Leading the first batch of duelists onto the stage, Katherine gestured for them to take their positions on opposite ends, and briefly explained the rules and formalities as a refresher, though by now everyone both competing and spectating was bound to know them. With all said and done, the Headmistress took her place on a raised podium overlooking the stage and the crowd gathered around it, before taking her wand to her throat. "Bow and commence." Her voice boomed clearly, informing the competitors that they were welcome to begin.

The duel begins now. You have 24 hours to post, or face disqualification. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!
As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

Sydney had been waiting for a chance to duel since she had started school, and she was taking it as a good omen that she had been paired up with the chance to smear that idiot Eric Holland in her dueling debut. With the barest inclination of her head as a bow, Sydney drew her wand and not allowing Holland a chance to get comfortable before she cast her spell. "Serpensortia!" She said, hoping the snake would not only start things off with some drama, but also distract Holland enough that she could get a few more spells off.

Eric wasn't sure if duelling was as cool as some people thought it was, but it definitely beat like every other activity Hogwarts had to offer, so he had figured it might as well be worth a shot. Eric hadn't really thought much about who he would have to duel. He didn't know most of his classmates, and had imagined facing off against some annoying kid he vaguely recognized from potions class or something. But as he stepped onto the stage, instead he saw his biggest enemy Sydney. He grinned. Oh, this was going to be fun. He wasn't surprised when Sydney got a spell off first, though he had sort of expected her to say something snarky first. He frowned at the snake. "Dumb." He muttered, then cast a stunning spell at it. He scowled at Sydney. "Can't fight your own battles?"

It wasn't a surprise that Holland had some stupid banter to shoot back at her instead of any useful spells, though Sydney was put out her snake hadn't invoked even a small reaction. "Some of us have more elegant solutions than using our fists all the time," Sydney said, trying not to let Holland get under her skin. She wanted to be merciless and methodical about this. Flicking her wand, Sydney shot a trip jinx at Holland next, reveling in the chance to finally hex that stupid look off Eric's dumb face.

Eric scowled at Sydney's words. "I'm not using my fists now!" He shouted. "You're stupid." But he was so busy trying to think of what spell he should use on her next to make her eat her words, he forgot to block hers. He tried to dodge it, but got hit by the trip jinx instead and fell forward on the stage, hard. He let out a curse as he tried to get back to his feet quickly, flushing in embarrassment. He quickly sent a stunning spell her way, though even as he cast it he knew it probably was going to miss.

Sydney sidestepped Eric's spell with a smirk, taking a moment to enjoy him flat on the ground. "This suits you, like the little worm you are," She said haughtily, aiming her wand him and firing off a leg-locker jinx. "I don't know why I expected a challenge from you, I should have known better." Sydney added, enjoying lording over him.

Eric was humiliated. How had Sydney managed to make him fall on his face in front of everyone? This wasn't how it was supposed to go. Her words only added fuel to the fire, and he grit his teeth as he dodged her spell. He was scrambling to think of another spell himself, but all he could focus on was the smug look on Sydney's face. Before he knew what he was doing, his wand was left abandoned on the stage as he lunged at Sydney, hoping to erase that smug smile off her face. He moved to shove her, hard.

The banter between the two young students was not what Katherine would have referred to as 'sticking within the confines of the schools strict No Bullying policy', but the woman barely had a moment to speak and warn them of the line they were crossing before Eric Holland - of course it had to be Eric Holland - decided to try and throw a punch. "ENOUGH." Katherine's magically amplified voice echoed through the chamber. With a harsh flick of her wand, the Headmistress erected a barrier between the two students, separating them behind a transparent wall. "The both of you are disqualified from this duel. Exit the chamber immediately and separately. I will speak to the both of you after the tournament has ended. Go."

Sydney's grin turned into a snarl when Eric surged forward to shove her, already pulling her wand up to retaliate when they were forced back and the Headmistress' voice was ringing out over the chamber. Sydney flicked her wand in disgust, sneering at Holland from behind the barrier, of course he couldn't control himself long enough for them to settle this in a civilized manner, but her attention quickly switched to the headmistress when she announced Sydney had been disqualified as well. "What?!" She said furiously, stalking from the stage. "He shoved me and I get disqualified? This is ridiculous," She announced loudly to the hall, hoping any spectators would notice the injustice and shooting the headmistress an outraged look as she left the chamber. This was so typical, she was always getting in trouble for stuff she didn't do.
