Ai was her flyers jacket with a deep sea diver patterned hood. She was trying despratly not to be seen. Someone had thought it funny to post all over the commonroom that Valentine's day was her birthday. When she found out who did it she was going to kill them with her bare hands never mind her wand for now. She hated this day. She suppoed that she shouldn't have been so worried because she was sure that most of the students where too busy being 'in love' to really pay attention to what was on the walls.

Be that as it may she was keeping a shap eye out to anyone who looked like they even close to wishing her a Happy Birthday. There was nothing happy about this day. This day she turned thirteen without her brother. He should have been here celebrating the end of another year of life with her. She pushed that aside though. It wasn't the time to be sentemental when she had to eat and run. When she was finished with the small meal that she had planed out for herself she would dodge the crowds in the Great Hall then make her way back up to the tower where she would hide until this day was over. She put down he fork singnaling her finish now all she had to do was make it to the door without seeing anyone and she would be golden.

Sam was slow to get out of bed, when he was all dressed. He wandered out to the common room rubbing his eyes, still feeling a little sleepy. It was when he removed his hands from his eyes he noticed the ẁriting over the wall. He read it with a puzzled face. It was all saying how Ai's birthday was today, Valentine's Day. So her birthday was on valentine's day, he hadn't known that, then again she probably wouldn't want him to know. He looked round the common room, to see if anyone, Ai in particular was there. To bad he didn't have something for her, he stopped in his thoughts, he shouldn't be thinking that. He thought of their last meeting, he definitely shouldn't be thinking that. He glanced at the writing once more before heading out the Great Hall.

He arrived at the Ravenclaw house table, and noticed a familar figure leaving. He walked over to Ai, and and reaching her said in a tone only she would hear

"Happy Birthday"

Ai froze to the spot. This was what she was dreading. People would mock her. She could not be the coldest of the cold and still have a birthday on the day of love. Slowly she closed her eyes and counted to ten while her hand curled into a tight fist. Her anger was not quelled though. Before Ai could hold herself back she poped Sam in the jaw right in the middle of the Great Hall. "There is nothing Happy about this birthday there never will be again." She said her voice steady but her breath a little heavy.

Sam felt Ai's fist meet his jaw. It was pushed to an uncomfortable angle. He put his hands up to it "Ow, you-" he broke off, firstly if a prefect caught him swearing, he would probably be in trouble, secondly his mouth already hurt, he didn't need to move it anymore. He looked at her and narrowed his eyes. He had given her so many chances, and she had rejected them all. His bright blue eyes pierced her ice cold ones as he looked at her. He didn't know what to think he had, had a small crush on her, but he was beginning to bury these feelings deep. He had never met a girl so confusing, and moody.

Herubbed his jaw, he had heard what Ai said, and was considering it. So, something happened to Ai on the day of her birthday then. Maybe she too had experienced death. He snapped out of his thoughts,

"Un-happy birthday then" he said to her through his teeth, "Sorry I even came over"

Ai narrowed her eyes back at him and gave him a harsh push. "You what Sam? Come on have a backbone and say it." She said. She was daring him to say thing upseting to her. He had already done it once why not again. She also for some reason didn't want him to leave. She knew she had just hit him but a part of her wanted to take it back.

She squished that side of her right off. Hearts where too easyly broken and she didn't have the time or pationce for something like what others in the school went through. "Don't. It's just another day got it. And it really is your falt for crossing my path today so do yourself a favor and finish it." She said pushing him again. There was a chance, only a slight one, that Ai could force whatever made her think about Sam more than she had to go away if she treated him this way.

Sam felt himself being pushed, and stood strong against it, he had stopped himself from saying it and now didn't want to say it "No" he said to her, he didn't want her to try and imatate and boss him around.

Sam shrugged "Why do you make it sound like crossing your path is a bad idea?" he asked her "Isn't it more exciting for you? To give me some more bruises, take out your anger?" he laughed sarcastically wincing slighty as he opened his mouth a little to much feeling the bruise, "Cya round" he said, as he turned and began to walk away. He was kinda getting used to this responce from Ai, she must really hate him. He didn't know what to think. One part told him to hate her back, another said to give her another chance.

Ai tilted her head. Did she liked it better this way? Her computer like brain was working on trying to get the answers to what Sam had asked her when she noticed that he was walking away. She could tell that people where looking at her funny but she didn't care. She sprang like a cat, aiming to knock him down.

He had just told her no. That was not really a word she was used to hearing from other than her wicked grandmother. The bruse, she had noticed before he had turned way from her. It gave her an annoying thumping in her chest that refused to leave her. Was she becoming alive? Heaven forbid that, her grandmother for that would aim to kill her again.

Sam suddenly remembered why he was down in the great hall in the first place, the smell of food wafted to his nose, and he wanted to sit down and eat. He turned slightly to see what was on offer food wise, out of the corner of his eye he saw something lunge for him "what the-" he began, as he felt her small body land on his. He stumbled, and tried to regain balence he did not fall, he was bigger than Ai. He grabbed her wrists and removed her off him. He turned letting go of her wrists. He met her eyes and asked "And that was because...?"

