wavered slightly as Hannah mentioned the death of his mother. He refused to think about it, and wrenched his attention back to the conversation. He supressed a smile as his many foster homes 'Hadn't really... Worked out' That was for sure.

Falcon nodded politely as Arianna spoke to him rather awkwardly. Presuming that there was no danger of confrontation, he made his way further into the house, glancing behind him to see that Mark and Clare were coming up the path. He dropped his backpack on the table, not really looking were he placed it, as he gazed around at the kitchen/dining room. There was a moment of silence, before a might shattering sound, as glass exploded on the floor. His bag had knocked a vase and a pile of books off the table. "Oops" he muttered, bending to pick up the books. A sickening crack sounded from under his shoe, and he lifted his foot, looking down at Hannah's wand, now completely snapped in two. "Um... Sorry" he mumbled, picking the two pieces up. A red flush crept up his neck. He wasn't normally bothered about first impressions, but somehow this new family seemed special, maybe because they were actually related.

Riley was tense as she apparated to her friends house in Canada. It was freezing out so she had wrapped up warm in a scarf and coat. In one hand she held a small bag, the other moved slowly towards the door. Not quite sure whether to knock or not, Riley listened to what was going on on the other side of the door. She could hear voices, there was somebody home. Riley willed her hand towards the door and knocked lightly. As she brushed away a tear from her eyes she heard a large crash errupt from the house, she stepped back slightly and pulled her scarf around her kneck tighter, wishing she hadn't had to come here.

Hannah sighed inwardly, relieved that Arianna hadn't gotten angry. Se hated fighting with her daughter. They could both be rather hot-headed at times, and when they disagreed, it usually got heated. "Well" she said briskly "We've made you a bed in the spare room, which is now yours" she told Falcon "And I think we're all tir-" she broke off as an almighty crash sounded, as Falcon's bag knocked the vase of the table. She reached for her wand, which was no longer on the table. A crack alerted her to where it was.

She took the two pieces of her wand back rather numbly, staring at it, with the little strand of unicorn hair poking out one snapped half. She pocket the pieces, rubbing her temples with her right hand "No, it's fine" she said, her voice coming out hard. This wasn't the best start. Mark and Clare had come in, closing the door behind them. A knock on the door made her look around, half surprised, half weary. Who on earth would be turning up at this time of night? Moving across the room to the door, she tried hard not to think of the snapped wand in her pocket. The wand that she had purchased when she was eleven years old. Opening the door she blinked in surprise "I'm sorry, who are you looking for?" she asked the blonde girl who she did not recognise.

Riley heard more noises within the house while she waited patiently for the door to be answered. She turned her head and looked back on the road, for a second she wondered if she had done the right thing. She could still go back now, perhaps her mother hadn't even realised she was gone yet? But before she had the chance to reconsider the door was opened and a tall kind looking lady looked down at her and spoke. Riley opened her mouth and stuttered slightly "I-ah-I-I ran away from home" she admitted, her head hung low, she could feel the tears pricking at her eyes. "Is Arianna home?" she asked shyly, hitching her guitar up higher on her back. She assumed the person standing before her was Ari's mother. She looked so kind and normal. It made Riley think of her own mother, she loved her but she wished she could be a normal mother. One who baked cookies and sewed quilts, but what Riley had was a mother who painted toenails and wore designer clothing. Her mother cared and loved her but Riley often felt that Nanny was more of a mother to her, and Francis was like and older sister. Especially since the arrival of her baby brother Laiken.

Riley looked past Arianna's mother and into the house, she saw Ari and her family, they looked so happy and normal. That was the kind of christmas she wanted to be a part of. The small blonde flashed a smile and wondered to herself what Mrs Tipley would say.

