It was Sky's last Yule ball. At the start of the year, it had been funny to say it was their first day of school. But as the year was rushing on, it was starting to hit home how little time she had left here and that this time next year, she would be well and truly in the world of adults, not the world of in-beteens, a world of not quite adults but no longer children. She had gone all out with her outfit, putting together a dress from a few other dresses she had found in charity shops over the break before charming it all an iridescent turquoise gold. She wanted something whimsical. something she felt, not like a princess, but like an elf or a nature spirit. Okay maybe it was a bit princessy too. But it felt right, airy and magical. She waited in the entrance hall for Ngawaiata, looking forward to spending the night dancing with her girlfriend. their first anniversary and their second ball together.