He was beginning to get used to Ai trying to hurt him. He wondered if he could put up with it for much longer. She led him in, then when he got to close, threw him away. He almost wanted to, strangly as it was. She made things interesting, she was a mystery who he wanted to solve, maybe even fix.

Ai pursed her lips. She was sure at the speed she had taken him she could have knocked him down. Then again he was bigger than she was. Scratch that most of the school was bigger than she was. Ai was a tiny girl but with a wiry sort of strength that came out at random times. This was not one of those times as looked like because Sam was still standing. "For turning your back on me. You don't do that." She said as she crossed her arms.

Ai face was stone as she looked at him but there seemed to be something more liquid about her eyes. As if they where not completely frozen anymore the layer of thin ice that people where warned against. This may have been due to the fact that her heart was hammering though Ai still didn't know what all this meant. She was still challenging him though. Whatever she was feeling she wasn't caving into it without hurting him for making her do so.

Sam shook his head slightly and felt a smile on his lips when she answered. He almost felt like walking away but this time facing towards her, but knew Ai well enough know to know she would probably throw another punch for him trying to be funny, or, well teasing. Knowing that she was looking at him with attention, even though her arms were crossed, he felt a little curious to ask her something.

"Why-" he began, then thought better. He looked like he was going to talk again, but then he closed his mouth. He reached over to the table and grabbed a croissant, to distract from the topic as well as solve his hunger.

"Wanna get out of here?" he asked, then took a bite down the croissant, discovering that it was filled with a sweet jam. He didn't really wanna stick round the great hall anymore, it was beginning to get busy with rather hungry students. He was thinking about going for a walk by the lake or the corridors, he may as well ask Ai, it would be a time where they were both a peace with each other. Well, unless something happened, but strayed from that idea.

Ai rolled her eyes then nodded. She would have hurt him if he had tried to be funny around her. There was something about his humor that made her want to laugh too. It annoyed her. "I'll wait until your done with your sickingly sweet breakfast." She said shuddering a little bit. Ai didn't like sweets which was just as well because she couldn't have them. They did odd things to her system.

She noticed that people where starting to look at her oddly because of what was on the walls of the North Tower. She would take out her vendetta against her prankster later. For now she would be in the company of Sam. She didn't know why but the idea wasn't making her as sick as it should have. "Kai should be here to bare this pain with me." She whispered as she looked at the door.

Sam quickly finished his croissant, swallowing it down in a couple of gulps. He noticed people glancing at Ai, and and felt pretty protective over her. He wanted to put his arm around her, and get her out quickly, he didn't though. He walked with her silently to the exit. Well, it was silence till she spoke quietly, and when he heard it, he wondered if he was supposed to.

"Kai should be here to bare this pain with me."

He looked at her, his eyes searching hers. He was smart enough to guess why Kai wasn't there. But whether he should talk to her about it or not was a question. He knew the feeling of having lost someone whom you loved, and wanted to share moments with. It was like a part of your heart, no matter how small or big had been teared out. He almost gave her hand a small squeeze, but he stopped and shoved his hand in his pocket. They neared the door.

"How longs he been gone?" he asked her quietly.

Ai half wanted to tell Sam that it was none of his damn buisness how long Kai had been out of her life but the other half said "Two years. He was suppoed to be coming to Hogwarts with me. Instead he had a fit that stopped his heart. He left me alone." Ai said then grabed a hold of her other arm. She could still feel her brother's hand holding on to her as his life slipped away from him.

Ai looked away from Sam. There would be little for him to see because Ai had been taught that emotions where a sign of weakness but at the moment she felt like her eyes would betray her. She didn't know why she was telling this to Sam. She hated Sam. Well Ai hoped that what she was feeling for him was hate. That was really all she knew.

The Gryffindor skipped through the Great Hall with a ridiculous-looking sort of merry skit, bouncing from table to table as he exchanged greetings and niceties with all who knew him - quite a lot, if you thought about what he did mostly. From a few of his Ravenclaw friends, Vladimir had managed to grasp that Ai Adlam's birthday was coming up, and so took it upon himself to deliver Birthday wishes and greetings and all your nonsensical things that you tended to deliver on a person's birthday - Even if it was Ai you were talking about here.

Skidding to a halt before Ai and Sam, he bowed his head slightly in greeting, beaming at Ai, and then giving Sam a warm smile to acknowledge his presence. "H'ppy birthday, Ai." The boy greeted in his slight Bulgarian accent, "Votcha looking so down for?" As usual, Vladimir Dragonski's usual knack for sensing emotions was evident ... His mood, however, continually remained exceedingly cheerful at all times.

Ai froze with her shoulders up like a cat after it had just been rubbed the wrong way. Another one came to mock her. So her birthday was on the day that meant useless cards and silly decorations that was meant to mean love when all it really meant was lust and wasted money. Worst off the 'Happy Birthday' came from that annoying voice. The voice in her window and the voice that she went to hear only once from the Quidditch stands.