Arianna was a little annoyed that her mother had avoided her questions, and made to turn away and get her suitcase, which was covered in soot and dust. A crash, followed by a crack made her jump, looking around. The vase that had previously sat on the table was now in tiny pieces all over the floor, but she wasn't sure where the crack had come from. Then she spotted the two pieces of wood in Falcon's hand. Her mother's wand. However apprehensive she was about the new addition to the family, she felt bad for him. First five minutes in the new house, and he'd already messed up. She sighed, turning back to her suitcase. The pieces of the vase would just have to stay there, seeing as her mother's wand was snapped in two, and she wasn't old enough to perform magic outside of school.

A knock on the door made her turn around, a little exasperated. Who on Earth could it be now? She moved sideways slightly, to see who was at the door, not within hearing range. "Riley?" she said, recognising her new Hufflepuff friend. Why was she here? Arianna stepped carefully over the broken glass, and over to the door "Hey... What's wrong?" she asked "Come in..." she said, gesturing into the house, before turning back slightly to her mother "Can she?" she asked hesitantly. Her mother was already stressed, another addition to the household was just what she needed.

Riley looked up at Arianna with teary eyes and followed her into the house. "Thanks, I hope I'm not intruding" she said trying to force a smile onto her face. Riley slipped her heels off at the door like she had been taught as a small child and felt the soft carpet against her sore feet. She never wanted to wear heels, but her mother had dressed her and she hadn't had time to change. Riley fiddled with her scarf as she entered the lounge, she felt out of place, like she was intruding. But she had no place to go, and she couldn't go home now.

Riley placed her small bag down on the floor before lifting her guitar over her head and placing it down next to the bag. Riley looked up and noticed a boy around her age looking at her. She let a small smile cover her face and her fingers waved slightly at the boy "Hi" seemed to be all she could muster up. She blushed slightly as she looked at the boy. She looked over to Ari as if to ask who he was.

Falcon watched Hannah take the pieces of her wand "Sorry..." he mumbled again, looking down and scuffing the toe of his shoe on the ground. A knock on the door made him look around like everyone else in the room. He had no idea who it could be, nothing to do with him, he hoped. He stepped backwards to see who it was when Hannah opened the door. A pretty blonde girl stood in the doorway looking upset. It was apparent that she knew Arianna, and he watched as his cousin, no sister, went over and brought her inside. He frowned slightly when she took off the ridiculous high heels she had been wearing. Why on earth would anybody wear high heels in the snow? Why would they even wear them at all? He nodded in return to her greeting, still keeping the same neutral expression. He cleared his throat, shoving his hands in his pockets "I'll go find my room..." he said quietly, making to take his suitcase and bag.

Riley let herself smile. She could tell the boy must be wondering why she would be wearing heels on such a day, especially ones as ridiculous as those. Riley looked down at her outfit and felt like such an idiot in her designer waistcoat, jacket and skirt. She felt like ripping them off, but she didn't have a change of clothes so that wasn't an option. The girl that was standing in the Tipley's lounge wasn't Riley. It was her mother. Her mother had chosen all of her clothes and those stupid heels. As she stood there, her hair hanging limply, damp snow dripping from its tangled ends, she felt as though she wanted to give up. But she persisted with her smile, making it stay on her face. Keeping up appearances. "Who's that?" Riley asked Arianne, blushing slightly. She may have been upset but that wasn't going to stop her girlish ways.

Arianna glanced down at what her friend was wearing too. She hadn't really ever seen Riley out of uniform before. Trying not to seem critical, she said carefully "Do you want to change your clothes? I mean, because those ones are a little wet..." she said, trailing off. She blinked when Falcon began to make a move towards going upstairs. She hadn't realised how tired she was. It was strange to think that she had been at Hogwarts New Zealand just this morning. In that space of time, she had packed, travelled up to the Northern hemisphere in a bunch of chimneys, found out she had a new 'brother', and a friend had come un-expectantly. She sighed, before looking between Riley and Falcon "That's Flacon, my... um . Well, he lives with us" she said quietly, not knowing they were supposed to be related now.

"Let's go upstairs" she said, gesturing after Falcon who had disappeared. She glanced back into the room. Clare had already disapeared, presumably up to the room they shared, and her mother was looked as drained as Ari felt, while her father just looked utterly confused. She led the way up the stairs, squinting in the dark.

