Hey y'all it's DOMINO!

That's odd because I'm English....

Anyway! I think quite a few Unsorted students agree that waiting o be sorted into Durmstrang or Beauxbatons or Members is a pain.

Maybe there should be a button or something to sort you into BB, Membies or Durms because we can't really post anywhere (although me and Rui have with caution).
If not maybe There be no Unsorted group and straight into members? Or just registered?

As to your specific suggestions

1) People are defaulted to the "Unsorted" group because that's where most people start when they first join, with a student, and it's not just "Unsorted student" it's also "Unsorted - this character hasn't been determined yet/I've applied for something and am waiting."
There is plenty to do with an "unsorted" account.
2) It is not possible to make users be able to change their own groups. Forum software allows administrators to move users between groups and (in the case of ZetaBoards) Global Moderators (if Member Autotools are set up) and "Member Managers" (who have limited Admin CP access and can edit/move/ban nearly any member in/to/for nearly any group). Even if it were possible, that'd be a disaster on so many scales. Often people ask to move to a group but don't actually belong there. Or they want to do something that isn't allowed. (For example trying to be a professor for Durmstrang or Beauxbatons.)