She turned and looked at Vlad her face a cold mask but a pink tint on her cheeks. She didn't know that this would affect her like this. She saw the lips that had been so quick to steal her first and so far only kiss. Ai was disgusted with herself. "Don't ever say that to me again you stupid mudblood Gryffendor." She said coolly then grabbed Sam's arm hard enough to cause pain. "We are leaving." She said pulling him with her. Why had she not hit him like she hit Sam she would never know but she could not allow herself to be in his presence for more than a few minutes.

Vladimir blinked awkwardly as he was left standing there while Ai proceeded to leave with her friend. Mudblood? A few other Ravenclaws around him were looking stunned as well, as he opened his mouth once, gaped for a bit, being struck speechless, and then came to at last. "Er - I'm assuming I can't come..." He begun wryly, raising his piercing golden eyes to Ai's and looking right into her gaze. "So I'll just give you ya' present now, aye?"

Holding out a package that looked recently and hurriedly wrapped, as if in a rush, Vladimir grinned and inched it towards Ai, as if expecting to be bitten as soon as he went near her.

Ai hated her birthday. Always had, before it had been because of all the silliness that went along with this horrific day. Even her brother had agreed that the cards and glitter just ruined the spirit of the day. Now she hated it because it reminded her of her lost twin. She heard people gasp and glared. Instantly anyone who knew Ai and her reputation turned away.

She looked back at those golden orbs. She could only do so for a moment before knocking the item out of his hands then catching it. Ai refused to touch Vlad and if anyone asked it was because she didn't want to wash her hands again. "This will go straight in the boiler if I don't like it." She said as she fixed her flyer's jacket and started to open the gift. It took Ai a moment to get over how awfully wrapped it was before she looked at what was inside.

Two years, it was about the same time his Mum had been gone. He wished he could make her feel less sad, help ease the pain of losing someone. But he knew nothing could help. He was finding out more things about her, which surprised him, but, he liked it.

Sam saw Vladimir, and smiled back at him. He thought it was nice how he too came to wish Ai a happy birthday, but from Ai's reaction figured she treated him like she, had treated him too. He winced inside when she grabbed his arm, he glanced akwardly at Vladimir and felt a little rude. But, when he brought out a present for her and Sam instantluy felt stupid. He hadn't known and didn't have a present. He felt bad, and there was another feeling that he was experiencing. It was something he hadn't had in a while. Jealously. He knew he shouldn't, nothing was going on between him and Ai. But then again, he was beginning to have a bit of a crush on her. Now, he wished he had known about her birthday, even though she would have killed him. He bright blue eyes watched her as she opened the present.

Vladimir cast a wary look at Ai as she knocked the present out of his hands, but a smile twitched at his lips when she begun to open it. Well, there was some progress. He shrugged at Sam with a little smile before turning his attention back to eye. "Well I dunno if you'll like it, but the boiler seems s'bit harsh, innit?" Vladimir said, grinning at her merrily, his bright golden-brown eyes alight. Lying in the hastily-wrapped package was a painstakingly hand-carved talisman with the symbol of an artic wolf whittled into the middle. The talisman was complete with a little bead necklace that appeared to have been hand-carved as well, and strung in the middle of the night.

"Finished it yesterday." Vladimir beamed, "Did it myself. Took some time." If one looked closer, the boy clearly had rather noticeable bags under his eyes.

Before Ai even looked at the gift she glared at Vlad. "You have not even begun to see harsh from me." She said looking right into those golden eyes with her own like steel. She knew she should have just dropped the gift right then and there to tare a hole in Vlad but then she saw that there where the signs of hard work under his eyes. He had worked on this for her? There was no reason for Vlad to even consider her. She had been so sure that she had been a game to him. Why would she be anything else to someone so bright?

She looked down at the gift for her. It was a wolf. She had always liked the creatures because they stuck together for need. One thing went wrong and they turned on each other. It was just like what the her world was like. Her grandmother had been so sure that she was going to be the one to die that she treated Ai like she was already dead. She was nicer now but only just. She didn't know what to make of it. She looked at Vlad then at Sam then left the Great Hall without either of them. If they really wanted to talk to her they could go and find her.

Sam looked at the carved tailsmen. He looked at Vladimir, who was beaming brightly. He wished he had gotten her something. The jealously tugged at him as he glanced at Vlad, but he didn't show it through his face. Sometimes, his face was extremely readable, other times, you could not understand what he was thinking. Man, he was falling for Ai much more than he thought. He wondered if he should follow her when she left. Then again, knowing her she might beat her up. He sighed in his mind, then turned back to Vladimir.

"Nice present" he said calmly, then he smiled "I think she liked it" he told him.

"Thanks, but, well ... You never know with Miss Ai." Vladimir chuckled, watching Ai's retreating figure. Turning on his heel, he gave Sam a little wave and started to dash after her retreating figure while giving quick greetings to people about to enter the Great Hall for breakfast.