"Yeah, thanks Ari" Riley said, looking down at how ridiculous she looked. She followed the brunette up the stairs and squinted her eyes, waiting for them to become used to the darkness that surrounded them. Riley was so grateful that Arianna had taken her in. She wouldn't have survived a night with her mother, trying to take her mind off of her father;s absence. She hoped she wasn't intruding on whatever was going on with the Tipley's. As Arianna said his name Riley felt herself blush again. Falcon. Such an interesting nad mysterious name. She had only just encountered the boy, yet she already wanted to get to know him. She had made a terrible first impression though, she looked terrible. Riley had no idea what she was thinking wearing heels in the snow. But she wasn't in the right frame of mind to care. Her toes were numb as she walked up the stairs. "Where should I change?" she asked reluctantly. It was getting late. Her mother would be wondering where she was by now.

Falcon dragged his trunk up the stairs, just catching Arianna's words That's Flacon, my... um . Well, he lives with us. He felt detatched from the rest of the 'family'. This girl Riley was also a new comer to the house, but at least she had a friend. He felt more alone than he had since his mother had died. As he emerged on the landing, he looked around, not knowing where to go he pulled his trunk towards the closest door, on the left. He stood awkwardly outside, not wanting to go in, in case it was private room or something. Another wave of emotion crashed over him, and he fiddled with the tag on his suitcase. He could he hear Arianna and Riley coming up the stairs, and he turned, hands in his pockets "Which is my room?" he asked, managing not to look as lost as he felt. His gaze flicked to Riley, but he looked back to Arianna quickly, shifting uncomfortably.

Ari was glad to emerge onto the landing, finding that it was light up there. The first thing she saw was Falcon standing there with his suitcase. She pointed to the third and last door on the left, managing to smile a little at him. She still hadn't got her head around the fact that he was now living with them. She supposed that having Riley turn up had distracted her, which was probably a good thing. She watched him go over to the spare room, which now his, before turning to Riley "Okay, we'll stick you in mine and Clare's room" she said, walking over to the second door on the right and opening it. Her little sister lay peacefully asleep on her bed. Ari had been going to ask her to go somewhere else, so that Riley could have her bed, but she really didn't want to wake her up. Clare was never happy about being woken up un-necessarily. She crept over to her chest of drawers and pulled out some pyjamas and a spare change of clothes, she walked silently back over to Riley, and directed her out of the room, cloing the door silently behind her.

"I really don't want to wake Clare up... So you might have to go over there" she said, pointing over at the door Falcon had disappeared into. That room had two single beds. "Sorry" she added apologetically. She went over to Falcon's door, and knocked. She didn't want to walk in on him changing or anything.

Riley nervously bit her lip as they emerged on the landing, she noticed Falcon standing by his suitcase, only for a moment before he disappeared into the last room in the hallway. She waited quietly as Arianna fetched her some dry clothes, Riley had began to shiver, and her clothes were horribly damp and snow covered. "Thats fine" The small
Blonde replied when she was given her sleeping arrangements. She supposed it was better than nothing, better than another night in her huge empty house. Riley waited quietly on the other side f the door as Ari knocked, she hoped they wouldn't disturb him, looled like he was finding it hard enough to settle in anyway.

Falcon nodded his thanks to Arianna, and turned, pulling his suitcase over to the door she had pointed out. He entereed a nice simple room with two single beds. It was quite narrow, but still reasonably roomy. Feeling suddenly drained, he went over to the bed on the left, collapsing onto it, and closing his eyes. He could hear the two girls walking around outside outside, but took no notice until there was a knock on his door. Supressing a groan, he got up slowly, and went over to the open door. He was a little surprised to see Arianna and Riley standing there. He had thought it was Hannah coming to see if he needed anything. He blinked at the two girls.

Arianna smiled tentatively as Falcon opened the door. This was a little awkward "Um... Is it okay if Riley sleeps in your room for the moment?" she asked, nodding towards the spare bed. She felt kind of bad just putting the two together in a room. They were both having a tough time at the moment it seemed, and sleeping in the same room as a stranger wouldn't help. "Because Clare's already asleep... And if I wake her up we'll all suffer" she explained, smiling slightly.

((Slight god-modding here, if you want I can edit it. I just thought I'd have Riley go to sleep then wake up like we dicussed in the PM?))

Riley looked down at the ground as Arianna explained that she would be staying in the same room as Falcon. The young boy didn't seem too happy about it all, which only made it more awkward between them. Riley held the clothes she had been lent tightly to her chest and stayed standing in the doorway to the room. She was waiting for a sign from Falcon that she could come in. The room was rather small compared with her own, back in LA she had her own bathroom and living area too. But the small twin single room looked comfortable and homey, like a normal family's would. Riley smiled as Falcon nodded and she entered the room without saying a word. The blonde sat down on the edge of one of the single beds and looked over at Falcon and then down at the pile of clothing in her arms. Arianna had left to her own bedroom now and the awkwardness in the room was so intense, along with the silence it almost drove Riley insane. "Do you mind?" Riley said, in a slightly snappy tone, motioning towards her clothing, she wasn't going to change right there in front of him. She shouldn't have snapped at the boy, but it had been a long and eventful day and she was tired and grumpy.

Riley changed quickly into the pyjamas that Arianna had lent her whilst Falcon waited patiently outside the door. He probably thought it rather rude to be kicked out of his own room while a stranger changed in it, but there wasn't really another option. "You can come in now" Riley said quietly, not wanting to wake the others. She collapsed onto the bed and stared up at the roof as Falcon came back into the small room. The pajamas were slightly loose on her thin form, but they seemed to fit alright. Riley didn't say goodnight to the stranger she was going to be sharing a room with, she didn't think it necessary. Before long, she was fast asleep, dreaming of home and what her family would be thinking by now.

That morning Riley awoke with a start, her arms and legs had been hangingover the side of the small bed and she was now in a heap on the ground. She let out a slight 'Humph' as she she sat up on the hard ground, rubbing her sleepy eyes. Getting up from the ground she sneered at Falcon who seemed to be straing at her, a small smile spread across his face. "Its not funny" Riley snapped, standing up and brushing herself off. She wondered if Arianna was awake yet, she really didn't want to stay here with this stranger. But she couldn't hear any movement about the house, it appeared that she and Falcon were the only ones awake.

Falcon shrugged "Whatever" he said stepping aside to let Riley by. She looked about as happy about the arrangement as she felt. He closed the door, before turning and beginning to walk over to his bed. He looked over sideways at her when she spoke, a little taken a back by her sharpness. He turned and left the room without a word, waiting outside for what seemed like five minutes. Why were girls so fussy? He could have just turned to the wall or something, he wasn't a pervert. He sighed when she let him back in. This was meant to be his new room, and here he was, being sent out of it by some stranger.

Falcon kicked off his shoes, turned off the light, and collapsed onto his bed, fully clothed. He was sure that Riley wold make some sort of fuss about him getting changed, and make him get changed somewhere else. He rolled over so that his back was to her, and lay there in the darkness. It took him some time to get to sleep, even though his head was aching, and his eyes were heavy. He finally drifted off, well after he heard Hannah and Mark come upstairs and go to bed.

Falcon blinked blearily, feeling momentarily disoriented. Where on earth was he? And why was there a girl, on the floor beside his bed? It took a few seconds before all it came rushing back. A new home. Strange girl. But why was she on the floor? As he watched she awoke and sat up. He couldn't help but smirk slightly. He hadn't fallen out of bed since... He couldn't even remember. "Never said it was" he replied shortly, his small grin disappearing. This girl was just so grumpy. Just to be polite, he asked "Did you have a good sleep?" It was too late before he realised that it sounded like he was teasing her about falling out of bed, which hadn't been his intention.
